Bringing Life to the Street

Ruthless Alley (Flower Alley - Endless Dream by Tale of the Cat) was scratched, leaving 8 on the fast track. Quorum (Spellbinder - Justalil' Lovin by Casa Dante) was the early favorite, but Sporting Gent (Sharp Humor - Oath by Known Fact) was the choice at post time. Street Life (Street Sense - Stone Hope by Grindstone) was 4-1, and Five Sixteen (Invasor - Third Street by Salt Lake) was 5-1. Unyielding (Mineshaft - Wiscasset by Kris S.) caught my eye in the paddock. Tripendicular (Tiznow - True Addiction by Yes It's True) was a little wild on the track. Both Five Sixteen and Street Life looked good. Espiritu Libre (Lion Heart - Zienat by Woodman) went for the lead from his outside post. Tripendicular, Quorum, and Big Creek (Indian Charlie - Major Idea by Cherokee Run) were up close. Five Sixteen was at the back of the leading pack, and Street Life was far back. Espiritu Libre continued to lead, but company was coming. Quorum made the first move, and hit the front. It seemed as though he would win it. But, suddenly, coming from nowhere was Street Life. He had to weave through traffic, but he was rolling, and went by everyone for an impressive 2 1/2 win. Five Sixteen did some rallying of his own, to miss second by just a head to Quorum. I wouldn't be surprised to find Triple Crown nominee Street Life on some Derby lists after this run. And how about Five Sixteen as an early Belmont Stakes pick? Watch the Replay.

The Winning Ribbon

The turf was good, and only the AEs were left on the sidelines. Royal Fury (Langfuhr - Miss Chapin by Royal Academy) was favored by a couple of ticks over Pearl Bay (Rush Bay - Magic Pearl by Stormy Atlantic). Spun Ribbon (Hard Spun - Take the Ribbon by Chester House) was 14-1. Tola (Bluegrass Cat - Heart Warmer by Devil's Bag) looked nice in the paddock. Flat Out Foxy (Flatter - Foxcroft Sister by Lord Gaylord) and Spun Ribbon looked good on the track. A T Money (Unusual Heat - Andover the Money by Dynaformer) has a striking white tail. The start was good.  Play Soleil (Latent Heat - Prevention by Aptitude) broke on top, but Sid's Kid (Smart Strike - Unbridled Sidney by Unbridled's Song) grabbed the lead from her inside position. Flat Out Floxy and Play Soleil were up close. Sid's Kid continued to lead, as Spun Ribbon began to get involved. She took the lead and kept going, registering a 1 1/2 length win. Flat Out Foxy and Play Soleil hung around to finish second and third, and first-timer Just Say Hey (Rockport Harbor - Party Chatter by Pleasant Colony) claimed fourth. Watch the Replay.

A Majestic Win

There were no scratches, and the track was sloppy. Rise Against (Discreet Cat - Yolie's Choice by Silver Deputy) was favored. He looked good strolling the paddock. Port Conway (Street Sense - Madison's Quest by Deputy Minister) was 10-1. He got a nice warmup on the track. Longshot Author Bob (Concerto - Sequentially by Lord Avie) caught my eye. The start was decent, although Umstead (Honour and Glory - Family Effort by Goldlust) was off a bit slow. Rise Against and Majestic Number (Officer - Ecstatic Girls by Mr. Greeley) went for the lead. Port Conway was near the back, and Author Bob was a long way behind the others. Rise Against and Majestic Number continued to battle, as Fort Boonesborough (Pioneering - Glory's Light by Halo) made up some ground. Majestic Number took control in the stretch, pulling away for a 3 1/4 length win over Fort Boonesborough. Rise Against weakened to third, 7 lengths behind Fort Boonesborough. Port Conway made up some spots to finish 5th. Watch the Replay.

The Golden Ticket

As predicted, this one was taken off of the turf and run at a mile and a sixteenth on the good main track. Yankee Boss (English Channel - Jenny Joy by Acceptable) was scratched, along with Grand Tier (Theatrical (IRE) - Prisa by Danehill), Quiet Danger (Bernardini - Amansara by War Chant), and Logan Street (Shakespeare - Moonlet Masquerade by Woodman). Bridge Loan (Empire Maker - Bridge Game by Giant's Causeway) and Golden Ticket (Speightstown - Business Plan by Deputy Minister) battled for favoritism, Bridge Loan won that one. Big John B (Hard Spun - Baldomera by Doneraile Court) was almost 10-1, and Common Bond (Hard Spun - Pilfer by Deputy Minister) was 7-1. He was adding blinkers, and looked good on the track. Bridge Loan was loaded sans jockey. Street Talk'n (Street Cry (IRE) - Kimchi by Langfuhr) was a bit reluctant. The start was good, but it seemed like no one really wanted the lead. Bridge Loan took it, but was running off the rail. Common Bond and Old Time Hockey (Smarty Jones - Grat by A.P. Indy) took second and third. Old Time Hockey came through on the inside to take the lead. Bridge Loan was still there, but Common Bond was dropping back. Golden Ticket was moving on the outside. He surged by the top pair for a 2 length win. Old Time Hockey just held off Bridge Loan for second, and there was a break to the others. Big John B didn't run much, finishing 5th, and Common Bond tired to finish 7th (last). Watch the Replay.

Sometimes it's very hard to cheer for a horse when they are running against another horse you like or with a pedigree you like. That's teh case with me and the 9th at Gulfstream. You know I love those Hard Spun babies, but in this case another filly's pedigree got me excited. One of my all time favorite horses is Daylami. Daylight Ride is out of a Daylami mare by ElPrado.. I am guessing shes probably gray. Unfortunatly Daylami has not proven himself a very accomplished stallion like his Arc winning half brother Dalakhani (who didnt even come close to Daylami's bankroll) But I still love him. One of the greatest moments in Breeders Cup Turf history (in my mind) was when Frankie Dettori rode him to victory in 1999. I was there that day at Gulfstream and He just gave me goosebumps. His coat was almost irridescent. So gorgeous. I was always pissed that they sent him off to relative obscurity in South Africa to stud. Thankfully now he is back in Ireland breeding mostly for hurdles. I am hoping he proves to be an exceptional broodmare sire one day.
