The Long Win

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. The entry of Long River (A. P. Indy - Round Pond by Awesome Again) and Incognito (A.P. Indy - Octave by Unbridled's Song) was heavily favored. Prince Curlin (Curlin - No Small Wonder by Capote) was 40-1. Long River looked good in the prelims, and I was also liking Bellamy Beach (Bellamy Road - Beach Bunny by Storm Bird). Long River broke on top, but let Deterrent (First Defence - Red Soul by Storm Bird) go by to set the early pace. Prince Curlin was in fourth early, but soon retreated to the back. Mr Palmer (Pulpit - In Truth by Quiet American) had to steady around a retreating Prince Curlin. Deterrent continued to lead, chased by Bellamy Beach and Long River. Sampson County (Majestic Warrior - Publicity Shy by Bertando) joined the fun as they moved into the turn. Long River went by on the inside and hit the front. The only threat was Mr Palmer, who took over second and set after the favorite. Long River continued to hold off that rival, however, crossing the line 3/4 length in front. It was 9 lengths back to third-place Bellamy Beach, followed by Sampson County, Incognito, Prince Curlin, and Deterrent. Having won at a mile and 70 yards, and being a son of A.P. Indy out of Round Pound, expect Long River to show up on some Derby lists. Watch the Replay.

Running Red River

Only the AEs were left out, and the track was fast. Red River Blue (Bluegrass Cat - Confiding Winner by Confide) was favored, and Kiss My Monkey (The Green Monkey - Smoochem by Friendly Lover) was 25-1. I was liking Drama Coach (Montbrook - Nancy's Glitter by Glitterman) and Sweetwhiskeybrown (Capitalimprovement - La Vita's Infinity by Timeless Native). Kiss My Monkey made a decent appearance, but acted up a bit just before the load. He was in the mix early along with Hoke's Run (Littleexpectations - Tense Exchange by Red Ransom), and Concho (Indian Ocean - Shimmering Jul by Omega Code). Alta's Hippie Dude (Honor Glide - Shimmy Shake by Suave Prospect) was off slowly. Red River Blue was soon after the leaders. Kiss My Monkey began losing ground as they entered the turn. He went all the way to the back of the pack, finishing last. Up front, it was left to Hoke's Run and Red River Blue. Hoke's Run held off Red River Blue for a time, but the favorite wore him down late for a 1/2 length win. Behind Hoke's Run came I'm in Bloom (Primary Suspect - Black Tie Gala by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) in third, and Sweetwhiskeybrown in fourth. Watch the Replay.
