A Winning Finale

There were no scratches, and the turf was firm. Favoritism volleyed between Finale (Scat Daddy - Twinkle by Lively One), making his third start, and debuting Ur (Giant's Causeway - Sue's Last Dance by Forty Niner), with Finale getting the nod at post time. Knock Rock (Corinthian - Lady Cozzette by Cozzene) was dismissed at more than 14-1. Half Wed (Broken Vow - A. P. Surprise by Pulpit) caught my eye in the paddock. On the track, Finale looked like he knew that he was something. He received a strong warmup. Knock Rock looked decent, but I thought that he might need a race. There was some stubborness at the load. Finale and Knock Rock both got some kicks in, and Half Wed was impatient waiting for his turn. The start was fair. Skorton (Utopia (JPN) - Sari by Cozzene) went to the front. He was pursued by an eager Finale and Demon's Deputy (El Corredor - Jodys Deelite by Afternoon Deelites). Knock Rock was sitting fifth early, but was running a bit greenly. Skorton continued to lead, setting fast fractions: :22.41, :45.73. Finale was turned loose, and leapt to the lead. He sprinted away to win by 5 3/4 easy lengths. Two Months Rent (Purim - Sharp Tradition by Sharpen Up (GB)) came on for second, while Skorton held third over a closing Ur. Demon's Deputy tired to fifth, with Knock Rock 6th, and Half Wed, who really was never involved, bringing up the rear. Watch the Replay.
