Winning the War

Only the AEs and the MTO were scratched, and the turf was firm. War Clan (War Front - Ashley's Clan by Seattle Slew) was favored, and Refugio (Bernardini - Storm Minstrel by Storm Cat) was 17-1. Debuting Call to Serve (War Chant - Call an Audible by Cozzene) caught my eye. Mirimichi Babe (Milwaukee Brew - Newsontherun by Cherokee Run) made a good impression, as did Giant Sensation (Giant's Causeway - Sensation by Dixie Union). Overall, this was a nice looking bunch. Artisanal (More Than Ready - Lo Cal Bread by Native Prospector) seemed a tad on edge, and was a little reluctant to load. The start was good. Giant Sensation set the pace, with Sense of Pride (Lemon Drop Kid - Alison's Winner by Pine Bluff) and War Clan chasing. Refugio was not far off. First-timer Levia Vita (Ghostzapper - Sea Jewel by Sea Hero) was pulled up soon after the start, having bore out. Giant Sensation and Sense of Pride continued 1-2, as Refugio began to move. War Clan was stuck on the inside with no where to go. She finally got through between horses to get the victory by 1 1/4 lengths. Late on the scene was Artisanal, who picked up second. Giant Sensation and Sense of Pride held third and fourth. After looming large, Refugio settled for fifth. However, it was not a bad turf debut for her. Watch the Replay.

Top Business (colt; Bluegrass Cat - Dynamic Lady by Dynaformer) got in off the AE list for race 5 at Gulfstream, a Maiden Claiming race (Claiming Price $35,000) at a mile on the turf, and ran a good race. He was involved from the start, led most of the way, and just weakened a bit late to finish second. Interestingly, the winner, Strategic Defense (With Distinction - Bridal Glow by Runaway Groom), also drew in off the AE list, which produced a 14-13 exacta. Watch the Replay.

just my 2 cents on swagger Jack in the 8th. The horse should have been taken down. he came in hard twice on the 9 horse at the top of the lane. Stewards got there head up there butt as far as i'm concerned.

delmarduke - The strangest thing about the inquiry in Swagger Jack's race was that they said that there was insufficient evidence. I've never heard that before. Sounded like an NFL replay review.

Didn't get to see or bet the race but appeared Dalamar did need this race...all huge longshots, first and second, with him just missing the win and coming third paying over $6.00/show, this is a very good horse, speed, don't know if he was claimed? Do you Chris? Don

Don - yes, Dalamar ran like a horse that was a little short. No, he wasn't claimed.
