Almusafa Takes the Race
Mo Fuzzy Cat (Tale of the Cat - Gulch Girl by Gulch) was the only scratch, and the race was run on good turf. Race Palace (Corinthian - Southern Swing by Dixieland Band) was favored based on her second-place finish on November 9. She looked good in the prelims. Witch Way North (North Light (IRE) - Witch Tradition by Holy Bull) sprinted to the lead, with Hanalei (Bob and John - Bates Choice by Bates Motel) her closest pursuer. Race Palace was not far off on the outside. Market Princess (After Market - Noble Idea by Deputy Minister) and Warrior Prinzessa (Pleasantly Perfect - Well Done My Love (GER)) were at the back. Witch Way North continued to lead. Race Palace made a move to get into contention. But, making a better move on the inside was Almusafa, the only debut runner in the field, and she pulled away for a 2 length win. With Way North held second, and it was more than 3 lengths back to Race Palace in third. Watch the Replay.

This race was originally scheduled for the turf, but it was announced on November 29 that Laurel will have no more turf racing this year. Hard Drive (Hard Spun - Indy Flash by A.P. Indy) has run twice, finishing 6th at 5.5 furlongs on October 20, and 11th at 6 furlongs on November 24. Both of those starts were on the dirt at Laurel. He didn't show much in either outing, and they may have been hoping that the turf would wake him up. So, it will be interesting to see if he stays in, now that the surface has changed. Hard Drive is a half brother to 4 winners, including grade III stakes-placed Khalia, and stakes winner Galloping Gal. Galloping Gal won 3 races at 2, including the Jessamine County Stakes. Overall, she won $348,269. Indy Flash, dam of Hard Drive, is a half sister to 6 winners, including stakes winner Bright Asset, and grade III winner Bright Again. Hard Spun's 67 runners have made 177 total starts, recording 31 wins, 27 seconds, 21 thirds, and $1,583,113 in earnings.
Senor Quickie (Scipion - Expensive Fun by Senor Speedy) and Esson (Afleet Alex - Cheerful by Dixieland Band) finished 5th and 6th in a mile race on a muddy track at Parx on October 30, behind the Corinthian 2-year-old Nile Runner. He is by first-year sire Scipion, whose 15 runners have made 60 total starts, recording 10 wins, 5 seconds, 12 thirds, and $203,695 in earnings. Senor Quickie is out of the winning mare Expensive Fun, who is out of the winning mare Fun Prospect. Esson previously finished 4th in a 6 furlong dirt race at Parx on October 4. He sold for $13,000 as a 2-year-old, and is the second foal out of the placed mare Cheerful, whose first foal is the winner Powerman.
