Seaside Magic (filly; Hard Spun - Enduring Will by Arch) chased the early pace in the Brandywine Stakes at Parx Racing, but faded and finished 6th (last). The winner was favorite Say a Novena (Songandaprayer - Rabiadella by Dynaformer), by an easy 6 1/2 lengths. Watch the Replay.

Glinda the Good (Hard Spun - Magical Flash by Miswaki) took the early lead in the Blue Hen Stakes at Delaware Park, and battled with favorite Grace Hall (Empire Maker - Season's Greetings (IRE) by Ezzoud (IRE)) into the stretch, but she was no match for that filly late. Grace Hall, who had previously won the Spinaway (gr. I) at Saratoga, took the Blue Hen by 5 3/4 lengths. Glinda the Good held 2nd, and Filare l'Oro (Hard Spun - Elusive Gold by Strike the Gold) made her usual run to finish fourth, just missing third. Watch the Replay.

Invasor Girl (filly; Invasor (ARG) - Millenia (GB) by Unfuwain) led through the early stages of her 7 furlong contest run on good to firm turf at Redcar, but faded and finished 10th. The winner was the gelding Right Divine (IRE) (Verglas (IRE) - Yellow Trumpet (GB) by Petong (GB)). Watch the Replay. Note how the announcer says Invasor Girl, which sounds like Invazer. First time through, I didn't think he gave our girl a call.

Indy Sea Indy Winner's Circle

The race was taken off the turf, and run at a mile on the muddy main track. Two Months Rent (Purim - Sharp Tradition by Sharpen Up (GB)), Dentrite (Rockport Harbor - Tustin by Conquistador Cielo), and Fly Ride (Street Cry (IRE) - Gran Senorita by El Gran Senor) were scratched. All three MTOs, Trumpet Man (Lawyer Ron - Singing Year by Half a Year), Lure of the South (Southern Image - Concolour by Our Native), and Light of Truth (Birdstone - Buckles and Kinks by Waquoit), got to run. The bettors had some trouble deciding on a favorite. Ur (Giant's Causeway - Sue's Last Dance by Forty Niner) took the early money, but Silver Max (Badge of Silver - Kissin Rene by Kissin Kris) was the slight choice at post time, with Trumpet Man also getting play. Nile Runner (Corinthian - Golden Tiy by Dixieland Band) was 30-1. Never On Time (Any Given Saturday - Past Due by Devil His Due) looked good, Nile Runner made a decent appearance, and Trumpet Man got a nice warmup. Balance the Budget (Bellamy Road - Every Day Is Good by El Corredor) stumbled at the break, and was at the back. Nile Runner hit the gate, and had a couple beat. Silver Max went to the front, with Never On Time and Trumpet Man after him. Also near the front was Indy Sea (Johannesburg - A. B. Prospect by A.P. Indy). In the stretch it was down to Silver Max and Indy Sea, as they separated from the others. Indy Sea wore down Silver Max late for a 1 3/4 length victory. It was a long way, more than 8 lengths, back to Light of Truth in third, and Nile Runner was picking up spots at the end to take fourth. Watch the Replay.

Souper Speedy to Win

Teeth of the Dog (Bluegrass Cat - Deputy Reality by Deputy Minister) was scratched, leaving 7 to run in the mud. Love to Run (Pulpit - I Love America by Quiet American) was favored, with How Do I Win (Corinthian - Silver Crown by Distorted Humor) just a couple of ticks higher, and Hierro (Hard Spun - Brief Bliss by Navarone) just under 4-1. How Do I Win look good, and Penn's Grant (Empire Maker - Mystery Itself by Pulpit) made a favorable appearance on the track. I thought Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie - Speed Succeeds by Gone West) was kind of interesting, although I may have been influenced by his name, which was perfect for the day. He seemed a little awkward at the break, but went up to join How Do I Win on the lead. How Do I Win began to drop back after a half, but Souper Speedy was still there. He was joined by Love to Run and Hierro, who was moving on the outside. Hierro was gaining, but Souper Speedy held firm to win by 3/4 length. Hierro was a clear second over Love to Run, with Penn's Grant claiming fourth. How Do I Win ended up 6th. Speed and fade is beginning to become a familiar refrain with him. He may need a change in tactics. Watch the Replay.

The Winning Action

The race was taken off of the turf, and run at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack. English Crossing (English Channel - Lady Solvig by Giant's Causeway) was scratched, along with Holy Wine (Holy Bull - Flows Like Wine by Mt. Livermore), Motlawa Blues (Langfuhr - Niceling by Maria's Mon), Almira Fawn (E Dubai - New Dimension by Golden Missile), Kiss in the Forest (Forest Wildcat - Hummingbird Kiss by Smart Strike), and Mekong Delta (Stormy Atlantic - South Sea Blues by Cure the Blues). Holy Wine, Almira Fawn, and Mekong Delta are entered Sunday at Woodbine (see below). Cheerful Heart (Corinthian - Glacken's Mark by Smoke Glacken) drew in off the AE list, and was favored at post time. Queen of the Waves (English Channel - Clearly a Queen by Lucky North) was 11-1. I liked Promiscuous (Yes It's True - Belicia by Unbridled's Song) on the track, but Cheerful Heart was looking good too. Queen of the Waves broke slowly. Cheerful Heart broke running, but dropped back. Going for the lead were Promiscuous, Woollahra (Proud Citizen - Woolloomooloo by Regal Intention), Cairdeas (Silver Deputy - Future Equity by Steady Growth), and Gatineau (Northern Afleet - Indivia by Tiznow). Promiscuous stuck her head out in front, but she had plenty of company. The lead changed hands a few times, but Promiscuous stayed involved. Making a move from the back of the pack on the outside was Cheerful Heart. But making a more menacing move on the inside was Actionontwo (Artie Schiller - Devil's Fling by Devil's Bag), who rolled on by. The Arkansas-bred went on to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Promiscuous held second over Cheerful Heart, and Flora (Mr. Greeley - Swap Fliparoo by Exchange Rate) closed to fourth. Queen of the Waves ended up 7th after her slow beginning. Watch the Replay.

Coach Sickie Scores

The track was fast, and all nine ran. Blueskiesnrainbows (English Channel - Cho Cho San by Deputy Minister) was the lukewarm 3-1 favorite. Also taking some play was the only experienced entrant Patriotic Lion (Lion Heart - Patriotic Diva by Honour and Glory). I kind of liked Sir Newcastle (Sir Shackleton - Humorous Venture by Distorted Humor) in the paddock, and Blueskiesnrainbows warmed up well. On HRTV, Gary Stevens remarked that he thought that Blueskiesnrainbows seemed a little too quiet. Patriotic Lion broke best, but Coach Sickie (Henny Hughes - Dixie Holiday by Dixieland Band) and Blueskiesnrainbows were up there too. Blueskiesnrainbows went after Patriotic Lion. These two dueled for a time, leaving the others behind. Patriotic Lion took a short lead, but Coach Sickie came by on the outside and left them both behind. He went on to win by 5 1/4 lengths. Patriotic Lion held second over Sir Newcastle and Final Vindication (Vindication - Ilona by Pirate's Bounty). Blueskiesnrainbows tired to 6th, but not a bad debut. Watch the Replay.

The winner of the With Anticipation, State of Play, is also in the Pilgrim, although there are grumblings that he might be scratched. Captain Webb was a winner in his only other start, a 1 1/16 mile contest over good turf at Saratoga on July 30. That was the race where he bolted to the outside rail on the turn. Most recently, he ran in a 1 1/16 mile maiden race at Belmont Park on September 18, finishing 3rd.
