Wicked Hard (colt; Hard Spun - Pennant Winner by Crafty Prospector) worked 2 furlongs in :25.40 at Woodbine. He sold for $85,000 as a weanling, and for $52,000 as a yearling. Uncle Mo received most of the ink before the Wood Memorial (gr. I), and he made most of the pace. He opened up some in the stretch, but didn't seem to have his usual punch. Both Arthur's Tale (colt; Bernardini - Owsley by Harlan) and Toby's Corner (colt; Bellamy Road - Brandon's Ride by Mister Frisky) were coming. Arthur's Tale got the jump, and briefly took the lead. But, he couldn't hold off Toby's Corner, who came through for the victory. Uncle Mo had to settle for third. I hope that I wasn't the only one who had the Maiden Watch exacta. Grade I winner Toby's Corner now has 4 wins and 2 thirds in 6 starts, with earnings of $722,240. Grade I stakes-placed Arthur's Tale has now earned $277,070, with 2 wins, one second, and one third in 8 starts. Toby's Corner is owned by Dianne Cotter, who also bred him. She also bred his sire Bellamy Road, who won the Wood Memorial by 17 impressive lengths. Bellamy Road was favored in the 2005 Kentucky Derby, but finished 7th. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Wood here.

Zoebear (gelding; Bellamy Road - Inthemiddleofitall by Proper Reality) was unhurried early in the Illinois Derby (gr. III) at Hawthorne, as Lagoon of Diamonds and Joe Vann battled up front, with The Fed Eased near the lead as well. Joe Vann put them away, and pulled away for a 4 1/4 length win. Zoebear was no threat to him, but he did take second over The Fed Eased. He may still be a maiden, but Zoebear is now grade III stakes-placed, with earnings of $89,844. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Illinois Derby here.

Kathmanblu (filly; Bluegrass Cat - Abba Gold by Devil's Bag) settled off the pace early in the Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland, and then made a bid on the outside, but could get no closer than third. The winner was 48-1 Lilacs and Lace, who took the lead out of the gate, and never relinguished it. Kathmanblu didn't not seem to have her usual explosive kick. I'm not sure if it was the Polytrack, or something else. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Ashland here.

Buffum (colt; Bernardini - Storm Beauty by Storm Cat) was in a tight spot on the inside early in the Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct. He had to check several times, and ended up near the back. Once clear, he rallied a bit to finish in a deadheat for fourth. The winner was J J's Lucky Train, who just got up over pacesetter Vengeful Wildcat. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Bay Shore here.

A Higher Court Prevails

There were no scratches. Red Maserati (Songandaprayer - Miss Mary Pat by Service Stripe) was the heavy favorite. Duke of Del Rey (Rockport Harbor - Queen Dido by Thunder Gulch) was dismissed at 29-1, but he looked lively in the post parade. Tyrus (First Samurai - Beauty's Due by Devil His Due) was on his toes, and Higher Court (Shamardal - Nawaiet by Zilzal) was bucking and playing. In My Rear View (Farkle - Mt. View's Pride by Belong to Me) was fractious in the gate. John McKee flew off of him, caught nicely by the assistant starter. McKee got back up, and they were off. Higher Court went to the front, with Red Maserati chasing. They set a quick pace, :22.20, :45.20. In the stretch, Higher Court pulled away from Red Maserati, and went on to score a 6 length win. Duke of Del Rey was running well late to pick up second, and Tyrus made up some ground for third. Very nice debut from Higher Court, but not a bad first career start for Duke of Del Rey. The King of the Post

All eight ran on the Polytrack. Irish Frankie (Teton Forest - Time Honored by Gilded Time) was favored, and Major Duomo (Bernardini - Karis Makaw by Charismatic) was 9-2. I was kind of liking first-timer I'vebeensickuknow (City Zip - Deer Ridge by Deerhound), but he was reluctant to load. Totemtale (Touch Gold - Tumble Me Right (JPN) by Forty Niner) was slow to start. Kingpost (Royal Academy - Miss Class Action by Alleged) was on top early, with Irish Frankie involved as well. Major Duomo had a decent spot in third. Kingpost continued to lead, and pulled away in the stretch. He crossed the line 7 3/4 lengths in front. Late starting Totemtale was rolling late to pick up second. Major Duomo lacked some punch late, but he did have enough gumption to get his nose down to win the show photo. Interesting that the fractions of this race were faster than the identically conditioned 5th race, but the final time was slower. Watch the Replay.

Glickman is On Fire

All 6 ran on the fast track. Glickman (Trippi - Heaven's Notebook by Notebook) was just a tick lower than Percussion (Bluegrass Cat - Cradlesong by Pine Bluff) in the wagering. Moon On Fire (Malibu Moon - Rich Legacy by Polish Numbers) looked like a million in the paddock. The start was good, although Moon On Fire was a tad slow in the early going. Swinging Tune (Concorde's Tune - Polish Holiday by Danzig) went to the front, pressed by Glickman. Percussion was off the pace. Swinging Tune and Glickman continued 1-2, with Glickman getting closer. Make Reservations (Tapit - Formal Reception by Unbridled) was just off these, with Moon On Fire starting to get involved. Percussion went very wide on the turn. I thought he might be pulled up, but he finished the race and even beat one. Up front, Glickman took over. He pulled away from Swining Tune for a 3 3/4 length victory. Moon On Fire was going well late to take second, and Make Reservations held third, as first-timers completed the trifecta. Watch the Replay.

A Winner Someplace Else

All eleven ran, and the track was fast. Canadian Mistress (Canadian Frontier - Mistress Winny by Winthrop) was favored, and Random Zing (Rockport Harbor - Loramateal by Storm Creek) was 7-1. Someplace Else (Harlan's Holiday - Superfine City by Carson City) and Deluxe Heir (Wildcat Heir - Deluxe Edition (IRE) by Caerleon) battled early. Miss Jackson Grace (Speightstown - Useewhatimsaying by A.P. Indy) was also in the early mix. Random Zing was at the back. Someplace Else and Deluxe Heir continued to spar, as The Mimosa Lady (Afleet Alex - Swinging by Wild Again) moved into the picture, and Miss Jackson Grace dropped back. Someplace Else shook from her pursuers, and went on to a 2 3/4 length victory. The Mimosa Lady was the best of the rest, and Boca (Closing Argument - Suave Lady by Line In The Sand) made some late run to finish third. Random Zing never really got involved, finishing 11th (last). Watch the Replay.
