Brown Laddie Eclipses Summah

No Crime (Elhayq (IRE) - Crime Spree by Lost Code) was scratched, allowing AE entrant Waveland Luke Joe (Thesaurus - Dinnerat Event by Wild Event) to run. The other AE, Kee Kee Lee (Leelanau - Kee Kee by In Excess (IRE)), was left on the sidelines. The track was good (sealed). Brown Laddie (Big Brown - Galway Lass by Victory Gallop) was favored. He looked good on the track, as did fellow debuter Beat the Storm (Heart of the Storm - Isola Rosa by Distorted Humor). Waveland Luke Joe looked like he'd rather be elsewhere. Space Me Out (Golden Missile - Sprig of Broom by Rahy) outbroke the field, but he was passed by Beat the Storm, Summah (Tenpins - Sweet Summer by Summer Squall), and Beaus Golden Music (Salute the Sarge - Beaus Music by Beau Genius). It was Summah, who took the lead. Brown Laddie started to enter the picture. Summah continued to lead, but Brown Laddie was gaining. In the stretch, it was left to those two. They finished right together, and the difference was just a bob of the head, which went the way of Summah. However, almost immediately there was an inquiry and a rider's objection. The replay showed bumping between the two opponents, and Summah was also bearing out. The steward ruled that Summah interferred with Brown Laddie, and reversed the finish order. Thus, Brown Laddie becomes the 12th winner for Big Brown. Watch the Replay.

The Heart Was Strongest

The turf was firm. Only the AEs were left out. Favoritism bounced between The Lady Says Yes (Scat Daddy - Gold Court by Strike the Gold) and Live Life Fast (Bernardini - The Real Melody by Unbridled's Song), with the latter filly getting that honor at post time. Curlin N Twirlin (Curlin - Bluff for Bluff by Pine Bluff) was 6-1. The Lady Says Yes looked good at first glance. Pie's First Lady (Chief Seattle - Pierian Spring by Signal Tap) flipped in the paddock, and was a late scratch. Love Life Fast made a favorable impression as they head to the track, and Curlin N Twirlin looked ready. Catching my eye was Heart of New York (Kitten's Joy - On Broadway by Rubiano), who is a big flashy gray. I was having trouble finding a longshot to like. The best that I could do was Adriatic Dream (Wild Desert - Dinah's Pearls by Dynaformer), who made a decent impression. The start was decent, but Heart of New York dropped out of it, and trailed. Platinum and Plush (King Cugat - Riotous Miss by Brief Ruckus) headed for the front, with Curlin N Twirlin right with her. Curlin N Twirlin backed off a bit, to let Platinum and Plush set the pace, and Sing to Me (Songandaprayer - Fly to Me by Belong to Me) moved into second. Curlin N Twirlin was not far off, at the rail in third. Sing to Me began to retreat after a half. Curlin N Twirlin and Life Life Fast began to move on the leader, and coming on from the back of the pack was Heart of New York. Live Live Fast took a brief lead, but she had no answer for Heart of New York, who flew by almost effortlessly. She went on to post a 4 1/4 length win. Life Life Fast was clear in second, and the next three spots were close, with The Lady Says Yes a head better than Adriatic Dream, who was a neck in front of As Well (Sun King - Honey Sorbet by Housebuster). Curlin N Twirlin finished 6th after her early involvement. Not a bad effort, but she seemed to lack that finishing punch. On the other hand, very impressive performance from winner Heart of New York. Watch the Replay.
