News and Notes

Trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole unveiled another good one in race 3 at Belmont Park, as 2-year-old colt Onetwentyeight (Discreet Cat - Box of Joy by Concerto) won his debut, pulling away to win the 5.5 furlong race by 5 lengths after dueling early. Watch the Replay. Discreet Cat had two 2-year-old winners at Belmont Thursday, as colt Slot Play (Discreet Cat - Sweeet Vision by Southern Halo) went gate-to-wire to win race 6, restricted to New York-breds. Watch the Replay. Also at Belmont Park, J Be K picked up his first winner when filly Baby J (J Be K - Lavender Baby by Rubiano) won the 2nd race. Watch the Replay. Read more about Baby J here.

Some entries on the horizon, as Brown Eyes Blue (filly; Big Brown - Golden Lips by Silver Ghost), whose initial entry was lost to the Thursday heat, is entered at Churchill Downs on Saturday, and Hoot'a Loot (colt; Midnight Lute - It's True Romance by Yes It's True) runs Sunday at Lone Star Park. For tomorrow, we'll go back across the ocean for Savanna La Mar (filly; Curlin - Soft Morning by Pivotal (GB)) at Chester.

Rocky Ground Proves Best

The turf was good to firm, and all 10 ran. Debuting Rocky Ground (Acclamation (GB) - Keriyka (IRE) by Indian Ridge (IRE)) was favored, and Santo Prince (Henrythenavigator - Sally Wood by Woodman) was 9-1. He was off a bit slowly. Also slow to start was Echo of Silence (Sandwaki - Statia (FR) by Anabaa). To the lead went Plexolini (Multiplex (GB) - Beverley Bell (GB) by Bertolini). Marvelous Miss (Captain Marvelous (IRE) - Abbeyleix Lady (IRE) by Montjeu (IRE)) was up on the pace as well, but she was rank. Not far off were Rocky Ground and A Certain Romance (Invincible Spirit (IRE) - Tiger's Gene (GER) by Perugino). Rocky Ground surged to the lead with a couple of furlongs to go, as Plexolini began to fade. A Certain Romance continued to chase, but Rocky Ground was home free, winning by 4 lengths. Running well late after his tardy start was Echo of Silence, who picked up third. Bartack (Acclamation (GB) - Bentley's Bush (IRE) by Barathea (IRE)) and Santo Prince did some running at the end to finish fourth and fifth.

The Privilege of Winning

All nine ran on the Cushion Track. Executiveprivilege (First Samurai - Refugee by Unaccounted For) opened at 2-5, and didn't budge much from those odds. Irish Presence (Midnight Lute - Proper Form by Deputy Minister) was 62-1. I liked the look of Awesome Annie (Awesome Gambler - Cars and Cigars by Mane Minister), and Beholder (Henny Hughes - Leslie's Lady by Tricky Creek) and Travesura (Limehouse - Tempestra by Tale of the Cat) were catching my eye. I thought Irish Presence might need a race. Executiveprivilege was restless in the gate, and broke a little slowly. Irish Presence was also near the back.  It's Aine (Swiss Yodeler - La Fresa by Cozzene) held the early lead, but she was soon joined by Renee's Queen (After Market - Mighty Renee by Maria's Mon), who came through on the inside. Awesome Annie was getting involved as well, and Beholder made up some ground. Beholder moved into second, with Renee's Queen still on top. But, Executiveprivilege was coming. She flew by the others with ease, pulling away for a 4 1/2 length win, as good as advertised. Renee's Queen was secure in second, with Travesura overtaking Beholder late for third. Irish Presence made up some spots late to finish 5th. Watch the Replay.

Savanna La Mar (Curlin - Soft Morning by Pivotal (GB)) makes her second start, after finishing 2nd at 7 furlongs on the All-Weather track at Kempton on June 20. Windsor Rose was purchased for $9,759 as a yearling, and is out of Rose of Battle, who was a winner at 2. Rose of Battle has produced Pendle Lady, who was a winner at 2. Rose of Battle is a half sister to 3 winners, including group II stakes-placed Orpen Grey.

Tough Lady (Iffraaj (GB) - Frivolous (IRE) by Green Desert) has run twice, finishing 4th at 6 furlongs over good to firm turf at Hamilton on June 7, and 9th at 5 furlongs over soft ground at York on June 15. Finishing fourth in her only start was Pira Palace (Acclamation (GB) - Takrice (GB) by Cadeaux Genereux (GB)), who ran 6 furlongs over the All-Weather course at Kempton on May 28. She is out of group III stakes-placed Takrice, who was a winner at 2. Takrice has produced 2 winners from 3 to run, one of which won at 2. Takrice is a half sister to three winners.

My Funny Valentine has produced 5 winners, including Murbeh, a full brother to Oriental Romance. Two of her offspring won at 2, including Murbeh. My Funny Valentine is a half sister to three winners.

Singapura (Street Cry (IRE) - Burmilla by Storm Cat) was 9th of 10 in her only race, a 6 furlong contest run over soft ground at Newmarket on June 8. She is the second foal out of grade II winner Burmilla, who earned $170,285. Burmilla is a half sister to one winner, and a full sister to 3 winners, including group III stakes-placed Tsumujikaze, and grade II winner Magicalmysterycat, who earned $363,172.

Her Royal Empress (Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) - Aurelia (GB) by Rainbow Quest) ran her only race on May 17, finishing 10th of 13 at 6 furlongs over good to firm ground at Newmarket.
