News and Notes

I hope that everyone had a good weekend, and a Happy Valentine's Day. We haven't had any Maiden Watch horses entered in Maiden Special Weights for the past few days, so the blog has been quiet. That changes Thursday, with horses entered at Tampa Bay Downs and Fair Grounds. I did check our 2-year-olds yesterday, but there were no new names.

February 12 Results

Racing was canceled at Parx, so Rumack (Corinthian - Lillybuster by Housebuster) will have to wait for another day.

Stakes Result

Vionnet (filly; Street Sense - Cambiocorsa by Avenue of Flags) was no match for favorite Indigo River (Kodiac (GB) - Sunny Slope (GB) by Mujtahid) in the Sweet Life Stakes on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita, but she beat everyone else to finish second. Stakes-placed Vionnet now has 1 win and 1 second in 4 starts, with earnings of $51,990. Downhill at Santa Anita might be her thing. Watch the Replay.

Laying Down the Law

Nevesian (Empire Maker - Mepanache by Deputy Minister), and the track was fast for the remaining 6. Down by Law (Awesome Again - Danzig's Humor by Lemon Drop Kid) was the heavy favorite. Be With Me (Corinthian - Sonoma Song by Unbridled's Song) was just under 4-1. Be With Me and Down by Law bumped at the start. Bluegrass Rumor (Bluegrass Cat - Reason to Talk by Sabona) and Down by Law went for the lead, with Bluegrass Rumor winning that battle. Down by Law and Be With Me were close in second and third. Be With Me was rank and on the rail. Jockey Alan Garcia had to check her repeatedly to keep her off of Bluegrass Rumor's heels. Bluegrass Rumor continued to lead with Down in pursuit. They were not going overly fast, :25.06, :50.85, 1:16.45. Down by Law got closer as they rounded the turn. Bluegrass Rumor was tough, but Down by Law wore her down late for a 3/4 length win. Nebraska (Street Cry (IRE) - Honest Lady by Seattle Slew) and Opalite (Quiet American - Lady in Waiting by Woodman) both finished strongly to pick up third and fourth. Be With Me weakened and finished 5th. She was certainly compromised by her early behavior. Watch the Replay.

One Fine Dame

Heaven's Song (Hard Spun - Unbridled Beauty by Unbridled's Song) was scratched, along with Scarlett Madeleine (Smart Strike - Escena by Strawberry Road (AUS)), Daddy's Kiss (Scat Daddy - Eliza's Kiss by Sejm), Sister Pippa (Dixie Union - Brilliant Thunder by Thunder Gulch), and Edit (Unbridled's Song - Key to the Cat by Tale of the Cat). AE entrant Margaret Lilian (Political Force - Storm Dancer by Always a Classic) got to run. Daylight Ride (El Prado (IRE) - Going Day by Daylami (IRE)) was made the favorite. Debuting Kiss an Angel (Hard Spun - Beauty's Due by Devil His Due) was 46-1. Margaret Lilian went for the lead from her outside post, and was able to clear the field. Irish Mission (Giant's Causeway - Misty Mission by Miswaki), Lewa (Empire Maker - Nice Nelly by Seattle Slew), Dame Marie (Smart Strike - Crystal Crossing (IRE) by Royal Academy), and Fabulous Sasha (Olmodavor - Fabulous Fury by Fabulous Frolic) were all close. Kiss an Angel was in 7th early, but not that far out of it, as the first 8 were tightly bunched. Margaret Lilian continued to lead them, as Irish Mission continued to chase. Vacationing (Harlan's Holiday - Seattle Qui by Seattle Slew) made on move on the outside to get involved, and Dame Marie was also getting closer. Dame Marie got the best of Margaret Lilian late to win by a neck. Margaret Lilian was 2 lengths better than Vacationing. Kiss an Angel was briefly third, but had to settle for fourth. Still, not a bad debut. I must say that I love the sound of the exacta in this one, Dame Marie/Margaret Lilian, sounds so proper. Watch the Replay.
