July 30 Results

The First Corinthian is My People

The race was taken off of the turf, and run at 5 furlongs on the fast main track. Mad Dancer (Mr. Sekiguchi - Louie's Tap Dancer by Louis Quatorze) was the only scratch. Shisha (Smoke Glacken - Song of the Moment by River Special) took the early money, but My People (Corinthian - Last Vice by Vice Regent) was favored at post time. Channel Quest (English Channel - Primequest by Coronado's Quest) was 13-1. His connections probably would have prefered the turf. I kind of liked the look of Al Dente (D'wildcat - Lotsa Pasta by Beau Genius), as they left the paddock. My People looked ready, and Shisha made a good appearance. Channel Quest looked like he might need more distance to get his legs unfolded. Al Dente was stubborn at the load. The jockey hopped off, and in he went. My People went for the lead, along with Mambo Bay (Black Mambo - Baybrooke by Montbrook). Mr. Ast (First Samurai - Capacity by Capote) was close as well. My People and Mambo Bay knocked heads for a time, but My People pulled away. He was off the rail, and had some trouble changing leads, but he took the win by 2 lengths. Mr. Ast came on for second, Shisha closed for third after bobbling at the start, and Channel Quest ran fairly evenly, finishing 5th. My People is the first winner for Corinthian. Watch the Replay.

She is Hard Not to Like

The turf was firm, and only the AEs were scratched. The bettors had a little trouble settling on a favorite. Leeson Street Lady (Kitten's Joy - Miss Stuck Up by One Way Love) took some early money, but Sca Doodle (Scat Daddy - Bubbly Baily by Dixie Union) was the slight choice at post time. Hard Not to Like (Hard Spun - Like a Gem by Tactical Cat) was 5-1. She is a striking gray, and looked ready for action. Kiama (Ghostzapper - Wedded Woman by Siphon (BRZ)), who was disqualified after finishing first on July 8, made a good impression. On the track, I was still liking Hard Not to Like, and Grace O'Malley (Bob and John - Marina Duff (IRE) by Caerleon) also looked good. She acting up a bit at loading time, and was a little stubborn. She started a trend, as the couple fillies after her also required a shove in the gate. The break was a little scattered, Grace O'Malley ducked in and Champagne Dynasty (Pulpit - La Dolce Vita by Quiet American) was off slowly. Leeson Street Lady, Pulpation (Pulpit - Floral Beauty by Gone West), and Kiama were all up front. Kiama and Pulpation continued to battle, but coming into the picture was Hard Not to Like. She rolled past the frontrunners, to win by 1/2 length. Kiama held second over Pulpation, and Leeson Street Lady was back in fourth. Hard Not to Like is the 7th winner for Hard Spun. Captain of the Turf

The turf was good. The AEs, including Winston C (Corinthian - The Happy Hopper by El Prado (IRE)), and MTO Street Fight (Street Sense - Reportedly by Silver Deputy) were scratched. Captain Webb (English Channel - Miss Mary Pat by Service Stripe) was favored. He looked good, but the combination of Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez probably helped. Quiet Danger (Bernardini - Amansara by War Chant) looked good at first glance. Saturday Classic (Any Given Saturday - Classic Approval by With Approval) put in a good appearance. There was a scramble for the early lead, with Captain Webb among the scramblers. Longshot Honor Call (Empire Maker - Collect Call by Meadowlake) put his head in front, pursued by Master Achievement (Master Command - Mysteryachievement by Regal Classic). Quiet Danger was off slowly, and Furman Bisher (Langfuhr - Millashand by Regal Intention) pulled up shortly after the start. Captain Webb made his move, and hit the front. Daddy Nose Best (Scat Daddy - Follow Your Bliss by Thunder Gulch) and Saturday Classic were both closing well, but Captain Webb was home free, winning by 2 1/2 lengths. Daddy Nose Best, who had to steady earlier claimed second over Saturday Classic. Pacesetter Honor Call held on to fourth. Interestingly, freshman sires finished 1-2-3 in this one, with Captain Webb (English Channel), Daddy Nose Best (Scat Daddy), and Saturday Classic (Any Given Saturday). Captain Webb is the second winner for English Channel and his first one on the turf. Watch the Replay.

A Winning Property

All 12 ran on the fast track. First-timer Shared Property (Scat Daddy - Yoursmineours by Belong to Me) was favored. Motor City (Street Sense - Shawgatny by Danzig Connection) received some attention at 6-1. C for Chant (War Chant - Shiny Prize by Prized) caught my eye. Motor City looked good on the track, but I couldn't fault the favorite. Big Lucky (Congrats - My Agenda by Twilight Agenda), Francois (Smarty Jones - Kalahari Cat by Cape Town), and favorite Shared Property were off slowly. Motor City was in the battle for the lead, along with Future (Mr. Greeley - Upcoming Story by Tale of the Cat), Aegisadvantage (Henny Hughes - Balancing Act by Spectacular Bid), and Peter Louis (Vindication - Dynamite Eyes by Dynaformer). Motor City was able to come up the rail to grab a short advantage. But, coming to life was Shared Property. He zoomed on by for a four length win. Motor City was securely in second, 6 lengths in front of a closing Granite Harbor (Rockport Harbor - French Parfait by Native Prospector). Also finishing well was Alexander Thegreat (Cat Thief - Daddy's Petunia by Run Softly), who claimed the fourth spot. Shared Property is the 5th winner for Scat Daddy. Watch the Replay.

Winning With Grace

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Debuting Irish Exchange (Exchange Rate - Silver N Satin by Silver Deputy) was the heavy favorite, Filare l'Oro (Hard Spun - Elusive Gold by Strike the Gold) was 10-1. Inspeight (Speightstown - Shutterbug by Deputy Minister) acted up a bit during the load. Filare l'Oro stumbled at the break, and was at the back. Grace Hall (Empire Maker - Season's Greetings (IRE) by Ezzoud (IRE)) and Inspeight were battling up front. Irish Exchange made a move to get involved, as Inspeight dropped back. Grace Hall shook free, as Irish Exchange stalled. Annaclone (Flatter - Territory by Forty Niner) moved into second, but there was no catching Grace Hall, who won by three lengths. Annaclone was over 8 clear of the rest, with Christmas Trippi (Trippi - Christmas Gold by Slew o' Gold) closing to third, and Filare l'Oro picking up fourth. Watch the Replay.

Great job by Hard Not to Like, I was away camping all weekend and had no tv, computer or even cell phone service. It was very frustrating not to be able to keep up with a big weekend of racing or to satisfy my obsession with everything Hard Spun.

I watched the replay's as soon as I got home and wow, That Hard Not To Like is gorgeous isnt she ? A gray by Hard Spun, be still my heart !

Also, Barbaro's little brother Lentenor raced at Parx yesterday too. Missing that almost had me in tears, especially since he won.

Jason Shandler has been touting Coil for months, so, I played a $10 exacta box on Coil and Shackleford in the Haskell and damn if it didnt come in. I already thanked Jason on his page and it made a weekend from hell worth it.

Pollas, Pletcher? You mean the rich man's trainer. No disrespecting his ability but his numbers have a lot to do with the sheer volumn of horses in his barns. Who do you think is paying for all of those Armani suits ?

Personally, After the Life at Ten debacle, I would rather send my horses to Larry Jones, or Nick Zito.

Now, i'm going to put aloe on my sunburn, put cortizone all over my insect bites & poison ivy and soak my blistered heels in some cool water. AHH the great outdoors !

Criminal Type - It is really hard not to like Hard Not to Like (sorry for the bad pun). But, seriously, it's just so nice when they look so good pre-race, and run to their looks. She is a beauty.
