Afford (Street Sense - Unaffordable by Unbridled) went right for the lead in the Sugar Bowl Stakes at Fair Grounds, battling with Brown Eyed Jozi (Johannesburg - Brown Eyed Beauty by Miswaki). He put away that rival, but had no answer for Exfactor (Exchange Rate - Bright Magic by Prized) and Laurie's Rocket (Bluegrass Cat - Clay's Rocket by American Chance), who both went by. Those two dueled to the wire, with Exfactor getting the win by a nose. Afford had to settle for third, but he can now add stakes-placed to his resume. Watch the Replay.

A Flame Run

Trans Continental (E Dubai - Plucky Broad by Holy Bull) was scratched, leaving 11 on the fast track. First-timer Miss Lorena (Gold Legend - Rockin Regent by Gold Regent) took some early action, but Please Be Discreet (Discreet Cat - Box of Joy by Concerto) was favored at post time. Flame Run (Hard Spun - Swept Away by Mystery Storm) was 11-1. Please Be Discreet looked best to me in the post parade, but Flame Run and Play Soleil (Latent Heat - Prevention by Aptitude) caught my eye as well. The start was good for all except Lady Diva Ga Ga (Exchange Rate - Boxer Girl by Two Punch), who was left at the gate and trailed. Play Soleil had a brief lead, but Flame Run went by her to set the pace. Please Be Discreet was not far off. Flame Run continued to show the way, and there was no catching her, as she went on to post a 3 3/4 length win. Please Be Discreet was securely in second, and Play Soleil just held off debuting Urbanini (Bernardini - Urbane by Citidancer). Also going well late was Lady Diva Ga Ga, who recovered from her bad start to take 5th. Flame Run is the 26th win for Hard Spun. Watch the Replay.

Displaying Radiant Talent

All thirteen ran on the fast track. Radiant Talent (Johannesburg - Dignified Diva by Meadowlake) was the tepid choice early on, but took more action as post time approached. Street Fight (Street Sense - Reportedly by Silver Deputy) was 72-1. This was a very nice looking field. To me, Celebrity Jack (Roman Ruler - Aly McBell by Danzig) looked best, but also liked Stinger Joe (Mr. Greeley - Andujar by Quiet American), Street Fight, and Speargun (Badge of Silver - Woodland Sprite by Woodman). The start was good. Notmyfirstime (Scat Daddy - Novice by Elusive Quality) was fractious in the gate, but came out running to set the early pace. Quite Ready (More Than Ready - Precious Brownie by Golden Missile) was chasing. Radiant Talent and Celebrity Jack were not far off, tracking the early speed. Radiant Talent made his move and spurted away. Celebrity Jack moved into second, but he was no match for Radiant Talent, who went on to win by 4 3/4 lengths. Debuting Proper Empire (Empire Maker - Proper Cielo by Conquistador Cielo) closed well to take third over a tiring Notmyfirstime. Speargun made up some places for 5th. Street Fight bumped at the break and retreated, beating only a tired Quite Ready. Watch the Replay.

Sweetnessngoodness was Spun Clear

All twelve ran on the Polytrack. Enthalpy (Bluegrass Cat - Tizsweet by Cee's Tizzy) was the choice of the bettors. Spun Clear (Hard Spun - Diaphanous by Unbridled) was 12-1. I was liking Jazil's Song (Jazil - Song of Confidence by Confide) and Perfect City (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Ruby City by Carson City) on the track. Spun Clear made a good appearance as well. Sweetnessngoodness (Cuvee - Regal Ballet by Stravinsky) was getting a lot of air time. Enthalpy acted like she had never seen a gate before. Jockey Victor Lebron hopped off, and she went in. However, she came out a little slowly. There was a scramble up front. Hooey (Holy Bull - Aly's Sweet Sheba by Twining), Mollie's Prize (Pure Prize - Ultreya by Gone West), and Perfect City were all there, but it was Spun Clear who emerged with the lead. She was pursued by Sweetnessngoodness. On the turn, Sweetnessngoodness swept by Spun Clear, and went on by for a 5 3/4 length win. Spun Clear was getting tired, but she had plenty left to hold second. 67-1 first-timer Chaotic Cat (Tale of the Cat - Joyful Chaos by Rahy) came on to finish third, paying $31.80 to show.
