News and Notes

I apologize for not previewing Prettiereverydave's race at Hoosier Park on Tueday, October 2. Somehow, that entry slipped through the cracks. But, I did watch the race, and I recap it below.

Beyond Thankful Winning

The going was heavy. Fortify (Danehill Dancer (IRE) - Shaanara (IRE) by Darshaan (GB)) was favored, Peggy's Leg (Henrythenavigator - Audit by Meadowlake) was 25-1. Bainne (Strategic Prince (GB) - Laemeen (IRE) by Danehill Dancer (IRE)) was withdrawn for refusing to load, the other 14 took part. The start was fair for most, although Risk Return (Zamindar - Sheer Spirit (IRE) by Caerleon) was slow to begin. Fortify, Truly Delightful (Kalanisi (IRE) - Almost Twilight by Silver Hawk), and Rose Ransom (Oasis Dream (GB) - Rapid Ransom by Red Ransom) were mixing it up early. Peggy's Leg had a decent spot early, just behind the leaders. Fortify, Truly Delightful, and Rose Ransom continued to battle up front. Making up ground in the middle of the course was Beyond Thankful (Whipper - Beyond Compare (IRE) by Galileo (IRE)). He rolled by the leading trio, and went on to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Fortify held second, with Frozen North (Verglas (IRE) - Lazaretta (IRE) by Dalakhani (IRE)) and Lady Giselle (Indian Haven (GB) - Makena (GER) by Acambaro (GER)) picking up third and fourth. Peggy's Leg weakened after her early chase, finishing 13th.

A Cloudy Victory

The track was muddy. Eight ran, including the entry of Shugie (Political Force - Wear Well by Elusive Quality) and Braseana (Silver Train - Sweet Politics by Political Folly). They were favored early, but Undo (Flatter - Detach by Unbridled) was the slight choice at post time. Prettiereverydave (Midnight Lute - Confidential by Smarten) was just a couple of ticks above her. She didn't seem crazy about getting her blinkers on. Shugie had some spring in her step, but may have just been trying to keep her feet out of the mud. Braseana looked good, and Prettiereverdave made a favorable impression. But, I was really liking Undo. Braseana was a little reluctant to load. Cloudy in Sandiego (War Pass - She Nuit All by Lost Soldier) broke on top. Rossweisse (Majestic Warrior - Til Forbid by Temperance Hill), Prettiereverydave, Sofia and Mia (Toccet - Always Love by Not For Love), and Braseana set after her. Several lost ground around the turn, but Prettiereverydave had a nice spot on the rail. Cloudy in Sandiego continued on top, with Rossweisse and Sofi and Mia pressing. Prettiereverydave made her move on the far turn. She took over second, and moved even with Cloudy in Sandiego, but the latter filly spurted away again. Coming on late was Undo, who wrestled second from Prettiereverydave. She couldn't catch Cloudy in Sandiego, however, who passed the line 1 3/4 lengths in front. Although Prettiereverydave had to settle for third, she was more than 8 lengths better the rest, who were led by Rossweisse. Cloudy in Sandiego is the 5th winner for first-year sire War Pass. She sold for $50,000 as a yearling, and for $95,000 at 2, and is out of the placed mare She Nuit All, who has now produced 5 winners from 5 to run, including grade III stakes-placed Diski Dance, who earned $195,485. She Nuit All is a half sister to 4 winners, including stakes winners Be Mine Tonight and Unbridled Behavior, grade II winner Belle Cherie, and grade I winner Octave, who earned $1,660,934.
