News and Notes

Get Me a Cocktail (Big Brown - Impressive Attire by Seeking the Gold) was scratched from the 7th at Arlington Park. The winner of that one was Chase the Weasel (Service Stripe - Brassy Mack by Dixie Brass), who came from off the pace. Pace factors Hello Kitty Lou (Keats - Princess Sara by Chief Honcho) and Sally Bemo (Bellamy Road - Fancy and Free by Future Storm) were second and third. Watch the Replay.

The Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) was won by 2-year-old colt Know More (Lion Heart - Seattle Qui by Seattle Slew), who was not only a maiden, but made his debut in the Best Pal. He looked pretty professional. Watch the Replay. Know More is trained by Doug O'Neill and owned by J. Paul Reddam, the same connections as 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another. Pontchatrain Gets the Memo

There were no scratches from the main field of 10. The Bob Baffert-trained Magic Vixen (Tapit - Honour Colony by Honour and Glory) took the early money, but Christmas Secret (Discreet Cat - Christmas Affair by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) was favored at post time. She looked the part. Wasted At Midnight (Midnight Lute - Wasted Wisdom by Gold Fever) was 7-1, and Moulin de Mougin (Curlin - Cambiocorsa by Avenue of Flags) was 14-1. I thought Wasted At Midnight looked best of those two, and that Moulin de Mougin might need a race. Majestic Minister (Majestic Warrior - Quick Commander by Deputy Commander) hopped at the start, and Wasted At Midnight got pinched back just after the start, and trailed early. Lady Katfish (Exchange Rate - Touchallthebases by Grand Slam) emerged with the lead, flanked by Secret Memo (Horse Greeley - Miss Carrera by Memo (CHI)). Moulin de Mougin was not far off the leaders, but was losing ground on the outside. Lady Katfish continued to lead, chased by Secret Memo. Pontchatrain (War Front - Dominica by Housebuster) began to gain. She and Secret Memo moved as a team, overtaking Lady Katfish near the wire. At the finish, it was Pontchatrain whose head was in front over Secret Memo. Lady Katfish held third, and Miss Derek (Brother Derek - Quick Text by Tiznow) took fourth, just holding off a flying Wasted At Midnight, who made up an amazing amount of ground late. She should get them next time. Moulin de Mougin weakened to 8th, but she should benefit from the race. Watch the Replay.

A Perfect Finish for Imperfect Ground

All 10 ran. Imperfect Ground (Dehere - Saving Ground by Spinning World) and One Angel (Bandini - Strawberry One by Truluck) battled for favoritism, with One Angel winning that one. Millionaire Monkey (The Green Monkey - Polka Dot Miss by Pentelicus) was 8-1. He made a favorable appearance on the track, and I was liking Quality Trait (Read the Footnotes - Desired Trait by E Dubai). Don Antonio (Mizzen Mast - Sophie's Salad by Rahy) and Altitude Drop (High Cotton - Unicorn Kid by Lemon Drop Kid) were a little wild. My Cousin Bobby (Indian Ocean - Princess Biagi by Quaker Ridge) and Imperfect Ground went for the early lead. Quality Trait was off just behind this pair, but he slipped through on the rail to set the pace. Millionaire Monkey had a good spot on the inside, about mid-pack. Imperfect Ground was tracking Quality Trait, and making up ground were One Angel and Advier (Afleet Alex - Dancing Meg by Sky Classic). Imperfect Ground eased by Quality Trait in the stretch. One Angel and Advier were both closing well, but Imperfect Ground held them off for the victory. One Angel outfought Advier for second, and Quality Trait tired to fourth. There was a gap back to the others, who were led by Millionaire Monkey in fifth, who just held off Special Warrior (Majestic Warrior - Special One by Point Given). Watch the Replay (select Sunday 5/Race 6 - choice of WMV or MP4 file).
