Prince Raphael Gets the Crown

The race was taken off the turf, and run at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack. Toasting Mia (Exchange Rate - Ruby Martini by Rubiano) and Afleet Trini (Afleet Alex - Heaven's Symphony by Maria's Mon) were scratched from the main field, as well as AE entrants Dead On (Awesome Again - Split the Arrow by Smart Strike) and Hurry Up Alan (Southern Image - Summer Trip by Trippi). Saturday Classic (Any Given Saturday - Classic Approval by With Approval) was favored, Wicked Hard (Hard Spun - Pennant Winner by Crafty Prospector) was 32-1. Prince Raphael (Shakespeare - Yankee Town by Cape Town) looked good in the paddock, Saturday Classic had some spring in his step, and Wicked Hard made a good impression. Designator (Silver Train - Designing Miss by Notebook) kept catching my eye on the track. Malibu Tide (Malibu Moon - Hello Lucky by Lucky Lionel) encountered some trouble getting to the track, requiring a jockey change. He was delayed coming out, and the race was delayed a few minutes. First-timer I Cat (Bluegrass Cat - Talullah by Twining) acted up at the load. Designator broke running, going to the front. Exchange Can Rate (Exchange Rate - Interruption by Conquistador Cielo), Saturday Classic, and Wicked Hard were up close. Designator continued to lead with Exhange Can Rate chasing, but then Prince Raphael came up the rail and went on by. He opened up, winning by 6 3/4 lengths. Malibu Tide outfinished Exchange Can Rate for second, and Stormy Revenge (Stormy Atlantic - Firebaby by Marquetry) rallied for fourth. Wicked Hard finished 11th (last) after his early activity. A Gem of a Win

Eleven ran on the Polytrack. Favoritism volleyed between Gemologist (Tiznow - Crystal Shard by Mr. Prospector) and Thomas Jefferson (Mr. Greeley - Milago by Danzig), with Gemologist the 2-1 choice at post time. Photon (Invasor (ARG) - Lady Bertrando by Bertrando) was respected at 5-1. As they came on to the track, Mr Supernova (Aldebaran - Memory Work by Synastry) dumped his rider and was loose. He was soon apprehended. Ninja Cat (First Samurai - Senora Cat by Cozzene) made a favorable appearance on the track, and Photon is a good looker. Ninja Cat unseated his rider during the load. Gemologist broke on top, pursued by Fifty Five South (Cuvee - Greyciousness by Miswaki). Also up close were Zoom Zoom Zap (Noble Causeway - Mil Kilates by Gold Alert) and Ninja Cat. Photon was near the back early. Fifty Five South moved even with Gemologist, as Thomas Jefferson began to get involved. Gemologist shook off the challenge from Fifty Five South, and pulled away for a 5 length win. Fifty Five South held second, over a closing Got Zip (City Zip - Got Pizazz by Lion Cavern). Thomas Jefferson weakened to fourth, and Photon passed some to finish fifth. Mr Supernova hit the gate and was eased. Watch the Replay.
