As we reach the end of 2012, I present a review of our chosen stallions. The stallions are listed in alphabetical order. I have included some of their most accomplished/promising runners, as well as some of my favorites. Please feel free to comment on your favorites. Remember that a favorite is not necessarily the best horse, just one that you like for whatever reason. Note that stats for foreign runners are almost certainly incomplete.
In preparation for 2013, you can begin suggesting stallions to follow next year. Any first-year stallion is eligible for inclusion in the poll, although I would encourage readers to concentrate on North American-based stallions, as they are easier for me to follow more completely. To find stallions whose first crop race in 2013, go to the Stallion Register Online, and under "Stallion Search" enter "2010" in Year Entered Stud. I will collect the suggestions for the next couple weeks, and we will vote on them before the end of the month.
I will continue to preview races featuring our 2012 horses into early 2013, although I may restrict the number of previews presented.
33 runners, 88 total starts, 17 wins, 12 seconds, 6 thirds, and earnings of $710,132. 16 individual winners.
Stakes winner Brown Almighty (colt; Big Brown - Gone Goodbye by Gone for Real) won the Sunny's Halo Stakes on August 4. He also finished 2nd in the Sunday Silence Stakes on September 8, and the Bourbon Stakes (gr. IIIT) on October 7. Brown Almighty ran in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT), and had a short lead after 6 furlongs, but faded to 9th after being crowded. He has been working at Oaklawn.
Darwin (colt; Big Brown - Cool Ghoul by Silver Ghost) was an impressive debut winner on October 6, and then finished 4th as the favorite in the Nashua Stakes (gr. II) on November 4 behind Violence.
Miss Lucky Sevens (filly; Big Brown - Fancy Clancy by Rahy) broke her maiden on November 10 at a mile on the turf at Churchill Downs, and then finished 2nd in a mile and a sixteenth Allowance/Optional Claiming Race on the turf at Gulfstream Park on December 16, behind highly-regarded Caroline Thomas (Giant's Causeway - Bit of Whimsy by Distorted Humor). Miss Lucky Sevens is also known for finishing first at Arlington Park on September 15 in a race that was declared a non-contest.
Brown Eyes Blue (filly; Big Brown - Golden Lips by Silver Ghost) was the first North American winner for Big Brown, going gate-to-wire on June 30 at Churchill Downs. She finished 6th in the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) at Saratoga on July 20, but returned on November 24 to finish 3rd in an Allowance/Optional Claiming Race at Churchill Downs. She is in training at Gulfstream Park.
Also maiden winners Absolute Beauty (filly; Big Brown - Absolute Magic by Unbridled), Get Busy Livin (colt; Big Brown - Look Out Lorie by Orientate), Reaching Out (colt; Big Brown - Touch too Much by Holy Bull), etc.
Miss Lucky Sevens, hard to resist a horse that had to break her maiden twice. But also Big Sam (Big Brown - Sashay Away by Farma Way), because my nephew's name is Sam, and Having Abig Middle (filly; Big Brown - Lady On Holiday by Harlan's Holiday), who has a fun name, and seems on the verge of figuring things out.
47 runners, 111 total starts, 17 wins, 24 seconds, 15 thirds, and earnings of $650,647. 15 individual winners.
Grade II stakes-placed Liberated (filly; Curlin - Lady Melesi by Colonial Affair). She broke her maiden at a mile at Churchill Downs on October 28, and then finished 3rd in the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) at that track on November 24.
Stakes-placed Savanna La Mar (filly; Curlin - Soft Morning by Pivotal (GB)), who finished 2nd in the Weatherbys VAT Services Star Stakes at Sandown Park on July 26.
Moulin de Mougin (filly; Curlin - Cambiocorsa by Avenue of Flags), who broke her maiden in her second start, on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita on October 7, and then finished 5th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes on that surface on November 3.
Curlamorous (filly; Curlin - Glamorous Lady by Kingdom of Spain), who has a record of 2 wins and 2 seconds in 5 starts, with earnings of $47,000.
Palace Malice (colt; Curlin - Palace Rumor by Royal Anthem), who broke his maiden impressively on August 4 at Saratoga, but was sidelined with sore shins. He is back in training at Palm Meadows.
Also maiden winners Countess Curlin (filly; Curlin - Profit Column by Private Account), Evolutionary (filly; Curlin - Gilded Wings by Gilded Time), Jay Eye See (colt; Curlin - England's Rose by Nureyev), Watrugonnadorosie (filly; Curlin - Tears I Cry by Chester House), etc.
Curlamorous, you can question her class, but not her heart. I'm hopeful that her most recent 6th-place finish was on account of the sloppy track. Also Inmyfathersimage (colt; Curlin - Friendly Michelle by Artax), who made up tons of ground to finish 3rd in his debut on December 28, and Curly Top (colt; Curlin - Top Notch Lady by Sultry Song), who has finished 2nd twice, but really it's on account of his name.
49 runners, 134 total starts, 20 wins, 16 seconds, 11 thirds, and earnings of $1,247,327. 16 individual winners. Henrythenavigator leads first-crop sires by money earned.
Grade I winner George Vancouver (colt; Henrythenavigator - Versailles Treaty by Danzig), winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. I) on November 3, who also finished 3rd in the Darley Prix Morny (Fr-I) on August 19, and the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-I) on October 13. He has earned $700,282.
Group I winner Pedro the Great (colt; Henrythenavigator - Glatisant (GB) by Rainbow Quest), who won the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Ire-I) on August 12.
Group II stakes-placed Cristoforo Colombo (colt; Henrythenavigator - La Traviata by Johannesburg), second in the Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises Railway Stakes (Ire-II) on June 30, and third in the Coventry Stakes (Eng-II) on June 19.
Group III stakes-placed Afonso de Sousa (colt; Henrythenavigator - Mien by Nureyev), third in the Pinsent Masons LLP Acomb Stakes (Eng-III) on August 22.
Stakes-placed Amerigo Vespucci (colt; Henrythenavigator - Senza Paura by Fly Till Dawn), second in the James F. Lewis III Stakes on November 10, and in the Marylander Stakes on December 1.
Stakes-placed Infanta Branca (filly; Henrythenavigator - Totemic by Vanlandingham), who finished 3rd in the Emirates Equestrian Federation E.B.F. Marble Hill Stakes on May 26. She finished 10th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. I) on November 2.
Has to be Amerigo Vespucci. First North American winner for Henrythenavigator, breaks his maiden on Columbus Day. Doesn't get any better than that. Would love to see a match up with him and Cristoforo Colombo.
41 runners, 101 total starts, 14 wins, 17 seconds, 13 thirds, and earnings of $696,116. 11 individual winners.
Stakes winner Midnight Ballet (filly; Midnight Lute - Buzz Song by Unbridled's Song), who won the Sharp Cat Stakes on November 11, and then finished 5th in the Hollywood Starlet Stakes (gr. I) on December 8.
Grade III stakes-placed Mylute (colt; Midnight Lute - Stage Stop by Valid Expectations), who was third in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) on November 17, and second in the Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes on July 21, and the Jean Lafitte Stakes on October 20. His most impressive race, however, was his most recent, when he won an Allowance/Optional Claiming Race at Fair Grounds on December 26 by better than 10 lengths.
Grade III stakes-placed Shakin It Up (colt; Midnight Lute - Silver Bullet Moon by Vindication), who was third in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes on November 22.
Stakes-placed Hold Our Destiny (filly; Midnight Lute - Perfect Charm by Charismatic), who finished third in the Selima Stakes on October 27. Overall, she has run 6 times, with 2 wins, 1 second, 1 third, and earnings of $53,295.
Stakes-placed Prohibiting (gelding; Midnight Lute - Blazing Cat by Tabasco Cat), who was third in the New Westminster Stakes on July 14.
Shakin It Up is my Derby horse, so he has to be a favorite. I am fond of most all Midnight Lutes whose name does not contain Midnight, including Mezzanotte (filly; Midnight Lute - Bellastrega by Deputy Minister) and Where's Dominic (colt; Midnight Lute - Woodflower by Woodman).
The Green Monkey
14 runners, 56 total starts, 8 wins, 11 seconds, 9 thirds, and earnings of $208,256. 5 individual winners.
Although a lot of people scoffed at the inclusion of The Green Monkey, his percentages stack up quite well with other freshman sires, especially considering the quality of his mares. From just 25 registered 2-year-olds of 2012, 10 have placed.
Green Money (filly; The Green Monkey - Take Into Account by Top Account), who runs in the grade I Clasico Ano Nuevo Stakes at Camarero in Puerto Rico on New Year's Day, has won 3 races, with earnings of $16,796.
Chongo Verdi (gelding; The Green Monkey - Tiz Spanish by Tiznow), who has 2 wins, 1 second, 3 thirds, and earnings of $42,730 in 8 starts, including a 13 3/4 length win in a Starter Optional Claiming Race on December 21.
Kinz Funky Monkey (filly; The Green Monkey - Pretty Ready by More Than Ready), who broke her maiden on September 1 at Del Mar. She previously finished 2nd to future stakes winner Midnight Ballet.
As a long time supporter of the underdog,The Green Monkeys are natural favorites. If forced to choose, I'd go with The Pink Monkey (filly; The Green Monkey - Senorina Valentina by Flying Victor), who has placed in her last three starts, Chongo Verdi, who almost won first time out, but finished second, and then was disqualified, and Kiss My Monkey (colt; The Green Monkey - Smoochem by Friendly Lover), cause it's fun to say.

Not unexpectedly, this one was taken off of the turf, and run at 5.5 furlongs on the fast main track. First-timer Annie Bellum (Wildcat Heir - Dare I Dream by Delaware Township) was favored. Annie Bellum looked good on the track before the race. Boss Barney's Babe (Street Boss - Jezebella by Wild Again) broke on top, but was soon passed by Crazy Lucky. Chasing Crazy Lucky were Annie Bellum, Natty Boh (Bluegrass Cat - Eventually by Affirmed), and Foxy Syd (Successful Appeal - Clearly Foxy by Volponi).
