Stay Thirsty (colt; Bernardini - Marozia by Storm Bird) sat off the early pace set by The Fed Eased in the Gotham Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct, and then made his move in the stretch. He went by the stubborn Norman Asbjornson, and then pulled away for a 3 1/4 length win. Toby's Corner (colt; Bellamy Road - Brandon's Ride by Mister Frisky) was a non-threatening third, after being rank early. Norman Asbjornson's jockey claimed foul against Stay Thirsty, but it was not allowed. It wasn't the flashiest performance, or the fastest time, but it was a nice way to stay off his 2011 campaign. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Gotham here.

May Day Rose (filly; Rockport Harbor - May Day Bluff by Pine Bluff) set the pace in the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) as expected, but A Z Warrior (filly; Bernardini - Carson Jen by Carson City) was not far off. May Day Rose and A Z Warrior continued 1-2 for 6 furlongs, but company was coming. Both Turbulent Descent (Congrats - Roger's Sue by Forestry) and Zazu (Tapit - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley) swept on by, with Turbulent Descent holding off Zazu by a neck. A Z Warrior was no match for the top two, but she was clear in third. May Day Rose tired to finish 5th (last). Watch the Replay. Read more about the Santa Anita Oaks here.

Another Silver Oak (colt; Bluegrass Cat - Off the Richter by Richter Scale) was involved at the start of the 6 furlong Fred "Cappy" Capossela Stakes at Aqueduct, but began to back up after a quarter, finishing 5th (last). There were three horses right there at the finish, with Bobby Flay's Sensational Slam getting the win. Watch the Replay.

R Fast Cat (Bluegrass Cat - R Fast Lady by Artax) and Blue Laser (colt; Bluegrass Cat - With a Princess by With Approval) had no response for Positive Response (Pomeroy - Lisa's Approval by Farma Way), who took the lead at the start of the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park, and went on to win by 7. R Fast Cat finished 8th, and Blue Laser was 9th (last). Watch the Replay.

Wilburn Rocks Santa Anita

There were no scratches, as 7 ran on the fast track. Chico d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Colorado Song by Pine Bluff), second in his debut, was the heavy favorite. Wilburn (Bernardini - Moonlight Sonata by Carson City) was 7-2. He looked like a runner. I also liked the look of Smug (El Prado (IRE) - Prospinsky by Mr. Prospector), who warmed up nicely. Wilburn outbroke the field, but Chico d'Oro and Rock So Hard (Rock Hard Ten - So Cheerful by Fortunate Prospect) came through to set the pace. Wilburn assumed a stalking position. He moved closer on the turn, and was soon even with Chico d'Oro. Then, Wilburn swooped to the lead. Purely Awesome (Awesome Again - Pure Wool by Relaunch) moved into second, but there was no catching Wilburn, who pulled away to a 3 1/4 length victory. This was a debut worth waiting for, as Wilburn stopped the clock in 1:13.95. Watch the Replay.

Breaking Up the Game

Moon On Fire (Malibu Moon - Rich Legacy by Polish Numbers), entrymate of Bomber Boy (Bernardini - Here I Go by Mr. Prospector), was the only scratch. The track was fast. Fire With Fire (Distorted Humor - Cosmic Fire by Capote) was favored. Break Up the Game (Bernardini - Pennant Champion by Mr. Prospector) was 5-2, and Bomber Boy was 10-1. This was a nice looking group. Jack London (Tale of the Cat - Frost Princess by Waquoit) had lots of energy, and Bomber Boy made a good impression on the track. Break Up the Game was a little sweaty. The start was fair. Jack London took the lead, with Bomber Boy after him. Fire With Fire was not far off, and Break Up the Game was near the back early. Bomber Boy got by Jack London in the stretch, but Break Up the Game was flying from off the pace and went by for the win. Debuting Ninety Schillings (Distorted Humor - Madame Pandit by Wild Again) got up for second over Bomber Boy, who also had a positive debut. Break Up the Game showed promise from his first start, and is starting to look like a professional racehorse out there. Watch the Replay.

Alstom Diggs Out a Win

All 8 ran on the fast track. Gaither Draw (Smarty Jones - Missadryannaatto by Green Dancer) was favored, and Major Duomo (Bernardini - Karis Makaw by Charismatic) was 6-1. Petition for Gold (Petionville - Purely Excessive by In Excess (IRE)) and Street Swagger (Street Cry (IRE) - Etiole by Atticus) looked good to me. Dakota Digger (More Than Ready - Madeline P by Theatrical (IRE)) went to the front, with Major Duomo pressing. Roman Flame (Roman Ruler - Pretty Flame by Mt. Livermore) and Please Endorse (Canadian Frontier - Enchant by War Chant) were also up close. Dakota Digger sprinted away to a four length lead, as Major Duomo weakened. It seemed as though Dakota Digger was home free, but late on the scene was first-timer Alstom (Silver Train - Miss Special Salsa by Mr. Greeley), who went by everyone for the victory. Dakota Digger was another 5 lengths in front of Please Endorse in third, with Major Duomo just behind him in fourth. Watch the Replay.

Big Win for Albert

Tapanna (Tapit - Stormy Sunday by Sir Cat) was the only scratch. Big Albert (Albert the Great - Buckeye Belle by Lyphard's Wish (FR)) was the even money choice. Milky May (Bluegrass Cat - Cabo Sunrise by Elusive Quality) was 4-1, and Rob's Rock (Rockport Harbor - Nuvem by Dynaformer) was almost 11-1. Rebels Roost (Eddington - Pleasant Deception by Darby Creek Road) looked good on the track, as did Milky May. Big Albert went right to the lead. Milky May was in second, and Grace's Devil (Devil His Due - Go Grace Go by Sefapiano) was right there too. Sir P. T. Chalone (Thunder Gulch - Velocista by Artax) was left at the start. Jo the Cat (Tapit - Simply Catty by Storm Cat) made a move to reach contention, but Big Albert continued on top, and built up a 4 length lead. Coming on strong at the end was Sir P. T. Chalone. He got all the way into second after his poor start, but couldn't catch Big Albert. Jo the Cat settled for third. Milky May weakened to 8th after his early involvement, and Rob's Rock never really got in gear, finishing 10th (last). Watch the Replay.

I thought ST's race was the perfect prep  and he ran really well - you could tell Pletcher was very pleased. Apparently the guys on TVG ripped him apart, but oh well, lol.

Wilburn is monstrous - he must be over 17 hands; Mike Smith looked tiny on this giant's back, lol. What a talented horse - hard to believe he first started working in December of 2009!

I love Break up the Game - he's really quite talented. It looked to me like he was further back in this race than he was in his prior, but I could be wrong. He's got nice closing kick - we'll see if he wants to go long or if he's a closing sprinter.  Bomber Boy sure acquitted himself well.

I thought AZ ran hard and well yesterday, but she just got tired. I look forward to seeing where she goes next - very nice filly.

Stay Thirsty looked very good, but I agree that Wilburn was most impressive of the Bernardinis yesterday. Lovely conformation with a grand way of moving to my eye, suggesting a classic distance would be within his scope. It will be very interesting to see where Asmussen sends him next.

All these Cal based horses look like monsters. The tracks are fast as heck. Wilburn looks like Pegasus butlike Betsy, I realy like Break up the Game. This horse is coming around so hope he can muster some graded money. Hope Shug can take the chance and send him somewhere like the Wood and deal with Uncle Mo.Hey,what does he have to lose.

I would not point Break up the Game to any Classic at this point - all he's done is break his maiden. I'd like to see him work through his conditions first - and let's see how he does stretching out also.

I think even though Butg has only just won he seems to be taking the same path as Accelerator whom Shug placed in the Wood after only winning one race in Florida. He was a closing second in the Wood if I'm not mistaken. This horse is becoming a real professional.
