Reaching Out for the Win

The track was fast, and Sir Wonderland (Sunriver - Lake Champagne by Greenwood Lake) was scratched, leaving 7. Reaching Out (Big Brown - Touch too Much by Holy Bull) was the heavy favorite, and he looked amazing in the paddock. Knockher Off (Unbridled's Song - Silver Knockers by Silver Deputy) made a favorable impression, and Hooked Forever (Hook and Ladder - Stellar Maiden by Raffie's Majesty) warmed up well. Sunrise Lover (Here's Zealous - Banished Lover by Devil His Due) was loose in the paddock, did not look happy as they neared the gate, reared during the load, and threw his head at the start. Animal Wrights (Midas Eyes - Denville by Candy Stripes) was squeezed at the start. Burning Flame (Hook and Ladder - Re Re Be Be by Sheikh Albadou (GB)) flew out of the gate and had a quick open lead. Knockher Off, Fierce Face (Songandaprayer - Maddie's Chatter by Thunder Puddles), and Reaching Out set after him. Knockher Off and Reaching Out began to catch Burning Flame. Knockher Off took the lead, as Burning Flame began to tire. Reaching Out coming on as well, and eased on by Knockher Off. Fierce Face was moving well late, but couldn't threaten Reaching Out, who won by 1 1/2 lengths. Hooked Forever came on to grab third over Knockher Off. The rest were far back. Reaching Out is the 7th winner for Big Brown. Watch the Replay.

The Origin of Darwin

Street Prince (Street Sense - Meditations by Out of Place) was scratched, and the track was fast for those remaining. Darwin (Big Brown - Cool Ghoul by Silver Ghost) was favored, although not as heavily backed as Reaching Out in Race 1 at Belmont. I thought he looked good, but might be better going longer. Souper Funny (Distorted Humor - Zoftig by Cozzene) caught my eye. One Man One Vote (Pulpit - Referendum by Unbridled) was a mite skittish, and Casino Day (Flashy Bull - Shanade by Sentimental Slew) looked ready for action. One Man One Vote was a late scratch. I was liking Retreive (Put It Back - Pleasant Quality by Elusive Quality) a bit as they warmed up. Darwin went right to the front. Transparent (Bernardini - Habiboo by Unbridled's Song), Retreive, Pirate's Grip (Mr. Greeley - Renaissance Lady by A.P. Indy), and Souper Funny were in pursuit. It was Transparent who applied the most pressure. Darwin continued to show the way, however. Transparent couldn't keep up, and Retreive took up the chase. But, there was no catching Darwin, who led all the way, and won by 2 lengths. Retreive was solid in second, four lengths in front of a weakened Transparent. Darwin is the 8th winner for Big Brown. Simon Eyes Big Sam

Brazilian Gold (Siphon (BRZ) - Deealta by Twining) was scratched, leaving 11 on the Polytrack. Vespato (Medaglia d'Oro - September Dolly by A.P. Indy) was favored. Big Sam (Big Brown - Sashay Away by Farma Way) was 7-1, down from his morning line of 12-1. I thought that Royal Art (Afleet Alex - Prall Street by Cherokee Run) was kind of nice, and I was liking the other Afleet Alex, Tiu (Afleet Alex - Song of the Saints by Saint Ballado), as well. Big Sam was a little antsy early, but warmed up nicely. Brink of War (Defer - Sunday Sport by Honour and Glory) was on edge throughout the prelims, and acted up at the load. The start was good. Big Sam was in the early mix, and took a short lead. He was hounded by Simon Eyes (Street Hero - Eastside Ballad by Saint Ballado), and these 2 separated a bit from the others. Brink of War made the first move out of the pursuing pack, gaining on the leaders. Big Sam still had the lead as they entered the stretch, but not for long, as Simon Eyes eased on by. He went on to win by more than 4 lengths. Big Sam fought on, when he could have faded, and saved second over Brink of War by a neck. Brink of War was another neck in front of Tiu. Simon Eyes is the 6th winner for Street Hero. Watch the Replay.

An Express Victory

All 10 ran, including two entries. The track was fast. The entry of Razman (Roar of the Tiger - Chaposa by Wild Event) and Mr. Mostly (Cowtown Cat - Ms. Mostly by Copelan) was favored. Bold Perspective (Sky Mesa - Zain Lass by Swain (IRE)) also received plenty of attention from the bettors. Midnight Mazel (Midnight Lute - Dothetwist by Distorted Humor) was 6-1. He is nice looking, but I was a bit worried that he would have trouble breaking, as many of the Midnight Lutes do. I was liking Officer Parties (Officer - Lucky Striker by Van Nistelrooy). Mr. Mostly and Montezuma Express (Henny Hughes - Time Is Tight by Crafty Prospector) went for the lead. Several had early trouble, namely Razman, Ptarmigan Mountain (Graeme Hall - Miss Ptarmigan by Cutlass Fax), and Heart of Kela (Kela - Fun At Heart by Distorted Humor). Midnight Mazel was a little rank. Mr. Mostly and Montezuma Express continued to duel. Bold Perspective moved into contention, and Belvedere Road(Sharp Humor - Snow County Honey by Foolish Pleasure) was not far off. Montezuma Express shook free from Mr. Mostly, but had to hold off the oncoming Bold Perspective. He went on to win by 3/4 length. Coming on late was Midnight Mazel, who finished a promising third in his debut. Watch the Replay.
