News and Notes

Freshman sire Stevie Wonderboy picked up his first winner Wednesday at Del Mar, when colt Sunny Superstition (Stevie Wonderboy - Profit System by Copelan) won the 8th race, a 5.5 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $32,000 - $28,000). Watch the Replay. Sunny Superstition was making his third start, having finished 3rd and 4th in 2 Hollywood Park starts. Read more about Sunny Superstition here.

Ribbon Taffy (Hard Spun - Partyship by Premiership) was scratched from the 3rd at Saratoga, but I recapped the race anyway (see below).

Xunlei Stays Composed for the Win

In addition to Ribbon Taffy, Spring Breeze (Congrats - Spring by Stravinsky), Reservation Blues (Indian Charlie - Gone for Christmas by Gone West), and Alydarla (Henny Hughes - Mamboalot by Kingmambo) were scratched. Alydarla will run Friday at Saratoga instead (see below). The track was fast, and Good Deed (Broken Vow - Hidden Assets by Mt. Livermore) was favored at 5-2. Also getting play were Xunlei (D'wildcat - Promenade Road by Dance Brightly) and Flashy in Pink (Flashy Bull - Laelia by Marquetry). Flashy in Pink looked good in the paddock, and Composition (Malibu Moon - St Lucinda by St. Jovite) caught my eye. The load was a bit of an adventure, both Good Deed and Xunlei were restless. Stay Composed shot out of the gate, and was soon several lengths in front. Xunlei, Composition, and Mi Vida (Distorted Humor - Crystal Current by A. P. Indy) took up the chase. Grace Like Rain (Stormy Atlantic - Graziella by Honour and Glory) missed the break, and gave the rest a head start. Stay Composed still had the lead in the stretch, but Xunlei was coming. She finally got by a weakening Stay Composed, and then drew off to win by 4. Stay Composed was clear in second, while a green Flashy in Pink captured third by a nose over Mi Vida. Grace Like Rain passed a few to take 5th, and Good Deed and Composition completed the field, both retreating after bumping each other. Interestingly, Xunlei was the only experienced runner left in the race. Watch the Replay.

The Winning Alumni

The track was fast. Florida Holiday (Harlan's Holiday - Leslie's Lady by Tricky Creek) was scratched, along with AE entrants Hertzel (Langfuhr - Wildcat Fan by Forest Wildcat) and My Newfound Saint (Newfoundland - So Saintly by Saint Ballado). This left Grand Procession (Songandaprayer - Procession by Private Terms), as the only entrant with experience. I thought he looked good. Circletherunway (Point Given - Varus by Vicar) took the early money, but Alumni (First Samurai - Exogenetic by Unbridled's Song) was favored at post time. Goingoingone (Corinthian - Clifton Bay by Gone West) was 9-1, and made a favorable impression on the track. I was also liking Mini Mine Mo (Giacomo - Mrs. P Minister by Proud Appeal). The New Bucketlist (Friends Lake - Foolininthemeadow by Meadow Prayer) outbroke everyone, but Alumni and Grand Procession were after him. Mini Mine Mo and Circletherunway bumped at the start. Goingoingone was sitting mid-pack. Alumni went by to take the lead. Grand Procession hung around for awhile, but then began to retreat. Sky Alert (First Samurai - Staff Nurse by Arch) moved into second, but he was no match for Alumni, who went on to win by 6 lengths, while equaling the track record for 5 furlongs. Sky Alert was safely second. Mini Mine Mo closed to take third by a neck over Goingoingone, who turned in a decent debut. Early favorite Circletherunway finished 8th. Watch the Replay.
