Tying Up Loose Ends

I hope everyone is having a good Man o' War's birthday. Enjoy this slideshow honoring the great horse.

This is mostly a post updating results and works, as the 2-year-olds begin to take over. Since there are no Maiden Special Weights for the Maiden Watch 3-year-olds for March 30 or March 31, I will not do a blog tomorrow. However, I will tweet any new 2-year-old workers during that period

New Workers

March 26

Don't Spin Me (colt; Hard Spun - Maple Syrple by American Chance) went 2 furlongs in :24.20 at Nelson Jones Farm and Training Center on a track labeled good. Don't Spin Me brought $150,000 as a yearling, and is out of stakes winner Maple Syrple. Maple Syrple won her first 2 races at 2, including the Clarendon Stakes, and earned $170,892 overall. Maple Syrple has produced group III winner Golden Century and stakes-placed Maple Forest, both debut winners at 2. Maple Syrple is a half sister to one winner.

March 27

Optimizer (colt; English Channel - Indy Pick by A. P. Indy) worked 3 furlongs in :39.20 at Churchill Downs. He is out of the winning mare Indy Pick, who was a winner at 2. Indy Pick has produced the winner Humdinger. Indy Pick is a half sister to 9 winners, including grade I winner Finder's Fee and Tax Ruling, a grade I winner over jumps.

Also working 3 furlongs in :39.20 at Churchill Downs was Skyring (colt; English Channel - Violet Lady by Seattle Slew). I wasn't there, but I am assuming that Optimizer and Skyring worked together. Skyring is a half brother to 7 winners, including stakes winner Caballero Negro, and grade II winner Greenspring. One of his siblings won at 2, and another was stakes-placed that season. Violet Lady, dam of Skyring, is a full sister to one winner, and a half sister to 4 winners.

March 28

Ravin's Rich Girl (filly; Corinthian - Betz Brush by Broad Brush) worked at Eclipse Training Center, 3 furlongs in :39.60. She sold for $25,000 as a yearling, and is a half sister to 2 winners, including stakes winner For All Who Dream. For All Who Dream won 2 races at 2, her debut and the J J'sdream Stakes. Betz Brush, dam of Ravin's Rich Girl, is a half sister to 9 winners, including stakes winner Blazing Colors.

Stakes Results

Cassy Sue (filly; Bluegrass Cat - She's a Jewel by Successful Appeal) dropped back to trail in the Sunland Oaks, and passed a tired rival late to finish 5th. The winner was huge favorite Plum Pretty (Medaglia d'Oro - Liszy by A.P. Indy) by an impressive 25 lengths. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Sunland Oaks here.

Sinai (colt; Rockport Harbor - Dontgetinmyway by Machiavellian) was favored in the Sunland Derby (gr. III), and set a fast pace: :22.61, :45.03, 1:10.89. But, this pace took its toll, and he staggered home in last (11th). Apparently, someone forgot to tell Martin Garcia that it was a mile and an eighth. The winner was 25-1 Twice the Appeal (Successful Appeal - Double Boarded by Cormorant), with Astrology (A.P. Indy - Quiet Eclipse by Quiet American) finishing second, and Ruler On Ice (Roman Ruler - Champagne Glow by Saratoga Six) closing to third. Of these three, I'm kind of partial to Ruler On Ice, half brother to grade I winner Champagne d'Oro. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Sunland Derby here.

Ready Interest for a Win

Only the AEs, Elusive Tara (Elusive Quality - Lenatareese by Broad Brush) and Phantom Maria (El Prado (IRE) - Maria's Mirage by Maria's Mon), and MTO Circumstance (Vindication - Scapegoat by Forty Niner) were scratched. The track was firm. Henny Blues (Hennessy - Capote Blues by Capote) was favored, Featherwing (Rockport Harbor - Tasso Run by Cherokee Run) was 8-1, and Broadway Tune (Bluegrass Cat - Sung in Tune by Unbridled's Song) was almost 53-1. Featherwing looked ready to roll, and was off well. She assumed a pressing position, as Forget the Weather (Stormy Atlantic - Wedded Bliss by His Majesty) led the way. Forget the Weather shook free from Featherwing in the stretch, but the closers were coming. Leading these was Ready Interest (More Than Ready - King's Interest by Kingmambo), who got up for a 1/2 length win. Closing from way back was Troika (Lion Heart - School for Scandal by Is It True), who swept by Forget the Weather for second. Featherwing tired to 6th. I was a little disappointed with her showing, as I thought this one was just right for her. Broadway Tune was near the back early, and passed a few to finish 7th. Watch the Replay.

Very nice slide show Chris of Man of War, wasn't some big time heavyweight boxer part owner or involved with him? I used to have an old photo on my hospital library office wall but when I retired I took it down, will have to research it again.  Rockport Radiance was a set back for me yesterday at PARX, and with unexpected scratches in 2nd race cost me my pick 3, the pick 4 was big (signer) for me though...Don

Thanks for the Man O' War slide show.  Red set the standard for performance both on the track and in the breeding shed.  In my opinion, the greatest ever.
