News and Notes

A couple of nice debuts for 3-year-old fillies with famous siblings. Maggie McGowan (Salt Lake - Jewel of the Night by Giant's Causeway), half sister to grade I winner Evening Jewel, was a winner in her first try, at 5.5 furlongs at Santa Anita. She was up with the pace from the start, and then pulled away for a 2 1/4 length victory. Watch the Replay. At Fair Grounds, Might (Arch - Liable by Seeking the Gold), the full sister to Champion Blame, got off to a slow start, but was running well late to finish 2nd at 6 furlongs. Watch the Replay.

Sinai (colt; Rockport Harbor - Dontgetinmyway by Machiavellian) was (pardon the pun) no factor in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. He finished 5th, in front of only early pace presser City Cool. The winner was The Factor, in another impressive performance. Watch the Replay. Read more about the San Vicente here.

A Million Dollar Winner

Claire's Song (Unbridled's Song - Chimichurri by Elusive Quality) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. The entry of In Step (Unbridled's Song - Strawberry Reason by Strawberry Road (AUS)) and Enrichment (Ghostzapper - Sahara Gold by Seeking the Gold), and Savvy Supreme (Distorted Humor - Outsource by Storm Bird) took all the money, going off at identical odds. Rockport Picture (Rockport Harbor - Truart by Yes It's True) was almost 18-1. She was kicking up her heels in the paddock, and Savvy Supreme was looking good. Enrichment was a tad stubborn at the load, and Rockport Picture was off slowly. Savvy Supreme and In Step went for the lead, with Savvy Supreme grabbing it. They continued 1-2 into the stretch, when In Step began to wear down the pacesetter. She got by late for a 1/2 length victory, earning $23,100 toward her $1,000,000 price tag. Moving well late to pick up third was her entrymate Enrichment, who was going best at the finish. Rockport Picture couldn't overcome her start, finishing 7th. Interestingly, Big Happy Blur (Dixieland Band - Bejat by Mr. Prospector), the filly who had finished 4th on February 13, was part of the pace early, but tired to last. Watch the Replay.

Macedon Charges Home

There were no scratches, as all 9 ran. Outofsiteoutofmind (Out of Place - Never a Bride by Belong to Me) was favored, Milky May (Bluegrass Cat - Cabo Sunrise by Elusive Quality) was 26-1. He went right to the lead, however, pressed by Outofsitoutofmind. Also up close was Promisethemoon (Malibu Moon - Hooky by Skip Away). Milky May continued to lead after 6 furlongs, with Promisethemoon moving into second. Coming into the picture was debuting Macedon (Afleet Alex - True Love by Affirmed). He moved even with the pace, and then blew them away. The winning margin was 6 1/4 lengths. Promisethemoon held second, and Billy was a nose better than Milky May in third. A decent debut for Milky May, who was by far the best three-year-old in the race (the only other three-year-old, Outofsiteoutofmind, was 7th.). Watch the Replay.
