News and Notes

It was good to see Wilburn (colt; Bernardini - Moonlight Sonata by Carson City) back in the Winner's Circle, as he took race 9 at Churchill Downs on Sunday, May 15, a 1 1/16 mile Allowance/Optional Claiming race. He stalked the pacesetter, Hidden Punch, bounded away in the stretch, and had enough late to hold off the closing Infrattini. The time was 1:45.15 over the sloppy track. Watch the Replay.

The sale topper at Barretts May 2-year-old sale was a Hard Spun colt (Hard Spun - Sweet Minister by The Prime Minister), who brought $220,000. He is out of stakes winner Sweet Minister, who won 2 races at 2, including her debut. Sweet Minister has produced 4 winners from 5 to run, including grade I winner Sinister Minister. Read more about the colt, and the sale here.

Grade II winner Oprah Winney's first foal, the 2-year-old filly Lady Ban Shee (Ghostzapper - Oprah Winney by Royal Academy) was a winner in her first start on May 17, in a 4.5 furlong race at Prairie Meadows. Nice looking win, and a great name. Watch the Replay.

A Banner Win

All six ran in the rain on the Polytrack. The Wesley Ward trained Rockstar Richie (Bring the Heat - Deserving Honor by Honour and Glory), the only entrant with experience, was the heavy favorite. He broke best, and sprinted away from the field. Filly Henny's Heart (Henny Hughes - Heart Lake by Unbridled) took after him. She looked like she might go by, but Rockstar Richie was tough. On the scene late was Banner Bill (Rockport Harbor - Temporada by Summer Squall), who overcame a tardy start. These three finished together, but it was Banner Bill who got the victory, by 3/4 length. Henny's Heart took second by a nose over Rockstar Richie. It was more than four back to Gin Joint (Macho Uno - Phil's Pill by Cozzene) in fourth. The Mighty Sparrow (Stevie Wonderboy - Spring Fair by Cozzene), the first runner for Stevie Wonderboy, was fifth, and Get the Patience (Badge of Silver - Dynamic Girl by Bold Executive) brought up the rear. Watch the Replay.

Fulfilling Promise

The only scratch was Redbud Road (Awesome of Course - Ladyinareddress by Tactical Advantage), part of an entry. The remaining part of that entry, Awesome Belle (Awesome of Course - Bayou Plans by Bayou Hebert), was favored. Also getting play was Let's Get Lucky (Best of the Rest - Rodeo's Lady by Rodeo). The track was fast. Arabella's Tune (Concorde's Tune - Mary Kate 'n Kelly by Mecke) was a handful at the load, but she broke well and pressed the pace set by Royal Promise (Congrats - Royal Halo by Jolie's Halo). These two dueled for a time, but then Royal Promise pulled away. She went on to take the race by 2 3/4 lengths. Arabella's Tune held second over Awesome Belle, who overcame a slow beginning. Char Lena Jo (Bwana Charlie - Jovetta by Elusive Quality) was in a good position early, but tired to fourth. Image of Lady Rose (Hal's Image - First Ace by First Tour) ducked in at the start and finished 5th, British Queen (Johar - Clandestine Caller by Housebuster) was 6th, and Let's Get Lucky 7th, after starting slowly. I now feel a proprietary interest in Sark, having commented on the aptness of his name before.  So: GO SARK!

I also love Manx.  Any whispers about when he might start?

mz - Sark is a great name, and it would be a nice name for a first winner. I know of no whisperings regarding Manx, but he has been working with Sark, so should be soon.
