Mudflats for a Sloppy Day

The track was sloppy. Coldblack (Ready's Image - Golden Surprise by Hurontario) was scratched, as well as Street Prince (Street Sense - Meditations by Out of Place), entrymate to Prince Curlin (Curlin - No Small Wonder by Capote). Mudflats (Tapit - Sunny Morning by Tale of the Cat), who had been gelded since his last start, was favored. Prince Curlin was 15-1. Malachite (Notional - Jena's Gold by Seeking the Gold) made a good impression, and Souper Funny (Distorted Humor - Zoftig by Cozzene) caught my eye. Prince Curlin was a wee bit skittish as they headed to the track, but he looked more focused during the warmup. The start was decent, but Prince Curlin was a little slow to get going, and plunged to the back of the pack. Kid Lightning (Lemon Drop Kid - Heat Lightning by Summer Squall) went to the front, chased by Souper Funny and Mudflats. Mudflats soon set after Kid Lightning, and Malachite began to make up some ground. As they entered the stretch, Mudflats was in control. He went on to post a 3 1/4 length win. Malachite took second easily, and Elnaawi (Street Sense - Pilfer by Deputy Minister) finished well to grab third over a weakened Kid Lightning, who had to settle for fourth. Prince Curlin was never able to get out of last, but he did catch up to the rest of the pack by the wire. Getting off the rail would be helpful for his next try. Watch the Replay.

One Awesome Mama

Twelve ran on the Polytrack. Ready Express (More Than Ready - Boston Express by Boston Harbor) took the early money, but debuting Awesome Mama (Awesome Again - Mama Nadine by A.P. Indy) was the choice at post time. Rowdy Friends (Henrythenavigator - King Shooting Star by Storm Cat) was almost 48-1. Ju Ju Judy (Istan - Judiths Rumour by Hennessy) was rambunctious in the paddock. I was liking Arushingchill (Pass Rush - Azichill by Plenty Chilly), but it was hard to find fault with the favorite. Uptown Gal (Don't Get Mad - Great Goin Rose by Albert the Great) was bumped and squeezed at the start. Rowdy Friends and Thirty Eight Plus (Catienus - Busty Miss by Deputy Commander) were away slowly. To the lead went Ready Express and Arushingchill. Awesome Maria was watching this duel back in third. Awesome Mama began closing the gap as they moved into the turn. She rolled by the top pair, and they offered little resistance. Awesome Maria went on to post an easy 4 1/2 length win. Soft Wind (Flatter - Miss Jeanne Cat by Tabasco Cat) did some running late to take second, with Juanita Senorita (Corinthian - Gran Senorita by El Gran Senor) wrestling third from a tired Ready Express. Rowdy Friends passed a few tired ones to finish 7th. Watch the Replay.

Dancing to the Win

Reina Diamante (Pulpit - Bridge Game by Giant's Causeway) was the heavy favorite. Ethela (Henrythenavigator - Ethel Anna by Storm Cat) was 21-1, but she looked good. Favorite Reina Diamante went right to the lead, but she had plenty of company, as Bluegrass d'Lite (Bluegrass Cat - Unbridled Action by Unbridled's Song), Dancing Years (El Prado (IRE) - Mista Mayberry by Touch Gold), Ellie's the Boss (Street Boss - Swither by Anees), Sunandsea (Henny Hughes - Cayman Sunset by Wolf Power (SAF)), and Princess Dubai (E Dubai - Legion of Merit by Danzig) were all in the mix. Ethela was near the back in the early stages. Bluegrass d'Lite moved even with Reina Diamante, and even put her head in front, but she couldn't keep it up, and began to retreat. Dancing Years took up the challenge, and she went head and head with Reina Diamante, as Princess Dubai took over third. At the wire, it was the grey head of Dancing Years in front, with favorite Reina Diamante settling for second. Princess Dubai was a length behind these in third, with St. Louie Slew (Flower Alley - My Sweet Sug by Slew City Slew) and Ellie's the Boss finishing a neck apart in 4th and 5th. Ethela did a little running after her slow start, finishing 7th. Watch the Replay.
