Too Much Power for Sark

News and Notes

Congratulations to Stay Thirsty (Bernardini - Marozia by Storm Bird) and all his connections for his big run to finish second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) Watch the Replay. Although he was probably aided by the conditions, it was good to see him turn in a positive performance. I hope that everyone had a good Belmont Stakes. Personally, I didn't cash a ticket. I had Stay Thirsty and Brilliant Speed in my exacta, and almost added Ruler On Ice, but almost gets you nothing.

First-year sire Latent Heat picked up his first winner on June 11, when the filly Starship Flash won at Calder. Watch the Replay.

Beer Run (filly; Hard Spun - Perfect Probe by Mr. Prospector) is scheduled to run on Friday, June 17 at Prairie Meadows. I will preview this race later in the week.

Too Much Power for Sark

The filly Specialgirls C T T (Quest - Sunny Skies by Halo) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. Firster Tiz Sardonic Joe (Tiznow - Distorted Blaze by Distorted Humor), half brother to grade III winner Joes Blazing Aaron, was favored. Sark (English Channel - November Snow by Storm Cat) was 4-1. Tiz Sardonic Joe spotted the field a few lengths, and Power World (Distorted Humor - Purrfectly by Storm Cat) was pinched back at the start, and ended up at the back. She Digs Me (Henny Hughes - Stage Stop by Valid Expectations) and Golden Ticket (Speightstown - Business Plan by Deputy Minister) dueled, with Sark moving to join them on the turn. She Digs Me began to pull away from the others. But, closing from the back was Power World. He flew by his competition for a good length victory. She Digs Me held second over Sark. Elusive Story (Tale of the Cat - Elusive Honey by Elusive Quality) and Archenland (Lion Heart - Babe's Flair by Capote) both made up some ground to grab fourth and fifth. Golden Ticket tired to 6th, Tiz Sardonic Joe never really got involved, finishing 7th, and Truthorfiction (Scat Daddy - Genuine True by Yes It's True) was close up early, before tiring and finishing 8th (last). Not sure what Power World beat, but after his start, it was a nice performance. Sark has now run twice, and finished third both times. He should break through soon. Watch the Replay.

Im a Dixie Winner

Lan Lan (Noble Causeway - D Lan Lady by Whitesburg) was scratched, leaving 6 to run on the fast track. Clearly Wicked (Corinthian - Tzara Band by Dixieland Band) was favored. Tura Isabel (Forest Danger - Tap'n Tango by Elusive Quality) caught my eye in the paddock. Clearly Wicked was looking good, as they headed to the track. She broke best, but was shuffled back to the rear. Queen Anna (Bellamy Road - Hidden Falls by Real Quiet) and Came a Storm (Stormin Fever - Overcame by Conquistador Cielo) battled early. Tura Isabel was in a good spot in third, and Clearly Wicked was making progress, but running greenly. She moved into second, but was still having trouble running straight, and she couldn't catch Im a Dixie Diva. Queen Anna finished third, but was disqualified and placed fifth for interfering with Came a Storm. Tura Isabel and Came a Storm were placed third and fourth after the dq, and Mi Margarita (Mingun - Treasure Chest by Lemon Drop Kid) didn't show much, finishing 6th. I was a little surprised that Clearly Wicked was not claimed. She seems to have some talent, but needs to learn what to do with it. Watch the Replay.

Obviously others also think Sark might win soon -- from 11-1 or whatever he was in his first race to 4-1 in this one.  I'm rooting for him.

I also have to congratulate whoever named Tarsus.  Wonderful St. Paul reference (St. Paul the saint, not St. Paul the city).

Finally, could anyone explain how Yvete Sangalo became a Mexican-bred?  Wondered about that from the get-go -- just never asked before.

mz - Some folks were thinking when they named the Corinthians, nice to see.

Yvete Sangalo's dam, Ya Tarra, was purchased in foal at the 2008 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and sent to Mexico, where Yvete Sangalo was born on March 1, 2009. Thus, she is a Mexican-bred.

I may be wrong on this but I thought the dam had to be bred back in the jurisdiction, in this case Mexico, for the foal she just had, Yvette Sangelo, to be a registered Mexico bred.

Criminal Type - It varies by jurisdiction, it's not always required to be bred back. I am not up on the Mexican-rules, but I'm guessing that is not the case for Mexico, because Ya Tarra (dam of Yvete Sangalo) was bred to Distorted Humor in 2009. She does not have a foal reported for 2010, but that may be because she was sent to Argentina. The report may not have reached the U.S. yet. Phew, Ya Tarra sure gets around. Born and raced in England. She was then in Ireland, the U.S., Mexico, back to the U.S., and then to Argentina. Interestingly, her foals have raced in England, UAE, Greece, Japan, and the U.S. A globe-trotting family, apparently.

Ok, Thanks for explaining that for me. I wish I was that well traveled...haha.
