Afford (colt; Street Sense - Unaffordable by Unbridled) trailed early in race 7 at Fair Grounds, a mile and 70 yard Allowance/Optional Claiming Race, and then came rolling on the outside for a determined nose victory over Tiz Moe, despite being pushed out by that rival in the stretch. Watch the Replay. Personally, I was more impressed with Afford than Fed Biz (see below), but I may be a bit biased. Afford now has 2 wins and 2 thirds in four starts, with earnings of $52,904.

Blueskiesnrainbows (colt; English Channel - Cho Cho San by Deputy Minister) finished third in race 2 at Santa Anita, a mile Allowance/Optional Claiming Race, behind 5 3/4 length winner Fed Biz (Giant's Causeway - Spunoutacontrol by Wild Again) and 2nd-place Consulado (More Than Ready - Goodbye Stranger by Broad Brush), who was 6 1/2 lengths in front of Blueskiesnrainbows. Gagne (filly; Invasor (ARG) - Walk On Broadway by Broad Brush) was scratched from race 9 at Laurel Park, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $25,000). The winner was Anita Job (A.P. Warrior - Rockpaperscissors by Precise End), who came from off the pace. Watch the Replay.

Skyring (English Channel - Violet Lady by Seattle Slew) makes his second start, after finishing 5th at 5.5 furlongs on a muddy track at Oaklawn on January 26. He did make up some ground late in that race. This time, he'll be facing 3 and 4-year-olds. Since his debut, he worked 5 furlongs in 1:04.80 on a good track at Oaklawn on February 3. Skyring is a half brother to 7 winners, including stakes winner Caballero Negro, and grade II winner Greenspring, who earned $205,780. Violet Lady, dam of Skyring, is a full sister to one winner, and a half sister to 4 winners, including stakes-placed Real Bear.

Four-year-olds Spin Zone (Candy Ride (ARG) - Harve de Grace by Boston Harbor), Il Mostro (Tapit - Life Is Beautiful by De Niro), and Drogue (Victory Gallop - Blu Spur by Northern Spur (IRE)) finished 2nd, 4th, and 6th in a 6 furlong contest at Oaklawn Park on January 22. Spin Zone, who was off slowly and closed well on January 22, previously ran at Delaware Park in 2011, finishing 6th at a mile and 70 yards on June 7, and 5th at 6 furlongs on May 11. A $340,000 yearling, he is out of the winning mare Harve de Grace. Harve de Grace has produced 2 winners, including grade II winner Concord Point, who earned $669,260. Harve de Grace is a half sister to 5 winners, including grade II stakes-placed Deb's Charm, and grade III winner Tasha's Miracle. Deb's Charm is the dam of the English Channel 3-year-old gelding English Major. Il Mostro also has 2 additional starts, both last year. He finished 6th at 7 furlongs at Churchilll Downs on November 24, and 3rd at a mile at Turfway Park on December 10. The only other 4-year-old in the race is Byrd William (Bellamy Road - Gracious Granny by Lost Code), who is an old friend, as he was one of our Maiden Watch horses in 2010.
