Some Kind of Luck

Miss Lucky Sevens (Big Brown - Fancy Clancy by Rahy) drew off in the stretch in the 9th race at Arlington Park, to finish 4 lengths in front of the field. However, she may have had an unfair advantage. Pacesetter Livin Peace (Songandaprayer - Cinnamon Girl by Meadowlake) hit the rail, and it came apart and whipped across the course. Several horses had to take evasive action, jumping or avoiding the rail. Luckily, no humans or animals were injured. The stewards studied the footage for some time before declaring "no contest." All bets were refunded. And as far as the horses are concerned, we just pretend it never happened. However, the bettors will remember this race that never happened. They know that Miss Lucky Sevens can run, and she will not be 11-1 next time out. Watch the Replay. Read more about this incident here.

Lovely Daughter (Big Brown - Bobbie Use by Not For Love) ran fairly evenly to finish 6th, and Another Flashback (Curlin - Flashy by Wild Again) was involved early before weakening and finishing 10th in the Barretts Debutante Stakes. The winner was Bares Tripper (Sky Mesa - Bare Dancer by Cherokee Run), who showed speed from the start, and drew off in the stretch to win by 6 1/4 lengths.

Archer Hill (Big Brown - La Femme Galante by Grand Slam) was wide in the Summer Stakes (gr. IIT) at Woodbine, and didn't have much punch late, finishing 7th. He may have been compromised by the yielding turf. The winner was I'm Boutoscore (Even the Score - Unaltered by Pulpit), who took the lead at the start and didn't let up. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Summer Stakes here.

Cristoforo Colombo (colt; Henrythenavigator - La Traviata by Johannesburg) was scratched from the Group I Goffs Vincent O'Brien Stakes at the Curragh. The winner was Dawn Approach (New Approach (IRE) - Hymn of the Dawn by Phone Trick), who is now a perfect 5 for 5. Read more about his win here.

A Poney Shall Lead

All seven ran on the Polytrack. One Foxy Grey (Big Brown - Irish Smoke by Smoke Glacken) was the even money favorite. Also taking money was fellow grey Angelinthevening (Tapit - Watching You by Coronado's Quest). They both looked good, but I was liking Painted Poney (Dixie Union - Bramasole by Thunder Gulch). Hearty Laugh (Distorted Humor - Justenuffheart by Broad Brush) was also interesting. One Foxy Grey paused a bit at the load. Painted Poney broke on top, but One Foxy Grey went by. Her reign in front was short-lived, as Goldstryke Glory (Second in Command - Glory Is Forever by Roar) came through on the inside to set the pace. One Foxy Grey assumed a stalking position. Just off of these was Painted Poney. She made her move in the stretch, getting by Goldstryke Glory for a 1 1/2 length win. One Foxy Grey had to settle for third, but it was a useful debut for her. Watch the Replay.

A Winning Symphony

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Chongo Verdi (The Green Monkey - Tiz Spanish by Tiznow) opened as the favorite, but Symphony Forty One (Majestic Warrior - Breath of Life by Tactical Advantage) was the choice at post time. Symphony Forty One is one nice looking beast. I was liking Silver Track (Silver Train - Chapala by Meadowlake) warming up. He broke on top, but Celtics Stride (Irish Road - Staisha by Helmsman) was right with him. Chongo Verdi was wrangled back to mid-pack. Silver Track continued to lead, with Celtics Stride in second, but Symphony Forty One was looming on the outside. He moved even on the turn, and then began to pull away. Silver Track was tough for awhile, but then Symphony Forty One shook free from him to win by 2 1/4 lengths. There was better than 5 lengths back to Celtics Stride in third, followed by Tiger Distinction (With Distinction - Wha'pa by Victory Gallop), High Red Star (High Cotton - Red Ruffle by Montreal Red), and Chongo Verdi. Symphony Forty One is the 9th winner for Majestic Warrior. It seemed like the strategy with Chongo Verdi was try to harness his speed so that he would finish better. I don't think that worked. Watch the Replay.
