Winning Hard Nosed

News and Notes

Unfortunately, I did not have time to preview all the Sunday races, as sleep took preference. I have previewed three races, and for the other three I have given information on the Maiden Watch horses, but not the others in the race. I also have not listed workouts. However, I did want to note that Artest (Hard Spun - Desire to Excel by Mt. Livermore), who was a debut winner on June 10, is back on the worktab. He went 3 furlongs in :38.00 at the RQHS Mile on September 3.

Winning Hard Nosed

All 11 ran, including the entry of Dustin' the Rest (High Cotton - Dusty Sparkle by Dusty Screen) and Maji Warrior (Desert Warrior - Homah Ling Ling by Polish Pro), and Hard Nosed (Hard Spun - Katy Kat by Forest Wildcat) and Elexagente (Medaglia d'Oro - Heavenly Times by Relaunch). The latter entry was made the heavy favorite. Hard Nosed was getting blinkers off, and looked ready. Mighty One (Macho Uno - Behrnik by Chimes Band) made a good impression, and Friends Rule (Peace Rules - Tensas Friend by Crafty Friend) looked good. Dustin' the Rest was a little on edge. Hard Nosed was sent to the lead early, and was soon several lengths clear. His closest pursuer was Mighty One. These two continued to show the way, with a gap back to third in the form of Gimmeonemore (Gimmeawink - Jackie B by Defrere). Mighty One made a dent in Hard Nosed's lead late, but it was too little too late, as Hard Nosed won fairly easily, by 1 1/2 lengths. Mighty One held second by 2 1/2 lengths. Going well late was Friends Rule, who picked up third. Hard Nosed is winner number 12 for Hard Spun.

The Kid Comes Through

Only the AEs and the MTO were scratched, and the turf was firm. Da Vinci (A.P. Indy - Friendly Michelle by Artax), the $600,000 yearling, was favored. He certainly is a beauty. Winston C (Corinthian - The Happy Hopper by El Prado (IRE)) was 7-1, and Corinthian's Jewel (Corinthian - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley) was 32-1. O'Prado Again (El Prado (IRE) - Leh She Run by Pulpit) was getting a little wild in the paddock, and was frisky on the track. Winston C looked good warming up. He went for the lead at the break. Chasing him was Super Saturday (Any Given Saturday - Lady Aloma by Cozzene), with Ur (Giant's Causeway - Sue's Last Dance by Forty Niner) and Kitten's Kid (Kitten's Joy - Madame Du Lac by Lemon Drop Kid) not far off. Corinthian's Jewel was not too far back, but he was wide, having broken from the 12 hole. Winston C continued to lead, with Super Saturday as his shadow, but he began to tire late. Comiing on were Kitten's Kid, Ur, and from the back of the pack Punctual Jeff (More Than Ready - Floating Island by A.P. Indy). It was Kitten's Kid, who came between horses for the victory by a neck over Punctual Jeff, whose nose was in front of Ur. Super Saturday settled for fourth, and Winston C tired to 5th. He was followed by Corinthian's Jewel, who definitely was compromised by his wide journey. Interesting in a race with 7 horses that sold for 6 figures, it was the $6,000 yearling who took the win. Watch the Replay.

Alpha Is First

Ten ran, including the entry of Alpha (Bernardini - Munnaya by Nijinsky II) and Nandino (Street Cry (IRE) - Mama Nadine by A.P. Indy). Africanist (Johannesburg - Mekko Hokte by Holy Bull), second behind Currency Swap on August 6, was favored. Hierro (Hard Spun - Brief Bliss by Navarone) was respected at 4-1. He was quite vocal in the paddock, but looked good. I was a little bit attracted to longshot Timely Tally (Mr. Greeley - Score by A.P. Indy). However, I couldn't fault the favorite on looks. Both halves of the entry also looked good. The start was fairly decent, but Hierro was out slowly. Little Wyatt (Rockport Harbor - Open Minded by Wharf) sprinted to the lead, and was soon multiple lengths in front. There was a tight pack chasing him, led by Go West (Tiznow - Cimarron Forest by Forestry), Nandino, Alpha. Little Wyatt continued to lead, setting some quick fractions, :22.59, :45.27. The pack began to catch Little Wyatt, with Alpha leading the charge. Hierro was starting to come to life too. Alpha rolled to the lead, and left the others behind. He went on to post a 6 length win. Closing well for second was Invocation (Pulpit - Missamerica Bertie by Quiet American), and favorite Africanist claimed third. Hierro was hampered by traffic problems, and ended up fifth. Interestingly, the other half of the entry, Nandino, finished last. Watch the Replay.

Other Maiden Result

Abhaath (colt; Hard Spun - Above Perfection by In Excess (IRE)) finished 11th in his 7 furlong maiden race at Thirsk. He was at the front early, but weakened at the end.

Other Results

Kunooz (filly; Hard Spun - Aviacion (BRZ) by Know Heights (IRE)) finished second in the 1 mile Carraig Insurance Hyperion Fillies' Conditions Stakes at Ascot. She seemed in a good spot to get the win, but Kieren Fallon made a mad dash with Falls of Lora (Street Cry (IRE) - Firth of Lorne (IRE) by Danehill), apparently catching the other jockeys off-guard, and won easily.

Mabroor (colt; Hard Spun - Mayfield by Exploit) finished 6th in the 6 furlong Betfred 1350 Shops Nationwide Nursery at Haydock. He was stalking early, and then weakened in the later stages.

Sorry!  That automatic-word fill-in thingie picked Klinger's home town instead of "to keep"' so here's what I meant:

"Might be interesting to keep tabs on"

(I am presuming that everyone knows who Klinger is ... At least it was during the time of colour TV and not black and white)

I think of Klinger in black and white, as we didn't have a color tv.
