Tripping To the Win

News and Notes

Keep an eye on Krissy Kat (Tale of the Cat - Kristy Beethoven by Kris S.), who was really motoring late to finish 4th in her debut in the 3rd at Saratoga on August 25. It definitely looks like she'll benefit from going farther than 5 furlongs. The winner was Alydarla (Henny Hughes - Mamboalot by Kingmambo) by an easy 5 lengths. Watch the Replay.

Tripping To the Win

The turf was yielding, but all 9 fillies stayed in. Backseat Romance (Action This Day - Parting Bid by Spectacular Bid) was favored. Both Tripping (Hard Spun - Mississippi Lights by Majestic Light) at 3-1, and Cherishd Obsession (Corinthian - Silver Wench by Silver Ghost) at 5-1, were respected. Flor Morena (Songandaprayer - Darling Katey by Marquetry) looked good at first glance. Cherishd Obsession is a striking gray, and she looked ready for action. Tripping made a good impression, I was hoping for a more relaxed attempt, after being rank last out. Backseat Romance warmed up nicely. Cherishd Obsession needed a little push in the gate, but nothing too drastic. Markree Breeze (Shore Breeze - Markree Castle by Holy Bull) broke on top, and both Tripping and Cherishd Obsession were off well. Markree Breeze sprinted away from the field by several lengths, but Tripping was relaxed, tracking in second. Tripping made her move, and hit the front. Cherishd Obsession was coming as well. Tripping pulled away for a 2 1/2 length victory. Cherishd Obsession couldn't catch Tripping, but she was more than 3 in front of the rest, which were led by 54-1 first-timer Purple Barbie (Flatter - Darmane by Mane Minister). The Maiden Watch exacta paid $50.80. Tripping is the 10th winner for Hard Spun. Watch the Replay.

A Political Triumph

Natalie Jane (Ecclesiastic - Crafty Melody by Crafty Prospector) was scratched, allowing AE Kristina Stella (Grand Slam - Icy Minister by Deputy Minister) to run. The other AEs stayed out. Stormin Miki (Forest Wildcat - Miki's Melody by Aptitude) was the heavy favorite, Zelmane (Corinthian - Wander Queen by Kingmambo) was dismissed at 84-1. I liked first-timer Political Diva (Political Force - Try Lea by Marquetry) on the track. Debuting Love and Run (Bob and John - Love Trick by Mazel Trick) flipped behind the gate, causing a bit of a delay. The start was pretty fair. There was a big scramble for the lead, with Political Diva, Stomin Miki, and Kristina Stella all involved. Kristina Stella grabbed the lead, but Political Diva was still there, as Stormin Miki dropped back. Political Diva and Kritstina Stella continued to battle, with Political Diva finishing best to win by 1/2 length. Closing well was Acallforjoe (El Nino - Acallabove by Great Above), who took third by a neck over Amazon Queen (Olmodavor - Alpha Amazon by Wild Rush). Zelmane finished 5th, 3 spots better than favorite Stormn Miki. Political Diva is the 6th winner for Political Force. Watch the Replay.

Evita's Winning Crown

Only the AEs were scratched. Kvell (More Than Ready - My Catriona by Tactical Cat) was favored, and English Puddin (English Channel - Go for Puddin by Go for Gin) was 15-1. She looked good, but I wasn't sure if 5.5 furlongs would be far enough. Lady Aragorn (Aragorn (IRE) - Young Royalty by Royal Academy) looked good in the paddock. On the track, I was liking California Roll (Bob and John - Gram's Beauty by Forest Wildcat) and Evita's Crown (Matty G - Crowning Camilla by Formal Dinner). Jockey Hector Berrios was injured at the gate, and his horse, English Puddin, was unloaded and scratched. The rest of the horses were unloaded, and there was a short delay. They loaded up again, and Evita Crown hopped at the start, and was near the back. Love My Girl (El Corredor - Lantern Glow by Mineshaft) was on top, with Believe Me (Primary Suspect - Pawnee Patti by Sir Richard Lewis) right with her. Just off of these were Warren's Mad Dawg (Ancient Art - My Kitty Cat by Tale of the Cat) and Tony's Pinquini's (Gimmeawink - Dearest Place by Out of Place). Love My Girl and Believe Me continued to show the way, but Kvell and Evita's Crown were both coming. The finished together on the wire. The photo was examined for a long time, before Evita's Crown was declared the winner by a nose. It was close for the minor awards as well, with Believe Me a nose better than California Roll, who was a neck in front of Love My Girl. Watch the Replay.

Allowance Entry

Hard Not to Like (filly; Hard Spun - Like a Gem by Tactical Cat), who broke her maiden impressively first time out at 6 furlongs on the Woodbine turf on July 30, returns in a mile allowance on that surface. She is the only filly in the race, carded as race 4. I'm not worrried about the boys, but the weather might be a factor, as it has been raining a lot recently at Woodbine. Hopefully, this race will stay on the turf. Post time is 3:35 PM ET, and Hard Not to Like will break from post 6. She is the first foal out of Like a Gem, a stakes winner on the turf and dirt. Like a Gem was a winner at 2, and also stakes-placed that season, and earned $554,216 in her career. Like a Gem is a half sister to 3 winners, including stakes winner Win and Reign, and grade III stakes-placed Cool Gator, who was stakes-placed on the turf.
