News and Notes

The Breeders' Cup Post Positions were drawn on Monday. George Vancouver (Henrythenavigator - Versailles Treaty by Danzig) drew post 3, and Brown Almighty (Big Brown - Gone Goodbye by Gone for Real) drew post 7 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. I). In the Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. I), both Infanta Branca (Henrythenavigator - Totemic by Vanlandingham) and Moulin de Mougin (Curlin - Cambiocorsa by Avenue of Flags) are both on the AE list, and will need a defection or two to get into the race. Moulin de Mougin has been entered in the 6.5 furlong Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes, which is Race 2 on Breeders' Cup Saturday.

Please note that since this is Breeders' Cup week, Maiden Watch updates will be somewhat irratic. For example, in this blog I am not listing works. Thank you for your patience.

Winning is So Liberating

Only AE entrant Hitechnoweenie (Harlan's Holiday - Hi Tech Honeycomb by Meadow Monster) was scratched. The track was fast. Sanaaya (Smart Strike - Spun Sugar by Awesome Again) was favored at 5-2. Liberated (Curlin - Lady Melesi by Colonial Affair), Smitten (Tapit - Hi Lili by Silver Deputy), and Miss Brown Sugar (Big Brown - Gata Bella by Storm Cat) were all around 4-1. All the other fillies were double digit odds. Shoe Queen (E Dubai - Ornate by Gilded Time) and Smitten bumped at the start, and debuting Fast Alexia (Afleet Alex - Grand Portege by Grand Slam) ironically was off slowly. There were several fillies vying for the early lead, including Miss Brown Sugar, Movin Empress (Broken Vow - Treedom by Forestry), Wine Glow (Tiznow - Cool Storm by Storm Cat), and Shoe Queen. Liberated was far back early. Miss Brown Sugar and Wine Glow continued on top, with Undo (Flatter - Detach by Unbridled) and Sanaaya getting closer. Beginning a big move on the outside was Liberated. Miss Brown Sugar still led as they entered the stretch, but fresh competition was coming. Liberated and Sanaaya moved by her as a team, and coming on the outside was Smitten. Liberated shook off the other two, and went on to score a a 1 1/2 length win. Sanaaya was clear in second, with Smitten more than 4 in front of fourth-place Undo. Miss Brown Sugar tired to 7th after her early action. Liberated is the 12th winner for Curlin. Watch the Replay.

Rosenwhitenblue made her move on outside, and went by the top pair. She soon left the others behind, going on to post a 8 1/2 length win. Ad Meliora (Straight Man - Huntingland by Dove Hunt) grabbed second late, after starting slowly, and Farah took third. Poker of Eight never really recovered from her slow start, finishing 7th.
