Breezing to Victory

The race was run on the firm turf, so MTO entrants Just Jan (Any Given Saturday - Alyssum by Storm Cat) and Cheery (Distorted Humor - Yell by A.P. Indy) were left out. Also scratched was Crossing the Tape (Johannesburg - Gabriellina Giof (GB) by Ashkalani (IRE)). La Belle Cat (Tale of the Cat - La Belle Danse by Beau Genius) was the tepid favorite, a couple of ticks below 3-1. Wine Princess (Ghostzapper - Azeri by Jade Hunter) was respected at 7-2. The start was good. Gold 'n White (Alke - Gold Minx by Officer) and Play Soleil (Latent Heat - Prevention by Aptitude) went for the early lead. La Belle Cat (Tale of the Cat - La Belle Danse by Beau Genius), Lindsays Song (My Golden Song - Cats Meow by Storm Cat), and Islet (Speightstown - Captiva by Capote) were just off the leading pair, and there was a bit of a gap to the remaining two fillies, Wine Princess and French Breeze (Elusive Quality - Di's Delight by French Deputy). Play Soleil hit the front as they entered the turn, and French Breeze began to make up ground. At this point, Wine Princess was still at the back, but the pack was fairly tight. French Breeze caught Play Soleil in the stretch and pulled away for a 1 1/2 length win. Wine Princess was motoring late to pick up the second spot over Play Soleil, who was just better than La Belle Cat. Lindsays Song, Islet, and Gold 'n White completed the finish order.
