The Winning Tune
The track was sloppy, but all 8 ran. The Todd Pletcher-trained Angel's Tune (High Cotton - Holiday Tune by Concorde's Tune) was favored. Jonathan C (English Channel - Laurafina by Cozzene) was almost 40-1. He looked decent enough in the paddock, but filly Miss Pavarotti (Pavarotti - Missy McKee by Silver Deputy) was the one who caught my eye. Out on the track, I liked the way that Sound Effect (Rockport Harbor - Vickey's Echo by Clever Trick) was warming up. It was a good start, although Sound Effect was off a little slowly. Miss Pavarotti broke on top, but Angel's Tune did not let her get too far ahead. Jonathan C was in a good spot in third early, but he started to retreat after a half. At that point, Angel's Tune drew even with Miss Pavarotti, and began to take command. Flying late were Scotchnwater (Lunarpal - Heavy Waters by Meadowlake) and Sound Effect. They were a little too late to catch Angel's Tune, who scored by 3/4 lengths. Scotchnwater was a head better than Sound Effect, and Miss Pavarotti kept on in fourth. Jonathan C ended up 6th after his early involvement. Todd Pletcher also trains Machiavelique (Street Cry (IRE) - Arme Ancienne (GB) by Sillery), who finished last. Sound Effect is definitely one to keep an eye on, with his flying finish after a tardy start. Angel's Tune is the sixth winner for freshman sire High Cotton. Watch the Replay.
