News and Notes

Racing was cancelled at Monmouth on Saturday due to the extreme heat, so Channel Quest (English Channel - Primequest by Coronado's Quest) will have to wait to make his debut.

Lots of 2-year-old racing taking place everywhere this weekend. I'll note a couple that caught my eye. Please comment on any that you liked. At Saratoga on July 22, My Miss Aurelia (Smart Strike - My Miss Storm Cat by Sea of Secrets) outfought a game Delightful Magic (Mineshaft - Magic Kitty by Storm Cat) to take the 5th. Many will also be talking about third-place finisher Stopshoppingmaria (More Than Ready - Skybox by Spend a Buck), who overcame a wicked stumble at the break. All three fillies were making their first starts. Watch the Replay. Also at Saratoga on Friday, Georgie's Angel (Bellamy Road - Lalka by Dynaformer) looked pretty professional, sitting off the early speed, and then taking control to win the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III). She is now 2 for 2 in her young career. Closing nicely for second was True Feelings (Latent Heat - Grand Charmer by Lord Avie), who is by freshman sire Latent Heat. Watch the Replay. At Prairie Meadows on July 22, Praire Cougar (Smoke Glacken - Signaprenuptial by Dixie Union) broke her maiden by 14 1/4 lengths. Yes, it was a race restricted to Iowa-breds, but 14+ lengths in a 12 horse field, going 5.5 furlongs is something to see. Watch the Replay. On Saturday at Del Mar, the Bob Baffert-trained colt Secret Circle (Eddington - Ragtime Hope by Dixieland Band) was an impressive 7 1/4 length debut winner at 5.5 furlongs. Watch the Replay.

July 22 Result

Police Force (Street Sense - Land of Dreams (GB) by Cadeaux Genereux (GB)) finished 4th in his 7 furlong race at Ascot run on good to soft turf. He was in mid-pack early on, then began to make a run, and seemed poised for victory, but seemed to hit a wall. The winner was Caledonian Spring (Amadeus Wolf - Mathuna by Tagula). Caledonian Spring sold for $27,258 as a yearling, and for $67,110 as a 2-year-old. He is the first foal out of the winning mare Mathuna. Mathuna is a half sister to 4 winners, including stakes winner Round Heels and group III winner Wilside.

Like a Rocket

All 7 ran on the fast track in the heat at Saratoga. How Do I Win (Corinthian - Silver Crown by Distorted Humor) was 4-5, and Mr. Continental (Corinthian - Forty Gran by El Gran Senor) was 6-1. Whinston (Pomeroy - Leah's Angel by Caller I. D.) received a lot of attention from the bettors, and he was bouncing around on the track. Laurie's Rocket (Bluegrass Cat - Clay's Rocket by American Chance) looked good. Whinston bounded to the lead, bringing How Do I Win with him. These two separated from the others. Mr. Continental and Laurie's Rocket were together in third and fourth. Whinston and How Do I Win continued to battle, but Laurie's Rocket and Mr. Continental were closing the gap. Whinston continued to lead, but Laurie's Rocket was coming, and zoomed on by, to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Whinston was safely second over How Do I Win, who was a little green down the stretch. Covert Ops (Smoke Glacken - Collusion by Broad Brush) was switched to the rail for a late run to take fourth. Mr. Continental tired and finished 6th. Watch the Replay.

Lady Dakota Shuts the Door

Bahati Gold (Soft Gold (BRZ) - Bahati by Horse Chestnut (SAF)) and Soul Digger (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Seeking the Blue by Seeking the Gold) were scratched, leaving just four to run on the fast track. Sweet Saga (Slew's Saga - Cielo Dulce by Cahill Road), who had finished third in the Northwest Stallion Knights Choice Stakes was the heavy favorite. Hardbody (Hard Spun - Zaheemah by El Prado (IRE)) was respected at almost 2-1. Sweet Saga looked good in the prelims, and Hardbody looked ready for action. Lady Dakota (Dehere - Can't Buy Class by Elusive Quality) hopped at the start, and Lady in Silk (Delineator - Shimmer of Silk by Drone) stumbled and was at the back. Hardbody broke best, but Lady Dakota and Sweet Saga were there too. Lady Dakota pulled away from her rivals. Hardbody and Sweet Saga continued to chase, but first-timer Lady Dakota continued to hold them off, winning by 1 3/4 lengths. Hardbody was a clear second over Sweet Saga, and Lady in Silk never got involved. Watch the Replay.
