Stakes Result

Red Duke (colt; Hard Spun - Saudia by Gone West) finished third in the 7 furlong group II Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. He settled mid-pack early on, but was blocked when the real running began. The winner was Chandlery (Choisir - Masai Queen by Mujadil), who led most of the race. It's hard to say whether Red Duke would have caught Chandlery, if he had gotten free, but he surely didn't get a chance. Richard Hannon trains the winner, and three other horses that were in the race, and his charges were doing much the blocking of Red Duke. However, it seemed to me that Kieren Fallon did not deliver the best ride on Red Duke to be caught unawares by the maneuvering of his rivals. Watch the replay.

Showing Some Pride

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. J C's Pride (Henny Hughes - Hi Lili by Silver Deputy), second behind Overdriven on July 24, was the overwhelming favorite. Mr. Style (Bluegrass Cat - Number One Girl by Tiznow) received some respect at 9-2. Hard Nosed (Hard Spun - Katy Kat by Forest Wildcat) was 11-1. J C's Pride looked good in the paddock, and Ventura Bar (Officer - Ventura Hotel by Grand Slam) caught my eye. J C's Pride sprung to the front at the break. Mr. Style and Hard Nosed were chasing. J C's Pride was steady on the lead, and Mr. Style continued to chase. J C's Pride was running easily, but began to pull away. He was 3 1/4 lengths in front at the wire. Mr. Style was clear in second, 8 3/4 lengths in front of third-place Delta Ranger (Mr. Greeley - Ever Hopeful by With Approval), who was just in front of Ventura Bar. Chalybeate Springs (Dynaformer - Chaposa Springs by Baldski) checked in fifth, and Hard Nosed was 6th, after his early involvement. J C's Pride stopped the clock in :56.54, a new track record for 5 furlongs. Watch the Replay. Read more about the race here.

A Winning State of Play

Both halves of the entry of Politicallycorrect (Kitten's Joy - Exceedexpectations by Tale of the Cat) and Ten W Forty (Kitten's Joy - Heavenly Oil by Golden Missile) were scratched, leaving 8 to run on the good turf. Doctor Chit (War Front - True Gritz by Yes It's True) was favored. Sark (English Channel - November Snow by Storm Cat), the only entrant with experience, was 3-1. Arthur (Artie Schiller - Janeian (NZ) by The Jogger) looked good at first glance. Sark looked ready to go in the post parade, and State of Play (War Front - Valeta by Procida) got a nice warmup. The start was good. Woods Hole (Kitalpha - Divine Wine by Father Steve) was on the lead, but Sark was right there, and State of Play was not far off. State of Play swung wide coming into the stretch, and went to the lead. Sark continued on in second, as Woods Hole retreated. State of Play ran on, winning by 2 1/2 lengths. Sark held second over a closing Arthur. Tiger Walk (Tale of the Cat - Majestic Trail by Kris S.) made up some ground to take fourth. Favorite Doctor Chit checked in 6th. Watch the Replay.
