News and Notes

Verrazano (More Than Ready - Enchanted Rock) had folks talking Derby after his 7 3/4 length debut win in Race 2 at Gulfstream Park on January 1, 2013, a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight. Watch the Replay. He was purchased for $250,000 as a yearling, and is a half brother to grade II winner El Padrino, who ran in the 2012 Kentucky Derby (gr. I).

Keep those suggestions coming for 2013 stallions. I'll probably post the poll next week.

Thanks for your positive feedback on the blog. I appreciate every one of my readers, makes all the work worth it.

December 31 Results

A Valid Game Effort

All eleven ran, and the track was fast. The entry of Game Effort (Midnight Lute - Glory Lane by Unbridled's Song) and Fully Engaged (Dynaformer - Richetta by Polish Numbers) was favored, with Valid (Medaglia d'Oro - Grand Prayer by Grand Slam) also gettng plenty of play. Valid broke on top, with Cool Metallic (Medicean (GB) - Polite Reply (IRE) by Be My Guest), but Sam's Sonic (Love of Money - Lucky Bridle by Unbridled Jet) and Coldblack (Ready's Image - Golden Surprise by Hurontario) went by to set the early pace. Valid was just off of these two. Sam's Sonic and Coldblack continued 1-2 for a time, but then Cool Metallic came up and took second. Valid was still right there. Coming on to the scene was Game Effort. Game Effort couldn't through on the rail, and was moved out. Valid hit the front, but Sam's Sonic kept up for awhile. Valid pulled away from him, however, coming home, 3 3/4 lengths in front. Game Effort kept going, and caught Sam's Sonic for second, but didn't threaten Valid. Watch the Replay.

Only AE entrant Gray Not Bay (Rubiyat - Paying Penance by Cat's Career) and Main Track Only entrant Revelationist (Corinthian - Sky Beam by Kingmambo) were left out, and the turf was firm. New Line (First Defence - Introducing by Deputy Minister) was favored, and Big Sam (Big Brown - Sashay Away by Farma Way) was 10-1. He made a favorable pre-race impression. Dominate (Any Given Saturday - Bright Image by Summer Squall) hopped at the start, the others were away well. Ramsey Branch (Cowtown Cat - Sanibel Sole by Miswaki) came out first, but Play It Loud (Unbridled's Song - Bsharpsonata by Pulpit) went by him. Also involved early was Bad Hombre (Sky Mesa - A Little Evil by Deputy Minister). Ramsey Branch took advantage of his inside post to go back in front, but Play It Loud was still there. Big Sam was near the back on the rail. Play It Loud began to advance on Ramsey Branch. He took the lead as the went into the turn, and then drew off in the stretch. He went on to win by 4 lengths.
