News and Notes

This will probably be the last day that I will preview three-year-old races for the year, as the 2-year-old season begins in earnest with Keeneland race 1 on Friday, April 6. Although none of our stallions are represented in this race, there are a couple of first-crop sires who have offspring running. I will preview that contest tomorrow.

Too Bold for the Queen

Lovely Counselor (Lawyer Ron - Stylish Beauty by Pleasant Colony) was the only scratch, and the turf was firm. Parish (Pulpit - Saranac Lake by Smart Strike), who had lost her jockey in her only previous outing, took the early money, but Speedy War (War Front - Maid for Speed by Phone Trick) was the slight choice at post time. Queen of England (English Channel - Babae (CHI) by Barkerville) took some action at 7-2. She made her usual favorable impression. Boldy (Forest Wildcat - Bold Ruritana by Bold Ruckus) was a little rambunctious on the track. First-timer Lady of Fashion (El Corredor - Feminine by Tale of the Cat) was left at the break, the others were away well. Queen of England (English Channel - Babae (CHI) by Barkerville) went for the lead, but Grazettes Muchacha (D'wildcat - Grazettes by Alydeed) snagged it first. Queen of England assumed a stalking position. Speedy War and Boldy were just off of the top pair. Queen of England made the lead after 6 furlongs, but company was coming in the form of Boldy and Shepherd's Furey (Latent Heat - Native Wager by Valid Wager). Boldy surged to the lead. Queen of England fought back, but she couldn't hold off Boldy, finishing a length behind that rival. Shepherd's Furey was another 3/4 behind in third, with favorite Speedy War settling for fourth. Shaun Knocks the Rock

The turf was firm, so the MTOs were scratched, including Al Aqsa (Invasor (ARG) - Khalila by Elusive Quality). Also scratched was Got What (Mr. Greeley - Silver Tornado by Maria's Mon). Shaun Washington (Elusive Quality - Triple Act by Theatrical (IRE)) was the even-money favorite. Knock Rock (Corinthian - Lady Cozzette by Cozzene) was almost 15-1, and Meeting (Street Sense - Follow That Dream (GB) by Darshaan (GB)) was 38-1. The favorite looked good, but Knock Rock also looked ready for action. And, he bounced out of the gate to set the early pace. He was pursued by Leroidessioux (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Ubi Star by Spend a Buck) and Get Right (Malibu Moon - Liberty Flag by Kingmambo). Meeting was at the back in the early going. Knock Rock continued to lead, through mild fractions of :23.16, :48.37, and 1:13.39. Dendrite (Rockport Harbor - Tustin by Conquistador Cielo) came running, and moved even with Knock Rock. But these two were both passed by Shaun Washington, who rolled by on the outside for a 2 1/4 length win. However, Knock Rock fought off Dendrite to preserve the place position. Meeting did some running late to finish 5th. It was a much-improved performance for Knock Rock returning to the turf, although if you watch the head-on, you can see that he was up to his old tricks, trying to get out. Hopefully somewhere soon there is a win with Knock Rock's name on it. Watch the Replay.

Quinichette is a Too Rapid

Lumineuse (North Light (IRE) - Pretty Pretty by Silver Deputy) and Unwrapped Package (Value Plus - Powerful Package by Star de Naskra) were scratched. The track was fast for the remaining six. Bebop (Belong to Me - Talent by Cyptoclearance) was the heavy favorite, Call Maritza (English Channel - Dicey Cat by Cat Thief) was 20-1. Rapidize (Midas Eyes - Rapid Halo by Halo) was showing some spunk, and I was liking first-timer Asian Invasion (Proud Accolade - Burmese Ruby by Rubiano) a bit. Call Maritza looked decent on the track, and Rapidize continued to display some feistiness. Business First (Pavarotti - Parish Business by Phone Trick) broke best, but Rapidize came through to set the early pace. Quinichette (Kipling - With Etiquette by Pulpit) was chasing Rapidize, and favorite Bebop was tracking in third. Call Maritza was bumped at the start, and steadied. Quinichette moved even with Rapidize, and then sailed on by. She went on to post an easy 8 1/4 length victory. Rapidize held second over Bebop, with Asian Invasion, Business First, and Call Maritza completing the order. Watch the Replay.
