News and Notes

I hope everyone had a good holiday. I have returned after a week's absence, slowly acclimating again. I will use this post to update results from that period, as well as previewing a race for Sunday. I'll try to do a Year End post on Sunday or Monday.

December 20

The Best Monkey (The Green Monkey - Dandy Dulce by Dixieland Heat) finished 4th, and Electromagnetic (gelding; Henrythenavigator - Wind in My Wings by Sligo Bay (IRE)) finished 7th in Race 9 at Gulfstream Park, a mile Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $35,000) on the firm turf. Boy of Summer (Exclusive Quality - Melancholy Baby by Maudlin) won by a neck. Watch the Replay.

December 21

Chongo Verdi (gelding; The Green Monkey - Tiz Spanish by Tiznow) won Race 2 at Gulfstream Park, a 6 furlong Starter Optional Claiming Race, by 13 3/4 lengths. Watch the Replay. Chong Verdi now has 2 wins, 1 second, 3 thirds, and earnings of $42,730 in 8 starts. He was claimed out of the race, and will now be trained by Michael Maker for Ken and Sarah Ramsey.

Federal Agent (colt; Curlin - Gwenjinsky by Seattle Dancer) finished 2nd in Race 6 at Gulfstream Park, a Maiden Special Weight at 1 1/8 miles on the firm turf. He was gaining at the finish, but just couldn't catch favorite Prado Cat (Kitten's Joy - Vineyard Vines by Rahy), who led all the way. Watch the Replay.

Neat Package (filly; Big Brown - Miss Loren (ARG) by Numerous) was second in Race 6 at Tampa Bay Downs, a Maiden Special Weight at about 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf. Time Is Forever (The Cliff's Edge - Tabadabado by Gilded Time) was up late for the win. Watch the Replay.

Your Lovely (filly; The Green Monkey - I'm Angela by Kayrawan) was involved early, but faded to finish 8th in Race 5 at Gulstream Park, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $12,500). Distinctlybella (With Distinction - Awanda by Awad) set the pace, and won the race. Watch the Replay.

Irish Lute (filly; Midnight Lute - Shaniowa by Storm Boot) closed to finish second in the Letellier Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds behind Finding More (Trickey Trevor - Greenmountain Girl by Green Dancer). Watch the Replay. Stakes-placed Irish Lute now has one win and 2 seconds in three starts, with earnings of $44,060.

Ground Transport (colt; Big Brown - Extry by Broad Brush) set the pace in his debut in Race 11 at Fair Grounds, a 6 furlong Maiden Special Weight, but couldn't hold off Departing (War Front - Leave by Pulpit), finishing second. Watch the Replay.

Grade III stakes-placed Mylute (colt; Midnight Lute - Stage Stop by Valid Expectations) was a 10 3/4 length winner in Race 7 at Fair Grounds, a mile and 70 yard Allowance Optional Claiming Race. Watch the Replay. He now has 2 wins, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds in 7 starts, with earnings of $213,695.

Winner's Legacy (filly; Midnight Lute - Very Very by Royal Academy) finished 2nd in her debut in Race 3 at Gulfstream Park, a mile and a sixteenth Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $75,000) on the firm turf. Preponderate (colt; Big Brown - Santaria by Star de Naskra) was 5th in Race 1 at Tampa Bay Downs, a mile and 40 yard Maiden Special Weight on the good track. Midnite Poppa (Unbridled's Song - Island Sand by Tabasco Cat) was favored, and won by 1 1/4 lengths. Watch the Replay.

On the Fence (gelding; Henrythenavigator - Seaquoia Blue by Forestry) finished 9th in his debut in Race 6 at Santa Anita, a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight on the fast dirt. Favorite Belvin (Empire Maker -Midway Squall by Storm Bird) was the winner. Watch the Replay.

Current Event (filly; Curlin - Grand Merger by A.P. Indy) finished 3rd in Race 4 at Aqueduct, a mile and 70 yard Maiden Special Weight on a sloppy track. Frosty Bay (Frost Giant - Baymont by Wild Again) was the winner. Watch the Replay. Freshman sire Frost Giant, sire of Frosty Bay, now has 12 winners out of 15 runners.

Rowdy Friends (filly; Henrythenavigator - King Shooting Star by Storm Cat) was third in Race 8 at Turfway Park, a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $30,000). Majestique (Majestic Warrior - Quiet Word by Quiet American) won the race by 5 lengths. His sire, Majestic Warrior, now has 29 winners in his first crop. Watch the Replay.

Inmyfathersimage (colt; Curlin - Friendly Michelle by Artax) was third in his debut in Race 2 at Aqueduct, a mile Maiden Special Weight on a good track. Favorite Revolutionary (War Pass - Runup the Colors by A.P. Indy) was an impressive 8 1/2-length winner. Watch the Replay. Revolutionary is the 10th winner for War Pass.

Classy and Serene (filly; The Green Monkey - Time for Jackie by Unbridled Time) finished 3rd in Race 1 at Gulfstream Park, a mile Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $12,500), but was placed second upon the disqualification of the 2nd-place finisher. Brenda's Bar (gelding; Midnight Lute - Les Cocos by Honour and Glory), who has yet to win a race, was 4th in the 6.5 furlong Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes at Turf Paradise at odds of 70-1. Glenco Kid (Repent - Wavering Girl by Wavering Monarch) closed well late for the win. Watch the Replay.

Midnight Music (colt; Midnight Lute - Forest Whispers by Forestry) was 6th in his debut in Race 2 at Gulfstream Park, a 5.5 furlong Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $50,000), after breaking inward at the start. Favorite Pepe (Harlan's Holiday - City Fire by Carson City) was the one length winner. Watch the Replay.

Curlamorous (filly; Curlin - Glamorous Lady by Kingdom of Spain) didn't seem to handle the sloppy track in Race 5 at Laurel, a mile Allowance/Optional Claiming Race, and was eased late, finishing 6th. They were off the turf today at Fair Grounds, so I'm not sure the surface will hold. World Class has been working at Fair Grounds, including 5 furlongs in 1:02.40 on December 21. She is the first foal out of grade II stakes-placed Highest Class, who won 2 races at 2, and earned $120,996 overall. Highest Class is a half sister to 8 winners, including stakes winner Approval Rating, and grade III turf winner Gulch Approval, who earned $593,004. Boss Barney's Babe (Street Boss - Jezebella by Wild Again) is a veteran of 4 starts, finishing 3rd at 6 furlongs at Hoosier Park on September 19, 5th at 7 furlongs at Keeneland on October 17, 4th at 6.5 furlongs at Churchill Downs on November 15, and 2nd at 6 furlongs at Fair Grounds on December 6. This will be her first turf start. Boss Barney's Babe was a $25,000 yearling, and is out of the winning mare Jezebella.
