News and Notes

Don't forget to keep recommending stallions to follow for 2012. I'll put the poll together in a couple of weeks.

Notice that I have previewed two races for tomorrow, and one for Tuesday.

January 1 Results

Begging for a Win

Morning line favorite Rockin Boogie (Rockport Harbor - Only Seventeen by Exploit) was scratched, leaving 9, including the entry of Beggarthyneighbor (Half Ours - Postulant by Pulpit) and Inflation Target (Tapit - Prall Street by Cherokee Run), and this entry was heavily favored. Power Ballad (Corinthian - Bandstand by Deputy Minister) was 14-1. He looked good in the paddock, but not as good as Inflation Target, whose appearance inspired a "wow" from me. Big Monster (Fusaichi Pegasus - Mad Dash by Broad Brush) is in fact a monster. Tricky Slam (Langfuhr - Every Trick by Grand Slam) unseated his rider in the warmup, but was soon aprehended. Smarty Julips (Smarty Jones - Sweeterthan Julips by Theatrical (IRE)) acted up at the load, and Tricky Slam was reluctant to enter the gate as well. Beggarthyneighbor went to the lead. Smarty Julips and Quite Spectacular (Bernardini - R Lady Joy by Vicar) were chasing early. Then Steele Road (Street Cry (IRE) - Ashado by Saint Ballado) came on to challenge Beggarthyneighbor. Inflation Target was starting to run as well, but he was green. Steele Road fought to the wire, but Beggarthyneighbor held him off for a neck win. It was another 3/4 back to green Inflation Target, who is definitely one to watch next time. Power Ballad finished up in 6th. Hopefully, he'll improve. Watch the Replay.

Leaving them in Finnegans Wake

All 12 ran on the firm turf. Seve (Giant's Causeway - Our Dani by Homebuilder) and Bridge Loan (Empire Maker - Bridge Game by Giant's Causeway) took early money, but Coach Royal (Lemon Drop Kid - Pagosa Springs by A.P. Indy) was the tepid favorite at post time. Courageous Ruler (Corinthian - La Gueriere by Lord At War (ARG)) was 28-1. I was liking Bridge Loan in the paddock, but Seve looked good too. On the track Into the Fray (War Front - Deed I Do by Alydeed) caught my eye, and Get Right (Malibu Moon - Liberty Flag by Kingmambo) was interesting. Courageous Ruler was getting little air time. Debuting Pikestar (Aldebaran - Whatdreamsrmadeof by Graeme Hall) was left at the break. The rest were away well, with Twin (Omega Code - Cuchu by Storm Creek) grabbing the lead from his rail spot. Bridge Loan and Coach Royal were up close, as well as Get Right. Bridge Loan began to catch Twin after 6 furlongs, but there was a lot of company coming. Rolling best on the outside was longshot Finnegans Wake (Powerscourt (GB) - Boat's Ghost by Silver Ghost), who went on by for a smart 2 length win. Not much separated 2nd through 6th, with Golden Ticket (Speightstown - Business Plan by Deputy Minister), Get Right, Bridge Loan, Sir Sidney (Ghostzapper - Quite a Ruckus by Richter Scale), and Saturnus (Any Given Saturday - Fabulous Finish by Grand Slam) claiming those spots. Courageous Ruler was in a good spot on the rail, but had to steady on the turn, and couldn't get going, finishing 8th. Watch the Replay.

Give Me the Mula (colt; Corinthian - Mula Mula by Gone West) was scratched from race 9 at Parx Racing, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $12,500). The winner was favorite Country Risk (Lion Heart - Country Beauty by Country Pine). Watch the Replay.
