Brown Almighty (colt; Big Brown - Gone Goodbye by Gone for Real) finished third, but was placed second in the Bourbon Stakes (gr. III) after the disqualification of 2nd-place finisher Really Sharp (Sharp Humor - Reigning Dynasty by Thunder Gulch). Favorite Balance the Books (Lemon Drop Kid - Kreisleriana by Seeking the Gold) was the winner, finishing a nose in front of the aforementioned Really Sharp. This was a very roughly run race, with several having issues, including Brown Almighty. However, he also smacked the winner pretty good as that horse was making his move. Strike the Note (More Than Ready - Musical High (IRE) by Mozart (IRE)) was probably affected the most by the traffic. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Bourbon here.

Checking In with Moulin de Mougin

The turf was firm. Citizenship (Proud Citizen - If Angels Sang by Seattle Slew) was favored by just a bit over Secret Motive (Macho Uno - Sweet Citrus by Lemon Drop Kid). Moulin de Mougin (Curlin - Cambiocorsa by Avenue of Flags) was 7-2, and Irish Presence (Midnight Lute - Proper Form by Deputy Minister) was 8-1. Both made favorable impressions. Light Shine (Tapit - Perpectual Light by Sunny's Halo) was a late scratch. Tiz Heat (Tizbud - Heatology by Unusual Heat) was restless in the gate. Lady Katfish (Exchange Rate - Touchallthebases by Grand Slam) broke on top, but Citizenship and Solar Eclipse (Malibu Moon - Ever Hopeful by With Approval) were also in the early mix. Moulin de Mougin was just off of these, and Irish Presence was off a little slowly. Citizenship went up to set the pace, as Irish Presence was making up some ground on the inside. Solar Eclipse was pressing Citizenship, but Moulin de Mougin was right there as well. As they crossed over the dirt, there were about 5 or 6 in a line. It was Moulin de Mougin who was moving best, and she wore them down for a length win. Citizenship held second over Solar Eclipse, followed closely by Secret Motive and Lady Katfish. Irish Presence finished 6th, but was just a couple of lengths from the winner. Moulin de Mougin is winner number 8 for Curlin. Watch the Replay.

Super Ninety Nine Shakin It Up

River Styx (Roman Ruler - Sambra by Storm Cat) was scratched, leaving 7 on the fast track. Quietasacat (Elusive Quality - Banner by A.P. Indy) was the heavy favorite. Shakin It Up (Midnight Lute - Silver Bullet Moon by Vindication) was 17-1. I was liking Money Cannon (First Samurai - Cunning Play by Defensive Play) at first glance, and Shakin It Up made a favorable impression. Super Ninety Nine (Pulpit - Exogenetic by Unbridled's Song) seemed to be having fun out there. The start was good. Shakin It Up was away well, although at the back. Favorite Quietasacat came out running, but Super Ninety Nine was right with him. These two proceeded to set the pace together. Shakin It Up began to make up ground on the outside. Quietasacat and Super Ninety Nine continued to duel into the stretch. Shakin It Up was really flying, as Super Ninety Nine pulled free from Quietasacat late. Shakin It Up never stopped running, and took second, but he couldn't catch stablemate Super Ninety Nine. Favorite Quietasacat had to settle for third, just holding off Wild Dude (Wildcat Heir - Courtly Choice by Doneraile Court). A sharp debut for Super Ninety Nine, but also a nice debut for Shakin It Up, who should be better next time. It was interesting that the two first-timers finished 1-2. Watch the Replay.

Winning on the Prairie

The turf was firm, and only the AEs were left out. Miss Lucky Sevens (Big Brown - Fancy Clancy by Rahy) was made the favorite off of her performance in the no-contest race. She was bouncing around in the paddock. I was liking Hitechnoweenie (Harlan's Holiday - Hi Tech Honeycomb by Meadow Monster). Miss Lucky Sevens was a little jumpy as they moved on to the turf course. There was a little bumping at the start. Ginny's Grey (Political Force - Minister's Baby by Deputy Minister) took the worst of it. Neith (Dynaformer - Squall City by Carson City) set the pace, with Eden Prairie (Mizzen Mast - Clerico by Elusive Quality) and Doctor Vickie Lynn (Elusive Quality - Pathway to Heaven by Giant's Causeway) chasing. Miss Lucky Sevens was making up some places, but she was compromised by her post, and was forced wide. Eden Prairie continued to pressure Neith, and she got by that rival in the stretch, pulling away for a 2 1/4 length win. Closing well was Miss Squeal (Smart Strike - Miss Kate by Storm Cat), who took second by a neck over Hitechnoweenie. Just a nose behind her was Smitten (Tapit - Hi Lili by Silver Deputy), who overcame a slow start for fourth. Miss Lucky Sevens seemed poised to make a move, but weakened and finished 11th. El Duro Takes the Storm

Sayler's Creek (Bernstein - Postulant by Pulpit) and Dominate (Any Given Saturday - Bright Image by Summer Squall) were scratched. The public had a little trouble deciding on the favorite. The early choice was Taken by the Storm (Stormy Atlantic - Paint Brush by Broad Brush), but El Duro (Tapit - Feline Story by Tale of the Cat) was favored at post time. He was looking good. Electromagnetic (Henrythenavigator - Wind in My Wings by Sligo Bay (IRE)) was 14-1. I was liking Channel Isle (English Channel - Dandanna (IRE) by Linamix (FR)). The start was good, and there was a bit of a scramble for the early lead. Credit Call (Medaglia d'Oro - Stars Indy Skies by A.P. Indy) emerged with it, pressed by Endurance (Indy Wind - Sisa by Unbridled's Song). They were followed closely by El Duro, Carni (Bernardini - Carnival Delight by Half a Year), and Electromagnetic. Making an early move on the outside was Taken by the Storm. As they moved into the turn, El Duro went up to join Credit Call and Endurance. Taken by the Storm was just behind this trio in fourth. He had to wait in traffic, but finally found a way out and hit the front. El Duro chased him home, but couldn't catch him. Channel Isle made a nice rail move to snag third, with O T B Bob (Full Mandate - Smoke Granted by Smoke Glacken) in fourth. Electromagnetic came to almost a complete stop after his early involvement, finishing 9th. The jockey of El Duro claimed foul on Taken by the Storm, and that horse was disqualified for interference. The results were reversed, with El Duro the official winner over Taken by the Storm. Watch the Replay.

Curlin N Twirlin (Curlin - Bluff for Bluff by Pine Bluff) faces fellow New York-breds in her debut, scheduled for 7 furlongs on the turf.
