Optimizer (English Channel - Indy Pick by A. P. Indy) finished second in the With Anticipation Stakes (gr. IIT) on the turf at Saratoga, just couldn't catch State of Play (War Front - Valeta by Procida), who led the whole way. Robby Albarado, jockey for Optimizer, did lose his whip, but that probably did not cost him the victory. Still, a very good run for Optimizer, who is now grade II stakes-placed, with earnings of $60,600. He is the second stakes-placed runner for his sire, joining Channel Quest, second in the Continental Mile. Knock Rock (Corinthian - Lady Cozzette by Cozzene) was running well late to finish fourth. I thought this was a good attempt for him, especially as it seemed like he was really fighting with Rajiv Maragh early. Captain Webb (English Channel - Miss Mary Pat by Service Stripe) finished 6th as the favorite. He had traffic troubles early on, and was also a bit rank. Hopefully, he learned something, as this was only his second start. Watch the Replay. Read more about the With Anticipation here.

A Feather in Heather's Cap

Weekend Wish (Bluegrass Cat - Extraordinary Lady by Charismatic) was scratched, leaving 10, including the entry of Gattino (Kitten's Joy - Itsallaboutamanda by Thunder Gulch) and Wesley's Aunts (Montbrook - Catch the Ghost by Silver Ghost). The track was fast. Bettors had trouble settling on a favorite in this one. Heather's Feather (Dixie Union - Santa Rosa Island by Valiant Nature) took the early money, but Star Vesta (Master Command - Star in the Corner by Holy Bull) was the choice at post time. Four horses went off at under 4-1, including Street Surprise (Street Sense - Sleepoverwithgreer by A.P. Indy). Star Vesta looked good at first glance, and Gattino was showing some spunk. Longshot My Viva Loca (Chapter One - Sassy Sails by Captain Bodgit) was on her toes. Street Surprise made a good impression on the track. But, she broke slowly, and was then bumped soundly. Star Vesta went to the lead, with Wesley's Aunts, Purses Galore (Successful Appeal - Evening Stroll by Johannesburg), and Heather's Feather sticking close. Street Sense was rushed up to join the fray. Star Vesta, Heather's Feather, and Purses Galore began to separate from the others. They finished in a line, with Heather's Feather 3/4 length in front of Purses Galore, who had her neck in front of Star Vesta. It was 8 lengths back to Lindyhop (Rockport Harbor - Jazzitup by Dixieland Band) in fourth. Street Surprised ended up fifth, not bad considering her start and subsequent rush to get involved. Interestingly, the four experienced horses finished 1st, 2nd, and last and second to last. Watch the Replay.

A Sweet Win

The MTOs were scratched, including Thisizsparta (Corinthian - Deputy Sue by Lotareason) and Aubby K (Street Sense - Lilly Capote by Capote), and the turf was firm. Dorothy's Spirit (Scat Daddy - Im Out First by Allen's Prospect) took the early money, but Sweet Cat (Kitten's Joy - Claire's Smile by Carson City) was favored at post time. Inny Minnie (Hard Spun - Inny River by Seattle Slew) was a couple ticks under 4-1. I liked the look of Run a Risk (Distorted Humor - Commodities by Private Account) and Composition (Malibu Moon - St Lucinda by St. Jovite), as well as Inny Minnie. Inny Minnie and Rock On Home (Rock Hard Ten - Escape From Home by Came Home) battled early, with Sweet Cat and Run a Risk watching the duel in 3rd and 4th. Inny Minnie finally shook free from Rock On Home, but Sweet Cat was getting in gear. She rolled on by for a 2 length win. Inny Minnie held second over Run a Risk, and Rock On Home tired to 4th. Watch the Replay. This win was an historic one for John Velazquez, as it was his 650th at Saratoga. That number puts him in second-place all time behind Jerry Bailey. Me and My Gals a Winner

All nine ran on the fast track. The entry of Cars and Trucks (Tale of the Cat - Mia Bella by Rahy) and Me and My Gals (Sky Mesa - Kisses for My Gal by Unbridled) was favored. English Code (English Channel - Mystery Code by Lost Code) was 38-1. Me and My Gals broke running, Global Empire (Fusaichi Pegasus - North Cork by Doneraile Court) stumbled at the break, but recovered to go after Me and My Gals. English Code was not far off. Me and My Gal and Global Empire continued 1-2, but Me and My Gal began to pull away. He really poured it on in the stretch, crossing the line 8 1/4 lengths in front. Global Empire continued on to take second, more than 4 in front of the others, who were led by Atlantic Titan (Stormy Atlantic - Lokoya by Woodman). English Code ended up 9th (last) after his early involvement. Watch the Replay.

Nice front running win by State of Play. I've been watching for Heathers Feather. She did well getting up in time to win. Ive always liked Dixie Union. It is sad to think that there wont be many more of them. What a shame to lose him so young, particularly now with Union Rags making quite a name for himself.

I know I asked you what you thought of him and that you wanted to see him on a dry track.  So, I went back and watched his maiden win on a dry track at Delaware Park on July 12, right after Filare L'oro raced and he looked pretty freaking good blowing by the leader in the stretch. Now I want to see him go further. Also, The pic's of him I saw in the barn at Fair Hill were great. I know this is gonna sound weird, and I don't care if you call me crazy, but I sware his body stucture reminded me of Barbaro. It was like deja vu with a big white face and socks.

The Hard Spun colt, Slinger, I been waiting for him too. His second dam is a half sister to Bedazzle, Street Sense's dam.

Love the name "Istanbully" it made me chuckle.

The rails in heaven are being graced by Beautiful Pleasure and Point Guard. Hats off to two beautiful racehorses. As for Point Guard (Afleet Alex) little Alex Scott is petting his mane right now and the morning fog on the track at Del Mar will seem empty.

I liked State of Play after I saw his maiden win - I think I even said something about him on this blog - I am not at all surprised that he won yesterday. I am also looking forward to Hard not to like's next race.
