Motega Sweeps Away the Competition in the Hoover

I journeyed to River Downs to see Midnight Vader (Invasor - Allou by Seattle Slew) make his stakes debut in the 5.5 furlong Hoover Stakes. He was looking good in the paddock, but he is a big guy, and should get better as the distances get longer.

Midnight Vader headed to the post.

Midnight Vader got some respect at the windows, going off at close to 7-2. Most eyes, however, were on filly Motega (Yonaguska - Crafty Crypto by Crafty Prospector), who was the only horse with a previous win. She was even money throughout the wagering period. I thought Paige's Prize (Pure Prize - Paigie Slew by Fusaichi Pegasus) made a decent appearance, as well as Midnight Vader. Motega outbroke the field. Her closest pursuers were Paige's Prize and Risky Romance (De Hero - Glittering Risk by Take Me Out), with Not an Altar Boy (Teuflesberg - Laird's Honor by Honor Grades) just behind these. Midnight Vader was sitting off the pace. Paige's Prize stuck close for awhile, but in the stretch Motega really took off. She cruised home an amazing 17 lengths in front. Not an Altar Boy hung in there to take second, and Midnight Vader was running well late to pick up the show spot. He is still a maiden, but can now add stakes-placed to his resume. He is also the first stakes performer for his sire Invasor. The plan for Motega is to come back in two weeks for the Tah Dah Stakes at River Downs, which is for 2-year-old Ohio-bred fillies. Watch the Replay.

A Sweet Win

Meloveda (Sharp Humor - Sugar Run by Meadowlake) and Sweet Moonbeam (Bring the Heat - My Outlet by Montbrook) were scratched, leaving 5 on the Polytrack. Sweet and Lowdown (Street Sense - Mombasa by Dynaformer) was the heavy favorite, R Next Gem (English Channel - Jewels N Gems by Acceptable) was 5-1. Sweet and Lowdown broke like a Wesley Ward-trained horse should, in front, although a little inward. She was chased by Yorona (Storm Surge - Sumneytown by Deputy Commander) and Bluegrasskitten (Bluegrass Cat - Kilifi Creek by Gone West). R Next Gem did not get off to the best start, and had only one beat early. Sweet and Lowdown was never challenged, holding a clear lead throughout, to cross the line 5 lengths ahead. R Next Gem was flying late to nip Yorona by a nose for second. Circular Street (Friends Lake - Sweet Juliet by Crafty Prospector) and Bluegrasskitten completed the field. Sweet and Lowdown is the first U.S. winner for Street Sense, and his second winner overall. Watch the Replay.
