News and Notes

A day off and a power outage conspired to delay my latest Maiden Watch post. As most of you know by now, Big Brown picked up his first winner when Ruby Brown (filly; Big Brown - Truely Ruby by Red Ransom) won her first start Kazan International Equestrian Complex and Race Track in Russia on June 15. Also in Russia, Zimniy Dvorets (colt; Curlin - Stolen Prayer by Songandaprayer) won the group II Summer Prize Stakes, and Lucky First (colt; Curlin - Dragon Fly (FR) by Sadler's Wells) was also a winner on June 17. Who knew Russia would be so important to Maiden Watch this year? Maybe next year I should request some travel money to investigate the 2-year-olds there.

Henrythenavigator had two new starters on June 23, as Red Explorer (colt; Henrythenavigator - Remote by Seattle Slew) finished 2nd at 5 furlongs over soft ground at Haydock in England, and Spike Lavender (filly; Henrythenavigator - Cats by Storm Cat) finished 8th at 5 furlongs over good turf in Japan.

As hinted above, a power outage prevented me from previewing Get Me a Cocktail's (filly; Big Brown - Impresssive Attire by Seeking the Gold) debut at Arlington Park on Sunday. However, I will recap her race, as well as our Saturday races below.

Churchill Downs has canceled racing for Thursday, June 28, on account of high temperatures on the horizon, so Brown Eyes Blue (filly; Big Brown - Golden Lips by Silver Ghost), who was entered on Thursday, will have to wait for another day for her debut.

Prohibiting a Winner

The track was wet fast. I Want to Dust Her (Mass Market - Excited Angel by Regal Remark) and Electric Girl (Western Expression - Stock Tip by Thunder Gulch) were scratched. Prohibiting (Midnight Lute - Blazing Cat by Tabasco Cat) was favored. Fillies Pineapple (Forestry - Ms Louisett by Siphon (BRZ)) and Willamette (Rosberg - Napa by Feu d'Enfer) battled for second-choice in the wagering. Willamette won that one by a few clicks. Pineapple jumped to the early lead. Prohibiting was off well, but settled in fourth, as Proud Victor (Storm Victory - Proud Bella by Stephanotis) and Lord Harlow (Zanjero - Orange Twilight by Thunder Gulch) set after Pineapple. Pineapple continued to lead, as Lord Harlow came through on the inside to grab second over Proud Victor. At this point, Prohibiting was at the back of the compact field. Lord Harlow hit the front, and Pineapple bolted to the outside rail. Prohibiting came between Lord Harlow and Proud Victor, and wore down Lord Harlow for a 1/2 length win. Lord Harlow was 1 1/4 lengths in front of Proud Victor, who was more than 3 in front of Willamette. Pineapple was eased after bolting. Watch the Replay. Prohibiting is the first winner for Midnight Lute, read more about him here.

Ransoming a Minstrel Win

The turf was firm, and all nine ran. Desert Ransom (Gold Tribute - Maid for Royalty by Desert Royalty) was the 5-2 favorite. Also getting some play were Mr. Bandini's Band (Bandini - Girls Girls Girls by Colonial Affair) and Prince Production (Run Production - Zarb's Queen by Zarbyev). Coteau Curlin (Curlin - Cool Pussycat by Tabasco Cat) was 12-1. Prince Production broke running, and had a clear lead early. Coteau Curlin and Blazing Graduate (Magna Graduate - Blazing Kadie by Our Native) were off slowly, and trailed. Desert Ransom emerged from the pursuing pack to join Prince Production, and those two separated from the rest. They stayed close until the stretch, when Desert Ransom began to pull away. He went on to post a 3 1/2 length win. Themistocles (Lydgate - Young Brodie by Broad Brush) was rolling late to overtake Prince Production for second. Mr. Bandini's Band also make up some ground late to finish fourth. Coteau Curlin never really got rolling, finishing 8th, defeating only fellow-debuter Blazing Graduate. Hopefully, he gained some valuable experience. Watch the Replay.

Fab Flowers of Congratulation

All six ran on the Polytrack. Get Me a Cocktail (Big Brown - Impressive Attire by Seeking the Gold) took the early money, but Fantasy Code (E Dubai - Semaphore Ms. by Lost Code) was favored at post time. I kind of liked the look of You Bought Her (Graeme Hall - Striking T by Smart Strike), but the real eye-catcher was Fab Flowers (Lewis Michael - J. D. Flowers by Dixieland Band). Get Me a Cocktail looked decent. Victoria Shines (Bring the Heat - Quiet Shine by Real Quiet) used her rail position to grab the early lead. She was chased by Fab Flowers and Get Me a Cocktail. On the turn, Fab Flowers moved even with Victoria Shines, and then went on by. Fab Flowers sailed home, winning by 2 3/4 lengths. You Bought Her ran on late to pick up second, well-clear of Sweet Teri K (Sweetsouthernsaint - Runaway Ab by Runaway Groom), who also did her best running late. Get Me a Cocktail tired after her early action, finishing 6th (last). Fab Flowers is the first winner for Lewis Michael. Watch the Replay. Read more about Fab Flowers here.
