And the Winner Is The Green Monkey?

And The Winner Is...

The votes have been tallied and the The Green Monkey has secured the fifth stallion spot for 2012, joining Curlin, Big Brown, Henrythenavigator, and Midnight Lute. I know some of you may be disappointed with this result, but remember a good sire can come from anywhere. The Green Monkey may have never won a race, but he did sell for $16 million as a 2-year-old, and may produce some precocious offspring. If nothing else, he has some offspring with great names. I will try to have the stallion pages up by Friday. Thanks to everyone for voting, and for your comments throughout the voting process.

It's a Coup

The race was taken off of the turf, and run at a mile on the sloppy (sealed) main track. Spinning Wildcat (Hard Spun - Hollywood Wildcat by Kris S.) was scratched, along with Prissy (Unbridled's Song - Last Kitten by Catienus), Crafty Push (Dixie Union - Lemon Blossom by Lemon Drop Kid), Certainty (Lawyer Ron - I Don't Know by Star de Naskra), Brew Blessings (Milwaukee Brew - Langoureuse by Gilded Time), Quinte West (First Samurai - Aldebaran Light by Seattle Slew), Party Hardy (Harlan's Holiday - Regrets Only by Black Tie Affair (IRE)), and Daddy's Kiss (Scat Daddy - Eliza's Kiss by Sejm). Coup (Empire Maker - French Lady (NZ) by Entrepreneur (GB)) was made the favorite of the remaining 7, and Thisizsparta (Corinthian - Deputy Sue by Lotareason) was 4-1. Kitty Caution (Tale of the Cat - Catch a Warning by Caveat), Thisizsparta, and Coup went for the early lead. Coup dropped back a bit to allow Kitty Caution and Thisizsparta to duel, and Drama Drama (Lemon Drop Kid - Sixty Rocketts by Belong to Me) moved closer. They were not going too fast out there, :25.05, :48.64. Thisizsparta took a short lead, as Kitty Caution began to retreat. But, Coup and Drama Drama were right there. Coup took the lead as they moved into the stretch. Thisizsparta continued to battle, but Coup pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Making up some ground to pick up third was Preach Tome Daddy (Scat Daddy - Evangelizer by Saint Ballado), as Drama Drama tired to fourth, followed by Dance With Gio (Dance With Raves - Gracious Megan by Safe Prospect), Kitty Caution, and Mistie Royal (Mizzen Mast - Royal Beluga (GB) by Soviet Star). I am really dissapointed that we have this side show act on the Maiden Watch when we could have had a horse with star appeal. It's like a bad joke no one gets.

The only reason this colt was 16 million dollar's is because Shiek Mohammads people and the Coolmore people got into a bidding war over him. He was a failure on the track and, pedigree aside, will most likely be a failure in the breeding shed.

Holy Smoke Invader!...Well glad the lobbying is over may the best horse - sire win...should be very interesting to see which sires prove best thanks for your efforts to make this dynamic...Chris is there a way of doing a horse/entry search to follow a sire such as Circular Quay to be notified when his or other offspring are entered in a race? I have some horse/trainer watches on DRF...Don

Don - Brisnet offers a sire watch through their Stable Alert system: www.brisnet.com/.../static.cgi However, it is 35 cents per name per day.

The other option is to enter the names individually in one of the watch systems. There is a free site http://www.pedigreequery.com/ where you can get offspring names. (see http://www.pedigreequery.com/progeny/circular+quay for example). This is most certainly incomplete, but it is free, and it's a start.

I would love it if readers would follow other 1st-year stallions and post their entries and/or results. I think it would definitely add to the blog.

Don & Chris, that's what I did, the pedigree querry thing for Hard Spun. I have two virtual stables, one has all Hard Spun offspring and the other one is everyone else. Hard Spun is off to a very good start on the Second crop sire standings.

Looks like thats what I will have to do with the Ravens Pass this year. In fact I have so many horses in both stables I will probably have to start a third.

I would be happy to follow and contribute for Showing Up.

Criminal Type - Great if you can follow and comment on Showing Up offspring.

Raven's Pass will be harder, because most of his offspring will run in Europe. The NA systems will accept the names, but you won't get many notices. I use irishracing.com's HorseTracker for Europe, but I don't believe that you can enter names until the horse has been entered.

I have about 6 accounts. This time of year, I delete and move, and get ready for the new.

Exactly, As a little aside, I just looked at Ravens Pass's registered foals and found a couple very interesting progeny. One a colt named Conversing out of Mini Chat, who is dam of Dixie Chatter and Recent stakes winning filly Rumor by Indian Charlie. Another colt Ravens Tower is out of Tiznow's full sister Tizdubai. He only has about 20 registered foals showing. Same with showing up, only about 20 registered 2010 foals so far.

Criminal Type - I see 80+ registered foals for Raven's Pass. I think the list that you are looking at is named 2yos. It's early, most are unnamed.

Hey, if The Green Monkey can get a stallion spot this year (over Raven's Pass and Brother Derek, who actually WERE good race horses), does this mean that Rapid Redux will get it next year?  It appears that the little fact that he's a gelding wouldn't stop some of your voters,

I just can't get over the the fact that Ravens Pass who was the first European trained colt to win the Breeders Cup Classic -gets bumped by a colt who never even was competative in a race. Maybe some of the people who voted for the Green Monkey just liked his name.

People want to follow the Green Monkey for the same reason they can't help themselves from staring at car wrecks.

Will The Green Monkey be the Zippy Chippy of Maiden Watch?

Actually, it's about precocity. I've been following the offspring of the great Invasor.  They were not precocious at all, so he was nowhere near the top ten as a freshman sire. He had more winners in January than all last year and about half his 2 yo runners have won by now. Late development is a disadvantage for the TC and we may not see their best till after that...
