News and Notes

New worker for Corinthian: Stauffenberg (colt; Corinthian - Valkyries' Ride by Dixieland Band) worked 2 furlongs in :26.40 at Santa Anita. He sold for $2,000 as a yearling, and for $6,000 as a 2-year-old. He is a half brother to the winner Shofar. Their dam, Valkyries' Ride, is a half sister to three winners, including stakes winner Grand Deed. I assume that the name comes from Claus von Stauffenberg, who was part of the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler. Stauffenberg was played by Tom Cruise in the movie version. However, Valkyries' Ride probably refers to the Wagner work (more commonly known as The Ride of The Valkyries), especially since she is by Dixieland Band. You may be familiar with the music as used in Apocalype Now and elsewhere.

Ms Silver Oak Stakes the Kitten

Entrymates Rock the Moon (Malibu Moon - A Song in A Minor by Real Quiet) and AE entrant Strike It Green (Smart Strike - Green Noble by Green Dancer) were out, as well as MTO Draw It (Tapit - Illustrated by Deputy Minister), since the race stayed on the firm turf. AE entrant Exchange Miss (Exchange Rate - Storm Miss by Storm Creek) drew into the race. Ms Silver Oak (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Songthrush by Unbridled's Song) was the even money choice. Littlegreatone (Bernardini - Megahertz (GB) by Pivotal (GB)) was ignored at 30-1. However, she made a decent appearance. Malibu Spice (Malibu Moon - Buxton Spice by Bold Ruckus) had some spunk as they went to the track. I couldn't fault the appearance of the favorite, but High On Kitten (Kitten's Joy - High Chant by War Chant) looked good as well. The start was fair. Malibu Spice went for the lead, but High On Kitten was right there too. Littlegreatone was at the back. The fractions were pedestrian: :24.76, :50.09, but soon Littlegreatone was making some progress. High On Kitten hit the front, but Ms Silver Oak was coming. High On Kitten fought, but Ms Silver Oak wore her down for a 1 1/4 length victory. Littlegreatone just got her head in front of a tiring Saucy Jade (Rock Hard Ten - Nureyev's Encore by Nureyev) for third. Another good effort from her. Any mile and a quarter maiden turf races out there? Ms Silver Oak and High On Kitten had finished 2nd and 3rd in their most recent start. Watch the Replay.

Thanks to OTB not airing Gulstream, I wasted a trip and missed Break up the Game winning, ugh, lol. Bomber Boy ran third, so it was a good race for the Bernardinis. That Heron Lake race BUTG is coming out of is a huge key race.

Thank you for posting that! Nice performance from all colts.

Wilburn is taking some $$ in his debut......

Wow.

Wilburn just walloped his field. He showed a very good turn of foot and drew away to win by about 5, 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:13 and change. He's out of a Carson City mare so who knows how far he wants to go, but as the analyst on the racing channel said, so was Barbaro. No, I'm not comparing them at ALL, just saying that maybe this guy will take after his sire.

Wilburn certainly did not disappoint in his first start!

AZ finished a tiring 3rd in the Oaks, but I didn't think it was a bad race at all considering she hadn't run since the BC

Stay Thirsty wins! Nice performance too - rated very comfortably off slow fractions, made a nice move around the turn and drew away in good order. The speed guys won't be impressed, but after all it was a slow pace

Yes, a wonderful day for the Bernardinis. I'm glad Stay Thirsty won but was not totally convinced with the win, then again, a win is a win. Break Up the Game is improving with ever race while Wilburn looks very promising.

BUTGame up in time while looking very strong. Surprised Shug sent him again in another 7 furlong contest instead of sending him a little longer seeing that he has been closing very well in his last two. This horse may turn out to be Shugs best bet at the TC along with Data Link...if he switches him to the dirt. There is also Point of Entry by Dynaformer out of Matlacha Pass(Streakers half bro). He ran well closing strongly his last. Could be a good time for Shug and Phipps. Easy Goer was a long time ago.

I was at Santa Anita and Wilburn won like a nice colt.  Unfortunately, like so many at this Santa Anita meet, it's a little late to be thinking Derby, but there are alot of rich spots later in the year for 3 year olds.
