An Affordable Win

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Afford (Street Sense - Unaffordable by Unbridled) took most of the attention from the bettors, going off less than even money. He looked the part. Longshot He's Got to Run (Spanish Steps - Nubbins by Storm Cat) kept catching my eye in the paddock. On the track, I liked Alert Warrior (Cherokee Run - Mountain Kitten by Mountain Cat), in addtion to Afford. First-timer Rojo Cielo (Taste of Paradise - Musica by Sultry Song) was left at the break. The others were off well, with Proud Jackson (Proud Citizen - Sweet Lexy May by Danzig) claiming the lead. He was chased by Totee (Forest Danger - Too Cute to Boot by Pulpit). Afford was in a good position early, just off the pace in third. Afford made his move on the inside, and grabbed the lead. Bet Seattle (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Second Bet by Belong to Me) was moving too. He took second, but he was no match for Afford, who pulled away for a 7 1/4 length victory. Bet Seattle held second over Becknerville (Unbridled Energy - High Caste by Indian Charlie), who was going well late for a very productive debut. It's a family affair for Jim Tafel, who bred and races Afford, as he also bred sire Street Sense and dam Unaffordable. Afford is winner number 9 for Street Sense. Watch the Replay.

Gold Megillah Wins the Fight

As predicted, this one was taken off of the turf, and run at 1 1/16 miles on the sloppy main track. Speightful Ways (Speightstown - Fantastic Ways by Secretariat), Mambo Boom (Black Mambo - Queen Kaboom by Sword Dance (IRE)), Oak Harbor (Bernstein - Orient Pearl by Manila), Tanteo (Tactical Cat - Bella Luna by Royal Academy), and Travel Advisory (Stormy Atlantic - Fire of Freedom by Street Cry (IRE)) were scratched. AE entrant Finnegans Wake (Powerscourt (GB) - Boat's Ghost by Silver Ghost) got in to make his debut. Gold Megillah (Purim - Touch Me Once by Touch Gold) was the 5-2 favorite, Street Fight (Street Sense - Reportedly by Silver Deputy) was 8-1. He looked ready. My Silver Bear (Mizzen Mast - Rocajul by Abel Prospect) was an eye-catcher in the paddock. Onceinmylifetime (Kitalpha - Champagne Royal by Jeblar) looked good in the post parade. Finnegans Wake was off slowly. Street Fight went for the lead, and got it, but he had company from My Silver Bear and Bravo Habibi (Stormy Atlantic - Princess Sequoia by Cherokee Run). Street Fight continued to lead, with My Silver Bear pressing. But Gold Megillah was looming on the outside. He took the lead, and cruised to the win. It was 18 1/2 lengths back to second, where My Silver Bear finally got the best of Street Fight, who had to settle for third. Making up a little ground late was Sharp Daddy (Scat Daddy - Refinement by Seattle Slew), who took fourth. Gold Megillah is the 4th winner for Purim. Watch the Replay.

A Cozy Victory

As with the 5th race, this one was taken off of the turf and run at a mile and a sixteenth on a sloppy main track. AE entrant Manx (English Channel - Supreme Council by Rahy) drew into the race, as N. B. A. Money (Mr. Greeley - Mayo On the Side by French Deputy), On Stirling Bridge (Dynaformer - Kanerrerr by Danzig), Southern Joy (Catienus - Peaceful Splendor by Honour and Glory), Exothermic (Empire Maker - Irridescence (SAF) by Caesour), and Saturday Classic (Any Given Saturday - Classic Approval by With Approval) were scratched from the main field. Also scratched were AEs Patriotic Dream (Patriot Act - All My Dreams by Manlove) and Klipit (Smarty Jones - Free Ransom by Our Native). In addition to Manx, AE entrant Paulistano (Event of the Year - Maemy (BRZ) by Punk (ARG)) was in. Cozzetti (Cozzene - Lemon Drop Cello by Lemon Drop Kid) was the heavy favorite, going off at 3-5 at post time. Manx was 13-1, but he looked very good, best that I've seen him. I liked Purincat (Purim - Herecomesacat by Storm Creek) and Paulistano on the track. Manx reared at start, and that probably cost him any chance. On the lead was Purincat, with Cozzetti tracking. Also close were Optionality (More Than Ready - Trippi Street by Trippi) and Major Hope (Lemon Drop Kid - Double Major by Bertrando). Cozzetti got by Purincat after 6 furlongs. There was a bit of bumping, but he pulled free for an easy 5 length win. Optionality claimed second over Major Hope, while Purincat tired to fourth. Manx had to settle for fifth after his trouble at the start. Out of the also-rans, I will definitely bet Purincat next time out. Watch the Replay.
