Stakes Result

How Do I Win (ridgling; Corinthian - Silver Crown by Distorted Humor) set the pace in the Withers Stakes (gr. III), but had pressure from Hakama (First Samurai - Check by Unbridled), and couldn't hold off favorite Alpha (Bernardini - Munnaya by Nijinsky II), who won by 3 1/4 lengths. How Do I Win weakened, and finished fourth. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Withers here.

Romping

All eight ran on the fast track. Johnny La Rue (Harlan's Holiday - Moonlit Mistress by Deputy Minister) took the early money, but Cytherean (Street Sense - Venusberg (ARG) by Southern Halo) was favored at post time. Hard Line (Hard Spun - Drawing a Blank by El Prado (IRE)) was 5-1. Cytherean looked good in the paddock, and Johnny La Rue was ready for action. Romp City (Holy Bull - Dominica by Housebuster) was off slowly. Longshot Backinthecotton (High Cotton - Backtothebooks by Notebook) sprinted to the lead, with St. Johnswood (Tiznow - Amazing Buy by High Yield) chasing. The pack began to catch up with Backinthecotton, including Cytherean and Hard Line. Hard Line hit the front, and seemed home free. But, Romp City was rolling from the back of the pack. He went on to score a 4 1/2 length win. Hard Line was secure in second, and Johnny La Rue finished a neck in front of Cytherean. Watch the Replay.

An Immaculate Win

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Mile High Magic (Roman Ruler - Silverbulletfolly by Vindication) was the tepid early choice, and took more and more money as post time approached, going off at 4-5. Disturbingbehavior (Hard Spun - Off the Richter by Richter Scale) was 27-1. I liked Eaton Hall (El Corredor - Anna My Sweetheart by Stravinsky) on the track. Gophari (Eddington - Phari by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) was scratched after loading. There was a delay, as all the horses were backed out and the jockey dismounted. Once the field was reassembled, Eaton Hall went to the lead. He was accompanied by Immaculate (Distorted Humor - Folklore by Tiznow), Currahee (A. P. Warrior - Smart N Polished by Polish Numbers), and Mile High Magic. These four separated from the others. Eaton Hall led into the stretch, but began to weaken. Immaculate outfinished Mile High Magic and Currahee for the victory, with Eaton Hall settling for fourth. Disturbingbehavior had a good spot on the rail early, but tired, and finished 8th (last). Watch the Replay.

A Bold Front

MTO Sir Bond (Street Sense - Emmaus by Silver Deputy) was an early scratch. The rains came during the 6th race, and the race was taken off of the turf, and run at a mile and a sixteenth on the sloppy main track. In addition to Sir Bond, See Me Proud (Proud Citizen - Noseeme by Lear Fan), Sachem Spirit (Mr. Greeley - Ballette (IRE) by Giant's Causeway),  Brando (Smart Strike - See the Wind by Sky Classic), Paroled (Flatter - Reduced Sentence by Broad Brush), and Henny One (Henny Hughes - One Eightyonephila by Elusive Quality) were also scratched. Donoharm (Lemon Drop Kid - Tasso Run by Cherokee Run) was favored among the 6 remaining, and Mojo Workin (English Channel - Laramie Moon (ARG) by Laramie Trail) was 3-1. Fleurdefortyfour (Any Given Saturday - Ready to Talk by More Than Ready) set the early pace, pursued by Donoharm. Bold Front (War Front - Red Taffeta by Charismatic) began to make up some ground. He caught Fleurdefortyfour late to win by 3/4 length. Fleudefortyfour was a neck better than a closing Attendant (More Than Ready - Queen's Play by Kingmambo), and Sewanee (Bernardini - Seoul by Deputy Minister) was fourth. Mojo Workin sat off the early pace, but couldn't really mount a run, and finished 5th. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate, and he'll get back to the turf next time. Watch the Replay.

Parranda (English Channel - Dynamic Feature by Rahy) started slowly, came rolling 4 wide, and held off all challenges to win her debut in race 4 at Gulfstream Park, a mile Maiden Claiming Race ($75,000 - $65,000 Claiming Price) on the good turf at 67-1. English Crossing (filly; English Channel - Lady Solvig by Giant's Causeway) didn't run badly, finishing fourth. Watch the Replay.

Captain Webb (ridgling; English Channel - Miss Mary Pat by Service Stripe) had a brief lead in the stretch in race 3 at Tampa Bay Downs, a mile Allowance/Optional Claiming Race on the firm turf, but couldn't hold off Burn the Mortgage (Kitten's Joy - Mortgage the House by Chester House). Still, it was a positive 2012 debut for Captain Webb. Watch the Replay.

Dynamical (colt; Hard Spun - Favorite Feather by Capote) chased Teeth of the Dog (Bluegrass Cat - Deputy Reality by Deputy Ministe) throughout in race 9 at Gulfstream Park, a 1 1/8 mile Maiden Special Weight, but came up a head short. I guess this means that Dynamical will not be running tomorrow at Gulfstream. Watch the Replay.

See, The Green Monkey and Stratify ARE from the same family....<giggle> Great Job By Immaculate who's been on my watch list for a while.

Teeth of the Dog and Dyanamical were together the whole way in their race. I had hoped Dynamical would win, but the Mike Matz horse was good for me too. Think another 16th would have seen Dynamical in the winners circle though.

Really dissapointed in Sky Kingdom yesterday but everyone (commentators) were saying that horses looked like they were not handling the track well. (Liason and Sky Kingdom both) Thankfully everyone was unhurt. Two spills yesterday that could have been much much worse.

Tapizar went out there and totally proved my point about Tapits being at their best when 2 and early 3 yr olds.

Can't wait for Union Rag's 3 yr old debut as I was not that impressed with Alpha's win over what I consider mediocre horses in the Withers.

Yep, Great name, Tail of the Cat, Teeth of the Dog. pretty clever. I like it when they put some thought into it, not just a combo of the parents names.
