Cushing the Obsession

The race was run on the good turf, and only the AEs Gimme the Crown (Medaglia d'Oro - Valid Tenet by Valid Appeal) and Sharp Exchange (Exchange Rate - Music Way by Kris S.) were scratched. Thecushmaker (Repent - Pincher Creek by Storm Creek) opened as the tepid choice, but Cherishd Obsession (Corinthian - Silver Wench by Silver Ghost) was the favorite at post time. She looked ready for action, as usual. Debuting Asian Joy (Kitten's Joy - Glasgow by Menifee) looked good, and attracted some early attention from the bettors. Cherishd Obsession broke on top, and held a brief lead. But first-timer Cherry Point (Point Given - Cerise by Rahy) was rushed up after beginning slowly, and went by Cherishd Obsession to set the pace. Cherishd Obsession was not far off on the inside. Thecushmaker was following her in third. Cherishd Obsession went by Cherry Point after 6 furlongs, as that filly was moving awkwardly, and retreated to the back. Cherishsd Obsession established a clear lead, but Thecushmaker continued to track. She wore down Cherishd Obsession, and went on to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Cherishd Obsession was 2 lengths clear of the others, with Shesabronxbomber (Afleet Alex - Beppin by Forest Wildcat), Italian Rose (Forestry - Extend by Unbridled's Song), and Sugar Street (Fusaichi Pegasus - Quinn by Theatrical (IRE)) finishing together in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Cherishd Obsession has now run three times, and finishing second three times, with earnings of $17,902. Watch the Replay.

The Winning Coalition

All nine ran on the muddy track. Hope Still Springs (Corinthian - Restored Hope by He's Bad) was the heavy favorite. He reared at the load, and was then restless in the gate. There was a battle for the early lead, involving Sonnyandpally (City Zip - Riotous Miss by Brief Ruckus), Down Broadway (Grand Slam - Morning Sun by Dehere) and Coalition (Patriot Act - Promises Promises by Dixie Union). Hope Still Springs was in a good spot, watching this action. Sonnyandpally was the first to give in amongst the top three. Coalition and Down Broadway continue to tussel for a time, but then Coalition pulled away, and went on to score a 4 3/4 length victory. Down Broadway held second over debuting Live for Today (Mineshaft - Zip by Danzig), who closed stoutly for third. Hope Still Springs stalled in fourth. Coalition is the second winner for freshman sire Patriot Act. Watch the Replay.
