Stakes Results

Just as he did when he broke his maiden, Street Life (colt; Street Sense - Stone Hope by Grindstone) came rolling late to win the Broad Brush Stakes. He took the race by 1/2 lengths over pacesetter Copy My Swagger (Easing Along - Danse Kongo by Petionville). Hard Facts (colt; Hard Spun - Banshee Winds by Known Fact) tracked the pace throughout, and finished third. It was an especially impressive finish for Street Life, as the fractions were slow: :25.35, :50.73, 1:15.35. It looks like the Wood Memorial or the Arkansas Derby is next for Street Life. Watch the Replay.

Optimizer (colt; English Channel - Indy Pick by A. P. Indy) was dismissed at almost 28-1 in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II), but he looked amazing on the track before the race, and ran to his looks, rolling from off the pace late. He couldn't catch favoite Secret Circle (Eddington - Ragtime Hope by Dixieland Band), but he passed everyone else to finish a good second, despite not changing leads. Look for Optimizer to run back in the Arkansas Derby. With D. Wayne Lukas calling the shots, he will be given every opportunity to make the Kentucky Derby. Watch the Replay. Grabbing the Ring

Hardtap (Tapit - Blinky's Girl by Silver Deputy) was the only scratch, and the track was fast. Skyring (English Channel - Violet Lady by Seattle Slew) was favored, and Cori (Corinthian - Minnie's Minister by Deputy Minister) was almost 65-1. Skyring made a favorable impression in the prelims. Boomer (Street Cry (IRE) - Salty Farma by Salt Lake) and Beer Garden (Tapit - Oldcourt Rose by Mining) battled early, with Skyring just off of these. He moved up to join the top pair on the turn. Boomer had had enough, and began to drop back. But coming on was Proper Empire (Empire Maker - Proper Cielo by Conquistador Cielo). The trio of Skyring, Beer Garden, and Proper Empire battled to the wire, while exchanging bumps. It was Skyring in the middle who got his neck up for the victory, with Beer Garden stubborn in second, a neck better than Proper Empire. Despite the bumping, there was no inquiry, and Skyring was safe with his maiden win. Cori showed some early interest, before weakening to finish 10th (last). Watch the Replay.

Pushing to the Win

Entrainment (Medaglia d'Oro - Ron's Lady by Elhayq (IRE)) and First Won (Sarava - Roadofhappydestiny by Lines of Power) were scratched. The track was fast for the remaining 7. Wise Guy Charlie (Indian Charlie - Tree Pipit by Woodman) and Pushingonastring (Distorted Humor - Luna Bella (NZ) by Stravinsky) battled for favoritism, with Pushingonastring the solid choice at post time. Fortin (Invasor (ARG) - Pinta by Carson City) took a little early action, but went off at 11-1. He looked nice on the track. I was also liking Relentless Road (Bellamy Road - Relentless Storm by West Acre) a little bit, although he was acting up in the post parade. The start was decent, altough Magic Harbor (Rockport Harbor - Magic Way by Runaway Groom) was off slowly, and Fortin had to steady early. Relentless Road broke on top, but Wise Guy Charlie grabbed the early lead from his rail spot. Pushingonastring assumed a pressing position, and Fortin began to make up ground. Pushingonastring surged to the lead, and spurted away by several lengths. The only one with a chance to catch him was Fortin. He gave it a good try, but came up 1/2 length short. It was a long way back to third with Rose Brier (Mizzen Mast - Mexicali Rose by El Gran Senor) just keeping his head in front of Magic Harbor. A good win for Pushingonastring, but also a nice debut for Fortin. Watch the Replay.

Hawkedon Through On the Rail

The turf was firm, and there were no scratches. Polar Coordinate (North Light (IRE) - Perfect Arc by Brown Arc) was favored at 2-1, with Nandino (Street Cry (IRE) - Mama Nadine by A.P. Indy) also getting plenty of attention from the bettors. Soapstone Prairie (Hard Spun - Stylish Storm by Storm Bird) was 23-1, and Channelofdreams (English Channel - So Soulful by Real Quiet) was 122-1. Nandino looked good in the paddock. I was liking Hawkedon (Macho Uno - Cheyenne Dream (GB) by Dancing Brave) and Horvat Clan (Purim - Sanibel Breeze by Exploit) on the track. Drunken Spider (Kipling - Frivolous Sal by Lord At War (ARG)) acted up in the gate, but he broke ok, going for the lead with Chief Redneck (Indian Ocean - Picnic Spread by Formal Dinner). It was the latter horse who claimed the advantage. Drunken Spider and Mega Boom (First Samurai - Afleet Change by Time for a Change) chased after Chief Redneck, with Hawkedon in a good spot on the rail. Nandino and Horvat Clan began to make up ground. With a final surge, Hawkedon got through on the rail to claim victory over Chief Redeck by a head, with Horavat Clan and Mega Boom settling for third and fourth. Neither Channelofdreams nor Soapstone were much involved, finishing 7th and 8th. Watch the Replay.
