On the Fence with Myperfectvalentine and Sylvia T

News and Notes

There was an impressive amount of rain in Hot Springs, which caused several washouts on the track at Oaklawn. Racing was canceled for Saturday and Sunday, including Late Night Lu (Midnight Lute - Luhoo by Luhuk)'s race on Saturday, and Jias Curls (Curlin - Spectacular Day by Carson City) and Ethela (Henrythenavigator - Ethel Anna by Storm Cat), who were scheduled to run on Sunday.

The 2013 Stallion Poll remains open.

Branding a Winner

All seven ran on the fast track. Tizmetizyou (Tiz Wonderful - Pelt by Canadian Frontier) was favored, Mezzanotte (Midnight Lute - Bellastrega by Deputy Minister) was 8-1. The start was good. Rhinestone Diva (El Corredor - Country Diva by Songandaprayer) sped to the lead, with Tizmetizyou taking after her. This pair was soon several lengths clear of the others, who were in a fairly tight bunch. As they went into the turn, Tizmetizyou moved by Rhinestone Diva, but the duo was still well clear of the rest. Branding (Street Sense - Awesome by Storm Cat) came out of the pack, and set after the leaders. She got by Tizmetizyou on the inside, to get the victory by 2 1/2 lengths. Iconic Spirit (Bernstein - Super Freaky by Smart Strike) came on to grab third, with Rhinestone Diva tiring to fourth, followed by Now Hope (Tiznow - Shared Hope by Gone West), Mezzanotte, and Corlett Drive (Pleasant Tap - Azure Spring by Open Forum). Branding was ridden by Gary Stevens, the first win of his 2013 comeback. Watch the Replay. Read more about the race here.

Prayers Answered

The track was fast, Brenda's Gold (Scat Daddy - Obviously by Touch Gold) and Love My Life (Latent Heat - Tico Breeze by Carson City) were scratched. Anahauc (Henny Hughes - Foxcaller by Beau Genius) was favored at 4-5, Midnight Rider (Midnight Lute - Ma Kitty by Meadowlake) was 10-1. The break was good. Midnight Rider had good starting speed, but So Do Prayers (Brother Derek - Wishes Come True by Honour and Glory) got to the lead from her inside post. Midnight Rider, Tread (Arch - Scoot Yer Boots by Seeking the Gold), and Pretty Petal (Northern Afleet - Kirsche by Defrere) were in pursuit. Midnight Rider applied pressure on pacesetter So Do Prayers into the stretch, but then began to retreat. Tread was still right with the leader, and even put her head in front. But, So Do Prayers fought back. These two finished together, with So Do Prayers getting her nose down for the victory. It was 2 lengths back to Pretty Petal in third, followed by favorite Anahauc. Midnight Rider faded to 6th after her early foot. She should be stronger next time. Watch the Replay.
