Showing Some Sense

Urbanini (Bernardini - Urbane by Citidancer) was scratched, leaving 8 on the fast track. Treasured Up (Medaglia d'Oro - Melisma by Well Decorated) was favored, but Avie's Sense (Street Sense - Fly for Avie by Lord Avie) and Uptown Bertie (More Than Ready - De Bertie by De Niro) also received plenty of attention from the bettors. Invasor Beauty (Invasor - She's Scrumpy by Squadron Leader) was 9-1. She made a favorable first impression, but Avie's Sense looked good as well. I liked debuting Perfect Forever (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Lemons Forever by Lemon Drop Kid) on the track. Chernomorochka (Hold for Gold - Slewtress by Seattle Slew) was a late scratch. Invasor Beauty broke on top, but she was soon joined, and passed by Avie's Sense. By the turn, Avie's Sense had more than 3 lengths on Invasor Beauty, who was solid in second. Invasor Beauty tried to apply some pressure, but Avie's Sense spurted away again. Uptown Bertie moved into second, and Treasured Up grabbed third, but no one had an answer for Avie's Sense, who came home 5 3/4 lengths in front. Invasor Beauty tired to fourth after her early involvement, but it was an improved effort for her as well. Watch the Replay.

The Gentlemen Take the Bet

Conserve (Tapit - Classic Woman by Storm Bird) was scratched, which allowed AE entrant War General (War Front - Lacy Lady by Jeblar) to run. AE Twill Be (Tiznow - Little Bonnet by Coronado's Quest) stayed on the sidelines. The track was fast. Nonno's Boy (Successful Appeal - Singin Up a Storm by Storm Cat) took the early money, but Elusive Story (Tale of the Cat - Elusive Honey by Elusive Quality, was favored at post time. Lightly Wound (Hard Spun - Frolicing by Royal Academy)  was 12-1, and Street Life (Street Sense - Stone Hope by Grindstone) was 22-1. I liked Late Night Action (Malibu Moon - Royal Sanction by Royal Academy) as they headed to the track, as well as War General a bit. Lightly Wound had some bounce on the track. Just a Minute (Street Cry (IRE) - Added Time by Gilded Time) was looking good, and Good Morning Diva (Lion Heart - Missy's Advantage by Tactical Advantage) was a bit rambunctious. Gentlemen's Bet (Half Ours - Lady of Sun by Gentlemen (ARG)) got to the lead from his rail spot. Nonno's Boy set after him. War General and Majestic Number (Officer - Ecstatic Girls by Mr. Greeley) were also close to the pace. Lightly Wound was off slowly, and Street Life didn't begin much better. Nonno's Boy continued to chase Gentlemen's Ben, but that one began to pull away in the stretch. He went on to post a 7 1/4 length win. Nonno's Boy held second over Good Morning Diva, who took third late. Majestic Number ran fairly evenly to finish fourth. Street Life and Lightly Wound did not have much impact, finishing 8th and 11th. Watch the Replay.

Miss Netta (filly Street Sense - Dyna Peak by Dynaformer), who loaded with a blanket, spotted the field several lengths at the break. She began picking off horses, and just caught The Cat's All That (Discreet Cat - Pantufla by Rubiano) for a smart win in race 9 at Gulfstream Park, a mile and a sixteenth Allowance/Optional Claiming Race. I would expect to see her back in stakes company next time out. Grade I stakes-placed Miss Netta now has 2 wins and a third in 4 starts, with earnings of $91,500. Watch the Replay.

Billy O (colt; Corinthian - Zada Rae by Unbridled's Song) dueled for the lead in race 2 at Aqueduct, a 6 furlong Starter Allowance Race, but tired and finished 6th. Thor's Mjolnor (Utopia (JPN) - Thunder Babe by Appealing Skier) came from off the pace to go by everyone, and win by 3 lengths. Watch the Replay.

Winston C (colt; Corinthian - The Happy Hopper by El Prado (IRE)) did not get in off the AE list for race 10 at Gulfstream, a Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $35,000) at a mile on the firm turf. The winner was Buzz the Deputy (Deputy Wild Cat - Savannah Princess by Gilded Time). Watch the Replay.

Always nice to see the "last" foals do so well - congrats to The Last Meow

I remember reading a year ago or so that one of Storm Cat's last, I believe 3 foals of 2009, was named "The Last Meow".  I wondered if she would make it to the track.  Don't know the details of the race but glad to see she won.  I hope she goes on to bigger and better things to put a last mark on the great Storm Cat.

Thanks for the race.  Wow, wrong lead and never feeling the whip.  Impressive.  Don't know what she beat but when I saw Pletcher/Velasquez in hindsight it looked good.  As one of Secretariats biggest fans I love anything from Storm Cat and glad to see Big Red has a potential great granddaughter to go on to do better things.
