News and Notes

Things have been quiet of late, but we are back in business with an all-Corinthian Sunday, as he has four runners in three races.

MTO entrant Flower Mart (Street Sense - Coronado Rose by Coronado's Quest) did not get into race 6 at Belmont on June 29, as that race stayed on the turf. The winner was Alaura Michele (Arch - Isobel Baillie (GB) by Lomitas (GB)) by 4 1/4 lengths over Isra (Easing Along - Constant Companion by Relaunch) and Cat Girl (Discreet Cat - Famous Story by Rahy). Watch the Replay. Interestingly, Anna Sophia (Oasis Dream (GB) - Devout (AUS) by Dehere), entrymate of Alaura Michele, was scratched from the race, and broke her maiden on June 30 in race 2 at Belmont Park on the dirt. Watch the Replay.

A couple of good looking 2-year-old colts were unveiled at Belmont Park on July 1. Both are trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Repole Stable, and both were ridden by John Velazquez. Neither was a secret, either, as both paid under 4 dollars. In the 2nd, Overdriven (Tale of the Cat - Air France by French Deputy) was a 3 1/2 length winner, despite bobbling at the start. Watch the Replay. Overdriven sold for $200,000 as a weanling, and for $350,000 as a yearling. He is out of the winning mare Air France, who has produced three other winners, including grade II winner Smooth Air. In the 4th, Zow (Bluegrass Cat - Then She Laughs by Distorted Humor) went gate-to-wire for a 2 length victory. Watch the Replay. Zow was a $80,000 as a yearling, and is out of stakes winner Then She Laughs, who has produced 2 additional winners, including stakes-placed Hysterical Cat. Hysterical Cat is a full brother to Zow.

Filly What a Delight (Lawyer Ron - Western Delight by West by West) became the first North American winner for the late Lawyer Ron, with a 2 1/2 length victory on July 1 at Parx Racing. Watch the Replay. What a Delight sold for $55,000 as a weanling, and for $30,000 at 2. She is out of stakes winner Western Delight, who has now produced five winners from 5 to run.
